Merlin’s beard this day had been the worst they’d had in a very long time. From the threatening start to the reveal of the evening, it was a nightmare. Their parents had finally made their choice, but hadn't even told them before it was announced. He was going to be marrying Lily Snow of all people and his sister, his poor Lia...
Moving towards the bed, he reached out to hug her close to him, trying to sooth and comfort her as much as possible. He knew that this would be harder for her. She was far more sensitive than he, or at least he felt that she was. “It’ll be ok... we can still figure out a way around this.” He cooed softly, running a hand through her ginger hair and then kissing her forehead. “How are you feeling?”
Ophelia was somehow both numb and angry from this evening. She hadn't wanted to go, had a bad feeling, and the had lived up to what she had feared. Orestes and Lily. For some reason that fact was bothering her more than what had happened to her. Nico seemed like he at least would understand, would not take her from her brother. Lily though? She didn't expect that kindness to be found there.
When he said they'd find a way around it, and then asked how she felt, she lifted her eyes to meet his. "She'll take you from me and I can't stand that." She legitimately thought that losing her brother would kill her in the end.
Res blinked in surprise at that comment. Honestly, she expected her to be concerned about Nico and having to handle him while at school or their future. Instead she was worried for him, that he would be taken from her. Res immediately shook his head and reached out to pull her into his lap, wrapping his arms tightly around her.
“Lia, there’s no way that I’m going to let anyone take me away from you, especially not Lily Snow.” Most Slytherins were even wary of that girl. She was dangerous and ruthless, and Res could understand his sisters fear honestly. “Just like Nico won’t take you from me either.” He said with a gentle smile and a soft kiss her cheek.
Since she tended to link her future with his, being without him meant that she didn't consider herself to have one if he wasn't there. She curled into his grasp and rested against him, her eyes closing for a moment.
A small smile curved her lips at his words though and she nodded. "We can't stay. I won't." Her eyes opened and moved to meet his, just as he brushed his lips on hers. Her fingers moved to stroke his cheek lightly and she smiled again. "We can go together. We have money saved away..."
Feeling her in his arms, Res felt safe for a small time. Nothing could pull them apart right now. They had their love for one another. But that wouldn’t last forever. No, tonight proved that. Sooner or later they either had to flee, or they had to accept their fate.
It seemed his sister realized this as well and her option was the former rather than the later. She wanted to escape this place while they could. And res was of a like mind. “We can’t leave right away. You know that’s what they’ll be waiting for.” He knew it better than most. Their parents were like that. He was sure they’d have some way ready to stop the two before it went that far.
Ophelia knew they had to plan and she would start that now. Selling her paintings to augment the small savings they had seemed like a start and she nuzzled closer to him as she thought.
"I can take commissions. For money." Because along with selling her work that was already done, she could use that to increase their income. "We can sell potions too." Both of them were skilled at making potions and some things would bring in a good amount she knew.
Res hated that she’d have to sell some of her art, but it also made the most sense. After a moment, he gave a nod. “That’s probably our best course of action. I can sell potions while at school, that’s the least I can do while you sell art.” But would it be enough. “We should make a plan to leave for the end of school. disappear the moment we get off the train and run. It’s probably our best chance.” So long as their parents didn't try for an early wedding.
“Maybe we can convince Nico to help out. He didn't seem all that excited for the situation either.” None of them did but Lily. Ash looked like he was disappointed that it was not someone else, Bella had run and Nico didn’t look happy in general.
Ophelia nodded slightly. "We have some money. We can add to that and then just apparate from the station. Keep looking in the paper and maybe put a payment on a cottage or something while we are in school so we have a place to go." She buried her face in his neck and sighed. There was no way she could deal with the marriage as it was. They both needed to get away.
"We can ask him." Ophelia nodded. He had been kind enough and she accepted that. He didn't want it any more than she had though. Not in the least. "I don't want to be without you though."
That was a good idea to start looking for a proper place once they started school. They’d have to buy it sight unseen, but no matter how bad or good it looked, they could always just fix it up and make it theirs. “That’s a good idea. We’ll start to figure things out together, bring anything and everything we can to school with us because we wont be coming back here.”
her mention of being without him immediately made Res hug her tighter and smile a little. “You’re not going to be Lia. They’d have to kill me before they could drag me from you.” And that was true. He’d sooner die than leave his sister’s side.
"We should start now since we aren't bringing our full trunks back home for the holiday." She looked thoughtfully around the room and smiled. "I looked through some books and I think I've figured out an extension charm. Next time they're out we can steal some of the books from downstairs and the stuff in here, we can fit between ours."
A smile as he hugged her tighter and she nuzzled against him, letting out a contented sigh. "It'll be just us like it should be." Because it had always felt that way to her anyway.
“True, but maybe not tonight. I wouldn't be surprised if they were waiting for us to do something.” Because their parents weren’t stupid, just terrible people. He would’ve preferred them stupid to be honest. Then they might have loved them rather than hated their very existence.
“Yes. We’ll find some place away from them and all the negativity. Maybe a nice one bedroom that we can put some strong protective wards up.” He ran his hand up and down her back in a soothing motion.
"We can toss our school things in. That way we don't have to worry about them. The rest, we can do when they're at the World Cup. I don't think we are going?" They'd be at home while their parents and maybe their older brother went. That would be fine with her honestly. She wasn't huge on the sport at all.
"Someplace big we can hide in. A city." Because there would be no sense in going someplace entirely magical where they'd be found. Someplace with a small magical underground would suit them both. "As long as I'm with you it doesn't matter what's around."
“School is a good idea. Tomorrow?” Because honestly he had no desire to move from the position they were in. “Doing the rest during the quidditch cup is a good idea. I have little desire to go either. All you do is watch people tossing balls after all.” Res was never a quidditch fan. He’d much rather read than get on a broom.
“Maybe somewhere on the West Coast, or perhaps europe. they might not look for us there.” That’s also assuming that they’ll care long enough once the engagements fall through. “And same here... welllll except for books. I still love them more than you.” He joked, moving to tickle her side lightly.
"Tomorrow." She nodded. She didn't really want to move either. Being against him was comfortable and comforting after the day they'd had. She needed this, needed the small bit of sanity that he would offer to her now that they were alone together.
"I'd like France. Can we go to France?" Because she knew some of the language and she loved the stories of the place. Plus them being as they were, they would fit in well and no one would know who they were. They could hide and be whatever they wanted. When he said he loved books more than her and then began tickling her she wiggled for a second and shook her head. "No you don't." And she wiggled slightly again, moving and catching his lips with hers.
Res made a point of looking as if he was considering France for a moment before finally nodding. “I guess we can go to France first. Maybe london for a bit too?” Because he’d like to go there, see some of the museums and libraries. He heard Britain's ministry was far better than America’s as well so there was always a chance at working there too.
But before he could mention that idea, his sister’s lips were on his and his eyes were wide. Sure he’d kissed a girl or two before, both times thanks to some silly little game in the Slytherin Common room. This thought sent his blood boiling when compared to them. When they broke apart, his eyes were still opened wide with surprise and confusion as he watched his sister. “Lia?”
"France and England then, yes." Ophelia smiled brightly and hugged him. She was so glad he agreed with her idea, though it was one place that made sense. Far from any of this and suited well for artists like her.
A flush tinted her cheeks when she pulled back from the kiss, her eyes fixed on his. She wasn't sure what his tone was now and it confused her. Usually she could tell just what he was thinking and feeling by looking at him, knowing him as she did. Now though, she was uncertain what to do and she didn't know how to respond.
He returned the hug, agreeing with the idea. Europe held much more promise for them after all and they would simply need to figure out how to make it plausible. It shouldn't be that hard to do between the two of them. They could earn money and he could immediately look for work out there while Lia painted.
Lia’s kiss distracted him from everything though. He hadn't ever thought to kiss his sister before, not like that at least. But now what was he supposed to do. He liked it and there was a part that immediately craved more. But then there was that logical part of his mind that agreed that this was a truly terrible idea. “I....I’m not sure what to do.” He finally admitted after a few minutes.
Ophelia knew that she would be able to get more paintings done during the school year. He could help her finish her schoolwork so she could focus on art. That would be the best path in her mind and they would be able to bring in some money for when they left. If she got her name out now she could sell for more when they went away.
A tiny frown when he said he didn't know what to do and she shrugged one shoulder. "I liked it." Her voice was soft and unsure, because if he hadn't liked it it was senseless to try again. She wanted to though.
Res hated to be the cause of her sister’s frowning, but he wasn't exactly sure what to do. This was wrong, wasn't it? Families shouldn’t kiss like that, or want to kiss like that, but he did. He wanted to feel his lips on Lia’s again and pull her closer her.
Her words froze him once more as she admitted that she liked it. What did it mean then? Should they do it again? Was it alright if they both wanted it? “I did too...”
Ophelia touched his cheek softly as he responded to her again, her eyes meeting his. "I'm yours Res." Because she had always belonged to him. It had been that way since they'd been born. Even before honestly. She loved him in a way that she could never care for anyone else.
"I love you, Orestes. I've always loved you. There's no way it's wrong." But the fact that they were going to be sold off had made it more urgent that she told him. That they knew what was going on in the head of the other.
Despite being confused, Orestes immediately leaned his cheek into her touch and seemed to relax a little more. Her words though surprised him. She did belong to him and he to her, but he’d never thought of it in the romantic sense before. Was it ok? Did it matter? Despite them making these plans, Orestes wasn’t even sure they’d be able to escape their family. Maybe he should just take what little he could for now and let it be a treasured memory for him when the future came.
“I love you too. You know that will always be true... but are you sure Lia?” he asked, his hand reaching up to cup her cheek this time.
The fact was she didn't care anymore about right and wrong. If it was wrong to be with someone she'd been entirely isolated with for years then she didn't care about what was right. Her eyes remained fixed on his and she sighed softly, fingers running through his long hair.
"I'm sure. I'm yours. They left us together. It's all we've got. Always has been." She nuzzled her nose against his and smiled softly. "Why shouldn't we be this way?"
Lia knew exactly what to do in order to calm Res into relaxation. The panic from before started to fade thanks to her hands running through his hair and he started to think about it. Was it really all that wrong? It wasn't as if neither would want it.
“I guess you’re right... can... can I think on it Lia? I just want to make sure this is the right thing for us.” He asked as he pulled her close again, nuzzling her.
Ophelia snuggled into him and nodded. "Any time you need, Res. I'm not going anywhere." It was true. She could not imagine life without him in any way, shape, or form. He was as much a part of her as her hands or her wand.
Her fingers continued to stroke through his hair and she smiled slightly. "Just rest. We can figure this all out later. I'm here."
Res nodded slowly as he relented to her touch, his mind on the kiss and what his sister was offering. He did love her, but did he love her like that? Could he? The thought was what filled his mind, plauging it until slumber welcomed him that night.
