| Tiberius offered Charmaine one of the remaining sweets bought off the tea trolley. The plan was to take one for himself shortly after. With the prefect meeting finished and the prefects gone to their friends, Tiberius remained in the compartment with Charmaine; both had agreed to stay behind and discuss their plans for the upcoming year. Although he would've felt more comfortable working with the other three prefects up for the position of Head Girl, and he knew them better, it wasn't surprising that Charmaine had received the honours. The two of them had classes together, and they had been prefects for two years, but he had barely spoke with her previously. But he felt rather optimistic about the coming school year after meeting the prefects for the first time. Of course, they didn't instill the uttermost highest confidence, but they seemed like a good bunch. So he had to resist the urge to just lean against one of the walls and put his feet up on the seat. He would have to change into his uniform later. For the time being, he was just leaning forward slightly to hold the sweet out for Charmaine and giving her a friendly smile. While some girls fantasized about being married to the most eligible bachelor and doodled their first names with surnames such as Black, Malfoy, or Lestrange, Charmaine spent the last two years writing Charmaine Travers, Head Girl. Celebrations had gone on back at home, but now that she was aboard the Hogwarts Express, fun and games were over. Charmaine took responsibility seriously which she conveyed to the group of prefects she had met with. She didn’t dislike any of the prefects and she was also quite happy to see that Vesper had received the position of prefect. As for the Head Boy, Charmaine had expected Patil to step up to the position, although she had been hoping for Ignatius. When she saw the Head Boy badge on Tiberius Ogden, she was relieved that he was at least a Ravenclaw. Charmaine thanked him for offering her the sweet, but politely, if not curtly, refused. Her posture was perfect, not a hair out of place, her uniform pressed and impeccable. It was clear that Miss Travers was strictly business. The first day was not the time to be soft. “Would you say that you have a specific leadership style?” she started. Tiberius leaned back in his seat and helped himself to a sweet. With it pushed to one cheek, he paused for a slight moment and resisted the urge to raise an eyebrow at Charmaine. This was to be expected, given what he knew of her, but with that question, he felt like he was being interviewed for a position he already had. He wasn’t going to rest on his laurels, and he was going to take his position seriously as well, but this was just weird. “I haven’t given it much thought,” he admitted, sounding quite formal as well, though he did look a bit comfortable. He had tests to study for, and immediately after receiving congratulations and getting taken out to dinner, Tiberius had gone on to reading ahead for this coming year. His primary goal was to just provide leadership and have Hogwarts be better than its current state, at the end of the school year. “I believe in leading by example.” He looked at Charmaine with slight uncertainty, unsure of whether she wanted him to ask about her leadership style. A part of him suspected she would provide it anyway. “Hm,” she said in replace of a statement. So he would be the less strict one, Charmaine quickly analyzed. While she didn’t have any plans to be a dictator, at the same time, establishing presence from day one was crucial and if that meant she needed to be enforcing things more and others would perhaps even dislike her more, then so be it. Her seventh year would not have been complete without the Head Girl position, and she too wanted to leave Hogwarts a better place after graduating. Charmaine had spent the past two years observing the other Head Girls and how she would do things differently if she were in their shoes. Now she was finally given that opportunity and there was no way that she would let Ogden ruin anything. Not that he seemed to be the type to be absolutely carefree, but truth be told, she didn’t know much about him other than that he had decent, okay, very good marks. Hm? Honestly? As important as the first day was, and as much as he wanted to make a good impression on the professors, the prefects, the students, and now Charmaine Travers, it was becoming rather obvious to Tiberius that he did not want to be stuck in a compartment with her for longer than it was necessary. Especially when Professor Slughorn was likely having his meeting and he had friends scattered around the train. Tiberius had to duck his head so that he could discreetly make a pained face as he just swallowed the sweet before looking back up at the Head Girl. “All right,” he said, his voice remaining formal despite his words. “I can show you my schedule so that you know where you can find me. I am usually at the library, the Ravenclaw common room, or an empty classroom.” There was the slightest pause as Tiberius realised what spending time in an empty classroom meant to many students, but he used those to do practical magic in study groups. Still, he went on ahead. “We can hold a prefect meeting this month; I have tea. Prefect rounds are covered. Congratulations again, Miss Travers. Anything else?” Charmaine wished she would have paid a bit more attention to Ogden in her former years, but then decided he didn’t seem too complicated of a boy anyway. “I will make a copy of my schedule for you as well, I’m sure within a week or two we will be able to coordinate our times better. I am also usually at the library or the common room.” Charmaine mentally imagined the library and couldn’t remember him ever really there. Then again, she usually found a spot toward the back of the library to distance herself from unnecessary loud whispers of the younger years. She wasn’t sure why he needed to study in empty classrooms but she supposed it didn’t really matter as she would never need to look for him or meet him there. “We could check in with prefects via journal for the first week to make sure all of their rounds are going smoothly. We could also split up going on rounds with the new prefects for their first time, if you are amicable to the idea. An official meeting on the second week sounds like it would be most fitting.” Charmaine paused before congratulating Tiberius as well, echoing his sentiments. While formal, she did genuinely wish him the best of luck as Head Boy this year, considering whoever was Head Boy certainly must have deserved the position. She knew that she had certainly worked very hard for her position. “Thank you,” Tiberius replied in response to the congratulations. He thought he was the best candidate there was, though he wasn’t going to share that with Charmaine. Studying in the library meant just finding a spare table and sitting there with friends. The common room was better since it allowed more discussion, and empty classrooms meant chalkboards and working things out there as well. Although he never really noticed Charmaine in the library, it wasn’t as if he ever looked for her either. Her ideas had impressed him, and despite the formality, he looked at her with slight admiration. Nonetheless, he was back to being polite and distant right after. “Those are excellent ideas, Miss Travers. For the journals, it would be making sure that the prefects are enforcing the rules as well, although we’ve discussed that during the meeting. I think we should go on rounds with the new prefects and,” ugh, “perhaps discuss exactly what we want to go over and what we are looking for so that it is consistent. And the second week is a good time for a meeting, but if necessary, we can move it as well.” “In regards to journals, now that we have laid out the rules, perhaps we can follow your lead by leading by example. If you are willing, I could take the fifth year Slytherin and Hufflepuff prefects if you are willing to take Ravenclaw and Gryffindor. Once we settle in tonight, perhaps we will be able to further communicate through journals what our expectations will be. We will let the prefects know of such expectations via our first official journal perhaps in two days.” Charmaine found it rather easy to speak with Tiberius, perhaps because he was mostly agreeing with her. “Let us tentatively set the meeting on the second week, but we will announce it toward the end of the first week to see what time would be best for everyone.” Tiberius had nodded in agreement to the way the fifth year prefects were split up. "We could just meet up after class or breakfast as well," he offered. "It may be overwhelming when they are receiving all this other information, but I would rather the prefects know our expectations as soon as possible." Tiberius was still leaning in his seat and looking entirely comfortable when he seemed quite set as he said, "As for the meeting, we should just pick a time," despite it coming out as rather casual. Pfft, they were prefects. They should make the time for the meetings and if they didn't want to, they should turn in their badges. Then Tiberius popped another sweet into his mouth, even if they didn't taste the best with all the rationing. Charmaine nodded. “Honestly, I rather have all the information given upfront, even if it’s a bit overbearing, rather than being too lax and having them deviate due to poor leadership. As long as we’re both informative yet concerned for the well being as a whole, I believe it should be fine.” Although she felt rather irritated with Tiberius’ current demeanor, she pressed on. “Very well. I suggest either Sunday, Tuesday or Wednesday. I will leave the time up for you to decide.” “This coming Sunday?” Tiberius asked, when he was done swallowing. Well, he would have to rearrange his studying schedule for the week regardless of when it was. For the most part, he was in agreement with her about knowing things upfront. It also meant there were no excuses if something went against what they wanted. If they even agreed on what they wanted. He was staring at a spot above Charmaine’s head. “How is after dinner?” Even though they would have rounds that evening. “Yes.” A meeting at the start of the new week seemed best for Charmaine, but at this early on in the year, she did not mind too much. Taking care of her current responsibilities were important if she wanted the rest of her year to go smoothly. “After dinner is fine with me. We will have rounds following the meeting so we could discuss how the meeting went at that time.” Tiberius planted his hands on either side of him, as if preparing to push himself up to go. “I look forward to it,” he said politely, though he meant the words as much as he didn’t. Charmaine offered a small smile which disappeared quickly. Following his body language, Charmaine stood up, and began to make her way out of the compartment. “I’ll speak to you soon, Mr Ogden,” she said by the door. After standing, Tiberius took longer strides to reach Charmaine. He stuck out his hand to shake hers firmly. “I look forward to working with you, Miss Travers.” A beat and he made a slight face as he debated whether to add something. He did. “It’s all right if you just called me Tiberius.” Yes, he was probably going to be the more lax one. Despite her delicate looking hand, her handshake was firm. “And I with you,” she replied with a small nod. “Very well then, Tiberius,” she said after a pause, sliding the door open. Charmaine gave him one more nod and a half smile before heading off to find Walburga and Vesper. |
