Who: Ethan and Ariana
Where: Olivander’s wand shop
When: Backdated to August 25
What: Spending some time cleaning
Rating: G
Ari swallowed as she stepped up to the store. It was a warm afternoon and she’s decided that a tanktop and shorts were probably the best idea to work in if she was actually going to help him clean up the shop. She was proud of herself and her boldness for offering. Maybe it was time that she tried to get more involved with people and especially people she wanted to know better.
Taking a deep breath and pushing her blonde braid over her shoulder, Ari stepped into the store and looked towards the counter, hoping to find Ethan and not his uncle first.
--
Ethan was wiping off some shelves when Ariana came in, his focus directed on doing his best to get all of the dust from wherever it came from off of the wand boxes and the wooden shelf itself. He was often a perfectionist when it came to the shop, so this was a normal thing for him. He saw no need to apply himself less to the boring cleaning and polishing of the surfaces in the store- it was important to keep the place welcoming after all.
When he heard the small bell that signaled someone entering he headed to the front, offering a smile at Ariana. “Welcome. It’s good to see you again.”
--
Smiling, Ari walked over with a wave. He looked just as handsome as he always did at school and she fought the urge to blush and stumble over her words. She was getting better at it though.
"Morning Ethan. Looks like you already started without me. I hope I'm not too late to help." She offered shyly. "Just point me where you want and I'll start." Hopefully it was close to him so they could at least chat a little bit.
--
Ethan smiled at her and motioned to the broom. “As I’m dusting you can follow up and sweep so that everything is cleaned up at one time. That way I can get the higher up shelves and not have to worry about what’s on the floor as much.” It was logical enough since he was taller than she was that she stayed on the lower areas and kept him to the upper areas.
--
“Sure, that sounds like a good idea.” And it kept her from climbing up a ladder. Ari had always been taught to avoid putting herself in a position that a seizure could be deadly even if she could almost always tell when there’s one coming. Catching sight of the broom, she want to grab it. “So do you clean often?” With how nice the store looked, Ariana assumed that he must.
--
Ethan nodded. "I get to do all the cleaning, and most of the time I have to answer quizzes while I'm working. My uncle is taking a few days off though so it's just me and no twenty questions." Not that he minded much, it kept his knowledge fresh, but the vacation seemed to apply to him too.
--
“Well at least the quizzing must help you keep your mind off of the cleaning and pass the time along. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep us both as equally distracted.” She teased as she began to sweep things into a nice pile first. “So are you ready for school to start?” It was drawing closer and Ari found herself more excited with each day. Sure, she loved summer, but she missed magic desperately.
--
"It does. Keeps me fresh on details too." Which was important in his line of work. He needed to be able to remember wood and core properties and what would not work together in order to make functional and appropriate wands for future generations.
--
Ari smiled as she nodded. “Sounds like once you’re out of school, you’ll be more than ready to make all sorts of wands. how long does it take for you to carve one?” Carefully, she began dust, making sure not to miss a spot. For a moment, her mind drifted to the idea of being married in the far off future and helping in her husband’s shop. Thank Merlin that Ethan wasn’t a mind reader.
--
Ethan shrugged slightly. "It depends. The carving sort of takes a life of it's own most of the time and so it could take a day, a week, months." The wand told him when it was done and he just went by feel on that. When it felt right was when he was done with it.
--
"Months? How long did it take you to carve mine?” She loved just how intricate the flower blooms were on her’s. She always assumed that it had taken forever. More than once, she’d run her finger over the blooms and leaves gently. She was so excited to go back to school just so she could try it out.
--
"Yours took about two months. I usually don't do more than an hour or so a day and the detailing on yours was pretty intense." He smiled at her and ran a hand through his hair before turning back to dusting. "Honestly, I'm a perfectionist so I am sure some other craftsman would have gone faster with it."
--
Well I’m glad that it was you and not some other craftsman that made my wand. It makes it more special.” Far more special than anything else she owned in her life. “I’m excited for school to start because of it. What about you? Ready to be back in classes?” She paused and glanced up to him. “Or would you rather just be here?
---
Ethan smiled at her and shrugged. "I'm glad you think that. It's just what I love though." Because wand making had been his goal in life for most of his life and he doubted that would ever change. "I want to finish up school. There is still a lot I have to learn there too before I can be the best craftsman out there.
---
She loved his dedication to his craft. It was something that they rarely saw in people their age. Even she wasn’t as devoted to what she wanted for the future as he was. Of course, she still wasn't sure if she wanted to be a healer, or if she simply felt that it made the most sense to help others who were as ill as she was. “I think you’ll be the best soon enough. Plus it’s nice to have you at school with me.” She said, blushing and looking down at her sweeping as she did.
--
Ethan smiled at Ariana, the hint flying directly over his head. "I like being at school with you all too. I complain but I would never leave before I was qualified." Because the knowledge he got at school would be a big help in running and tending the shop.
--
Ari fought the disappointed feeling that bubbled up when he mentioned that he liked being at school with everyone rather than her specifically. Was it a way to let her down easily? She doubted it since Ethan didn’t seem to say it any certain way to suggest it. “Me either. But I like school.” She felt privileged to be able to go. Her father had been worried that her disability would hinder her chances at it. “I’ll be grateful when I won’t have to take divinations anymore.”
---
Ethan laughed and shook his head. "I don't have much skill for that. I never ended up taking it." A smile remained on his face as he continued to clean up the shelves. "I like school too though. I just like it out here a bit more I suppose. Close to family."
---
“Neither do I, but I had thought it might be fun... not so much when you don't have the second sight. “ She made a face and shrugged. She was absolutely hopeless when it came to the subject. Honestly, she’d wished they had a healing class. that was something she was interested in after all. “I don't blame you. Your uncle seems really nice.” He’d been quite kind and rather amused when she picked the wand that was now in her possession.
---
"I don't know why they would offer it to those without Sight. It seems illogical and counterproductive." Because it was almost impossible to be useful in the class unless you had a natural skill. "And my uncle is amazing. I'm very lucky to have him and mum in my life." Because it took the place of his father, who had not been a good man at all in his mind.
---
“I guess there’s always the chance that people don't know they have the sight?” It was quite possible after all. She’d heard of people not getting that gift until they were older. And part of her had thought it would be an interesting gift to have. Maybe she’d be able to foretell her attacks. But it was not the case. “He was quite friendly and kind. Though he did tell me that my wand was free since it had been made by an apprentice.” Which was only an excuse to help the girl save face. No one liked to admit that they needed help with money after all.
--
"I guess, but I think there are ways to see. Like, signs that someone will be good at it. I mean, certain wands will only bond with someone with Sight, and cores the same." Which was a useful fact to know and that was something. "Yes. Until I'm fully trained my wands come free of cost since I'm not as good as my uncle." Acknowledging her statement as factual even if it was not the only fact.
---
“Really? I never knew that. I guess certain cores would be more well suited for certain spells. That’s kind of interesting. So can you tell the type of wizard a person is by their wand?” She wondered vaguely. “Then I’m lucky that your wand picked me then, and that you’re so good at what you made already.’ She slid her wand out and smiled. Despite not being able to use it, she hasnt let it leave her sight since she got it.
--
"To some degree. Certain woods and cores will never bond with a dark wizard. Some bond with fighters, some with artists. You can learn a lot by studying wandlore." A small smile. He loved talking about things like that, though he knew that sometimes people got bored listening to it. It was just what he loved though.
--
“Yeah? Well then what does my wand say about me since you were the one who made it?” She asked, honestly a bit curious what her wand could say. Would he approve of it too? It was hard to tell what he thought of her. He was friendly, but he was friendly with everyone.
--
"Pear and unicorn hair. Means you're warm hearted and generous, and well respected as well." A small smile and shrug. "When I mention wands that won't bond with a dark wizard, yours would be one that I'd never imagine would be found in the hands of one who had chosen the dark."
--
Ari liked what the wand said and she wondered if it was true. She liked to think that she tried to be generous. She wanted to make people happy just as much as people made her. “Well then I hope that it will always stay in the light with me.’ She said shyly, grateful once more that this wand had been the one to pick her. “We should probably finish up. Don't want to end up talking more than cleaning.” She teased lightly.
