Too wrapped up in her own predicament, she was caught off-guard when someone spoke to her. Her shoulders gave a tiny jump of surprise and she felt her heartbeat pick up its pace slightly. Henley’s expression softened, but just a little bit, as she turned to face the stranger.
“Well, I’m not giving up.” She sighed, folding her arms. “If they can bring people here then they can send people back.” She made no attempt to hide how unhappy she was with her current situation. It seemed like he’d already witnessed her unhappiness firsthand, so there was little point in backtracking and putting on a happy face. Of course, she imagined she’d have to do just that for her new job. Smile cheerfully and do everything the illusionist asked of her. It reminded her too much of her situation with Danny Atlas when she’d been his assistant. That hadn’t ended well at all.
“Sorry,” She apologized in a low voice. “No point in being pissed off around you.” At least she didn’t think there was. Art and Carl were the ones with connections to Management, not this guy. Not as far as she knew.
“I’m Henley. The latest illusionist’s assistant.” She added the second part with a bit of a grumble, but gave a small polite smile to the man nonetheless.
