”Lie low at Lupin’s.”
Dumbledore’s request repeated itself in Sirius’ mind, at a perfect tempo to the pounding of his paws. The countryside passed him in a blur as he ran full-speed away from Hogwarts.
Lie low at Lupin’s. Voldemort’s back.
Somewhere near Liverpool, the reality had set in. He was back. Voldemort was back. If only he had actually gotten Peter --
No. He wouldn’t think about it. Everything had changed that evening, and his first task was to get to Remus‘s. True, he could have Apparated, but the feel of the ground below his feet again after so long was irresistible. It was one of those things Azkaban had taken from him.
Lie low at Lupin’s. Voldemort’s back.
Sirius couldn’t help but grin as the he watched the sun rise. Another hour and he’d have to stop running. He slowed his pace a little, enjoying the warmth of the new rays as they reached his black fur. Another thing he had missed while he was in prison.
Soon it became too obvious that a large black dog was running. Sirius ducked into an empty ally where he transformed back into human shape and quickly Apparated to Lupin’s place in Cornwall.
Panting, he leaned against the door frame as he knocked loudly. After a moment, the door opened.
“Sirius!” his old friend exclaimed. “What in Merlin’s name?” Remus moved aside to let him through.
Sirius made it to the couch before he collapsed. “He-he-he’s back. Vol-Voldemort’s back,” the news came in fits as Sirius tried to breathe normally.
Remus paled as he watched his friend catch his breath. After a moment, he found himself able to speak again, and he got a glass of water, offering it to Sirius. A grateful Sirius gulped down the glass in three sips.
“You look exhausted, Padfoot. You should probably lie down.” He had probably run all night long.
He’s back. Voldemort’s back.
Sirius finally asleep on the couch, Remus headed to his fireplace. Handful of Floo in hand, he called Dumbledore. The older wizard confirmed what Sirius had told him, and left Remus with instructions to keep an eye on Sirius for the time being, until the Order had a headquarters.
Sighing, Remus made himself a cup of tea and settled in with his favorite book. It was going to be a long day.
