WHERE The Great Hall

RATING G
STATUS Complete

Things were going to be much harder than she thought. Charmaine's assumptions were true: Gwen wasn't accepted among the Society children, despite her mother's blood. While Charmaine did her best to speak to Gwen and spend time with her in between classes, she needed a reputation that she needed to set as well. The first few months were crucial, said her brother, and she was going to take his words to heart. At least Gwen was able to do what she wanted, as she didn't necessarily have a reputation to uphold. She was outspoken, made friends, and fit into the Gryffindor house perfectly. Gwen would eventually be able to play Quidditch and soon enough, she would have a new best friend. All these things young Charmaine had already accepted, she was only sorry to not have told Gwen about this before they arrived at Hogwarts.

Over time, however, it started to become unacceptable. Maximilian continued to pressure Charmaine to cut ties, that their relationship would need to end now in order for her to flourish at Hogwarts. No one liked to be disliked, and some disapproving glances from some of her peers made her feel rather uncomfortable.

Charmaine was making her way out of the Great Hall by walking through where Gwen was seated, hoping Maximilian would not notice. She gave a sideways glance to the Slytherin table before returning a genuine smile. However, her smile immediately vanished when she heard the comments following their nonverbal interaction.

"Why are you talking to her?"

"She's a
Slytherin."

Charmaine's lips pursed slightly as she continued to exit the hall, head held high. It would be a lie to say that she wasn't affected by those comments, despite her calm and poised demeanour. She could hear Gwen loud and clear responding with a "So what?", despite the fact that she was almost out of hearing range. Charmaine felt her cheeks get warm, her eyes seemed to involuntarily water.

She realised how unfair this was for Gwen. That Charmaine was forced to be ashamed of her. Charmaine was ashamed of being ashamed of her very first best friend. Perhaps the best thing to do here was just to have a friendly break off. Charmaine would explain their situation to Gwen, that it would be easier for the both of them if they maintained their friendship through other means, such as journals at school or owls when they were on their hols. Gwen would protest and shout and be upset, but Charmaine knew that her rationality would eventually convince passionate Gwendolyn Morgan that this would be the best for the both of them before something went wrong.

Yes, she would speak to her tomorrow, perhaps before dinner, or after Transfigurations when they always walked together afterwards.

"Charmaine," came the assertive voice of her brother. Her heart dropped.

"Yes, Maximilian?" Charmaine slowly turned to see him making his way from the Great Hall.

"Had I not told you to no longer interact with the halfblood?"

Charmaine looked completely apathetic. "I am afraid I have no idea what you are speaking about."

"You are no longer on amicable terms with Morgan, then?"

"No," she lied.

"Very well. You will not be offended if I tell you the terrible things that Morgan was saying about you after you left the Great Hall then?" Charmaine stared at Maximilian blankly as he continued. "I believe stuffy purist may have been the term that she used, I did not stick around for long after hearing of their scheme tomorrow." Charmaine's expression broke off, as she looked almost in disbelief, and shook her head from side to side firmly. "I hear she was making some sort of bet; that you would be willing to say hello to her when she comes up to the Slytherin table tomorrow at breakfast." Charmaine quickly rose her chin up once again. "I don't believe you, but it matters none. I wouldn't speak to her even if she did."

The corner of Maximilian's lips curled slightly as he extended his arm. "Come, sister. Allow me to escort you back to the Common Room, I wish to hear about your day."

Charmaine took one last long look into the Great Hall which was still murmuring with students talking. She caught a glimpse of Gwen sitting, speaking with a girl across from her laughing. Surely her best friend would not betray her so. She didn't imagine Gryffindors to be so terrible, but perhaps she had just been fooling herself for Gwen. Looking back at Maximilian, she took her brother's arm and began to tell her about Potions class, even though her mind was completely occupied by thoughts of Gwen and tomorrow's breakfast.
