Molly was not being avoidant. She simply didn't have time to focus on anything but quidditch. There was no reason to avoid the people around her. If she was running from classes it was only so that she could keep herself fit- it was cold outside and so running inside was better.
Right now she was in the common room- trying to finish up her homework during dinner time so she could hide in her room later in the evening. Except she totally wasn't hiding. There was no reason to want to be away from people at all.
Gabe hadn't been avoiding Molly since they came back to school, at least not consciously. He might've noted that they weren't hanging out as much, but given how seriously he'd fucked things up with his inadvertent confession, it was understandable. They had to let things cool off. And it wasn't that they weren't still spending time together. There had been a lot of practice time given the upcoming game.
Gabe wasn't completely focused on what was going on with him and Molly. Death had not let up as usual and had continued the 'previews' for the coming year in the weeks since New Year's Day. The raven was a permanent fixture now, and whenever he entered a room, he looked around to locate where it was.
Molly sighed and scribbled out a few lines before tapping her page with her wand, clearing the page. Again. She wasn't doing very well on focusing and it was stupid muggle studies. She didn't know why she was still in the class even, she had no need for it, but even since Harry left she had stayed for some reason.
She lifted her eyes from the page to see black eyes fixed on- maybe near(?) her. Gabe. A flicker of a wave and she tapped her quill on the table, not really sure what to do now.
The raven was sitting on the back of the sofa next to Molly. She waved at him - maybe? He nodded greeting back. The bird stretched its wings. Gabe ran his hand through his hair before walking over towards it - to Molly. "Hey," he said in casual greeting.
“Hey.” She offered a small smile, vaguely uncertain still. It was amusing to think that she was so easily able to attract guys to her, but the ones she wanted- truly wanted- were the ones that she had difficulty with. She couldn't just dance and draw Gabe to her any more than she had been able to do so with Harry. It made her wonder what she was supposed to do- the men that were drawn to her never seemed the sort as much to be the people she wanted.
"Coming to dinner?" It didn't look like it. She was pretty obviously working on assignments. Gabe felt like an idiot. He could flirt with anyone, and found partners to mess around with easily enough. And the one girl he'd slipped and used the l-word on he just sounded like an idiot.
“Nah. I might grab something later, I guess.” Molly couldn't cook to save her life. She would have to bother the elves or something like that if she wanted to eat. Or eat burned food. Whichever. Her eyes flicked to his face, her teeth worrying her bottom lip. “You ready for the game this weekend?” She had been going a little less hard on him, so while she knew he was good, she knew too that she was risking the game because of her stupid actions.
"As much as I can be." He'd been running drills on his own outside of classes and practice. He liked seeing the sky, and it made him less nervous to see Ravens and Crows hanging around when he was outside. It was slightly unnerving to see them sitting on furniture, although he was mostly used to it. "I've been running a lot of drills." Occasionally the drill involved flying around ravens or crows and other times he tried to catch them, but he didn't need to share those details.
Molly nodded slightly, her eyes averted as per normal. There was no reason to give anything away at this point. “Good. I'm pretty sure even with the team getting shaken up a bit that we are going to win.” Even with the fact that she had to train two new chasers in the past weeks, she was sure they'd be fine.
"We've had good depth on the team the last couple years," Gabe agreed. Between reserve players, and others who tried out but didn't suit up, they'd had people to pick from. The raven hopped to a new position on the couch, and Gabe's eyes moved to follow it before returning to Molly. Not that she'd really looked at him much. He probably could've kept watching the raven without her noticing.
Molly typically avoided gazes and so it was nothing new that she was not meeting his eyes- or it would have been if it wasn’t Gabe. Gabe got that contact in a way that most people didn’t. She brushed her hair back from her face absently, finally looking at him when he glanced away for a moment, and then keeping her eyes on him. “We’re going to win, I know it. I have a really good feeling.”
Gabe smiled a little and shrugged. "My visions aren't useful for those sorts of predictions." And he was trying not to think too much about why the visions seemed more ever-present this year. Was it that he was officially an adult now in both worlds? Or was it a response to the political events?
Molly shrugged. “We’re a good team. It’s not a vision so much as I know you guys have the skill. We’re hungry for it now.” Because they had lost the last game and she was very much hungry for a win. She wanted the teams out there to see her winning, so they would want her more. This was one of her last chances to make an impression, and she needed it.
Gabe wasn't going to argue. Molly was confident and that was good. Gabe as seeker knew that he had to focus on the snitch, and that was the best thing he could do to help the team. "And we have a good captain… who's passionate and confident in us."
“It's not so much on me. I just have to protect you guys.” Molly shrugged one shoulder and pushed her hair back again, shifting in her seat. “Join me?” Because they couldn't continue being awkward like this.
Gabe sat, since she'd offered. "I'm the seeker. It's my job to handle myself. You look after the chasers - and the other team. But Battye wasn't your fault. He was showing off for the scouts." Gabe added, knowing that Molly did take some of the blame.
“And I should have been watching more closely. I knew he was trying to impress the scouts.” She shrugged and closed her eyes for a moment before looking back at him. “It won't happen again. I'm going to make sure that no one gets hurt this time around.”
"You couldn't have protected him. He was pulling dangerous moves, and it caught up with him. Fuck, I probably will too. If I get hurt it is my fault, not yours. Seekers are a team unto themselves on a Quidditch team. We play our own game in between yours."
“And you're still on my watch.” Her voice was firm as she looked at him. “You're not getting hurt. We’re going to win and you're going to be getting that snitch for us.”
Gabe was in a darker mood than usual - the regularity of his visions reminding him of how close Death was at all time. He knew better than to tell Molly that though when she was already worried about a repeat of the career ending injury that Battye suffered in their last game - and Brinley on the opposing side. "I'll do my best, captain."
Molly’s hand lifted almost unconsciously, moving to touch him before dropping a few inches before it settled on skin. “You're the best in the school. I doubt anyone could beat you on a good day. Or even a moderately bad one.” She offered a small smile, twisting her hands together slightly to hold them in place.
"You are my captain. You are biased." He was good - and used his height as an advantage against his smaller competitors. Small was often favored in the seeker position, so he used reach. But he was definitely not the best there was. And this week he wasn't sure if the ravens and crows would help or hinder him.
“And right. We've got this.” Molly glanced down at her hands absently. They had to win after the last game. Half her team had been hurt in one way or another. Playing Gryffindor was always tough. “How have you been doing otherwise? Class going well?”
"Getting used to new teachers midyear is new," Gabe shrugged. Other than that, things were fine. "You must be having a tough time if you're doing homework now." Unless she'd been trying to avoid him. That hadn't worked out for her if she had been.
“I should try to pass my NEWTs. None of the scouts has contacted me for a tryout so I need to come up with some plan.” So she had been trying to work harder on top of practice and all. She didn't want to end up just working in a shop after school, so she had to succeed on some level.
"It's still pretty early in the scouting process," Gabe pointed out. "But no matter what, passing NEWTs is important." Unless like him you were an heir who had a job no matter what thescores. He still wanted to do well even so.
“It's January.” Molly shrugged. That meant she had until June, and probably not even that, to get someone’s attention on her. It didn't matter how early it seemed, she needed to be sure to be stunning.
"Well, I'll do my best to make you look good then," Gabe assured her. He wanted to see her get what she wanted and deserved out of life. He didn't doubt that Adrian would put in a good word for her too with the people who'd been scouting him.
“I know.” Her eyes met his and she offered a more open smile. He was the one person on the team that she wasn't even a little bit worried about. The rest she had some concerns, but he would show how good she was by being as good as he was.
