The mines were closed because of the weather, the town deserted by any person who could find their way out of the snow. No money meant no shelter, however, and Eaze found himself shivering beneath a small bridge with Crack and Momo next to a fire that was not going to keep anything warm except the snow that kept trying to put it out. He couldn’t hear his own coughs over the roar of the wind, sensation long gone from his skin despite the worn jacket wrapped around him. The other two seemed as though the life had gone out of their bodies, statues that leaned against each other with gazes locked on the fire in front of them as it gradually faded to an icy mound of blackened wood.
Tiki had left two weeks ago for his mystery job, and he had yet to return. Eaze closed his eyes with a fit of hacking, entire body wracked with the effort of his lungs. He’d get sicker like this, and they wouldn’t be able to move on… He didn’t want that to happen at all. They just had to stay here for a few days until the weather cleared, and they could move on to a town with a place where the men could work and get enough money for food.
His scarf was stiff with sleet, he noticed as he moved to stand. Moving around would help him stay awake, and keep him from freezing to death. A few steps across the underbelly of the bridge, a few steps back. The pacing continued until he felt a tingling in his feet once more, a bit of relief reaching him at the small sensation. At least he didn’t have frostbite yet. A large gust of wind blew a sheet of snow into his face, forcing him to step back and cover his eyes with an arm to avoid getting anything in them.
When he looked into the dim grey beneath the bridge again, there was a spot of warm color at the center of his vision. The snow shifted the right direction in that moment, showing a pair of tiny gold shoes a few feet away. Eaze’s eyes traveled upward slowly, finding a black skirt, a thick sweater, and a pair of eyes above a scarf. It looked like a little girl, but there was no way one of those would be out here at this time of night.
“Eaze?” She snapped his name over the sound of the wind, sounding almost... irritated, though he couldn’t quite tell. He simply nodded mutely as she dug a bag out of her skirts, tossing it at him with mittened hands. Eaze caught it clumsily, staring dumbly at her as she put her hands on her hips.
“That’s enough for you and those two to get a room in an inn until the end of the month.” Eaze’s gaze was as disbelieving as could be, simply watching her for several moments before moving to open the tiny bag and peer inside. It took a while, his numb fingers fumbling around the straps, but there it was- a lump of francs that would easily cover room and board for that amount of time. His expression was bewildered as he looked back up at the girl, trying to figure out exactly what she was about. “You never saw me, got it?”
He nodded enthusiastically, clutching the bag tightly with his stiff hands. The girl turned on heel with a flip of her scarf, walking off into the grey without a second glance. Her gold shoes were warm spots in the cold field of his vision, until they disappeared with a flash of violet light that seemed to swallow the snow swirling in the air she had passed through. Eaze blinked at the purple in his vision, shuffling to Crack and Momo carefully as he tried to clear the lightblindness. A small hand reached out to shake the pair, waking them to show them what he had been given. They shifted carefully, ice-encrusted eyelids parting to look at the boy as he held out the bag.
If only Tiki had been there to see it, Eaze thought, but the smile on their faces distracted him for the time being. Tiki always came back, after all.
Perhaps he’d even return in time for Christmas.
