“A magical glare...” She mused mostly to herself. “Not their kind of magic. I can’t rudely take people from their lives and drop them in a dustbowl carnival.” She sighed, sort of wishing that she could. Maybe then she would have been able to take matters into her own hands. Sitting around simply shooting dirty looks at the Management trailer made her feel a little helpless and she wasn’t entirely comfortable with that feeling. Danny had always said that the number one rule of magic was to always be the smartest person in the room. Henley felt like the carnival’s owners had her beat, in that aspect.
“You’re probably right. The only thing worse than this would be getting kicked out to fend for myself. Do they kick people out?” She suddenly looked just a little worried, but tried to mask it with a half-smile. Henley didn’t want to imagine the world outside of the carnival. Dusty and harsh, she imagined. Much harsher than this place where she got a place to live and food to eat.
“So I am.” She replied to his statement. A little smirk formed on her lips. “Is it so obvious?” Henley had never stopped to consider the difference between city behavior and country behavior, but she’d been in urban settings all her life, even when she traveled for work. It made sense that she would seem like a typical city girl.
