Movie Night
Who: Shannan and Chelsea
Where: Shannan's place
When: Tuesday Evening, March 29
Shannan was pretty much at the point of exhaustion by the time she pulled onto the drive of the house she shared with a fellow doctor. She was also starving, which had probably been why she over ordered at the Chinese restaurant she had stopped into to get some carry out. Getting out of the car the blond shouldered her bag and then started walking the brick path that led to the front door carrying a large, brown paper bag with cartons of Chinese food inside.
It was about that time that Chelsea pulled into her own drive-way, having just finished filming a guest spot on the TV show 'Friends'. Hopping out of her car, she locked the doors and looked over to Shannan with a smile. "Long day?"
"Hey." Shanna glanced over hearing the familiar voice and gave the woman a weary smile. "Aren't they all." Well, maybe not for her neighbor, but for Shannan days sometimes seemed to stretch on for forever.
"Good point," Chelsea replied with a small, musical laugh. Being an actress, her schedule was fairly full. Especially since her last movie was so successful. She was just glad that she had a week or two off to focus on guest appearances and whatnot. "I'm fully prepared to unwind with a Julia Roberts movie and a glass of wine," she admitted. Julia Roberts was one of her favorite actresses, next to Meryl Streep, of course. "What about you?"
"I'm pretty much ready to crash, but," Shannan smiled tiredly lifting her bag of take-out slightly, "I haven't eaten since early this afternoon." And then after a brief moment of thought, Shannan added her thought. "Care to combine things?" She offered. "I think I have enough Chinese here to feed a small army."
Chelsea raised an eyebrow at the offer. At the very least, it would be nice to spend the evening with someone, rather then alone. "Sure. Give me a few minutes to get things? Oh, and are you feeling like comedy Roberts, or dramatic Erin Brockovich Roberts?"
"I think I could handle either." Shannan answered. "And don't feel you need to rush. It'll give me time to get things ready." A few minutes would do nicely for Shannan as it would give her time to spread out the cartons of Chinese out on the table in front of the couch and change out of the clothes she wore and into something more comfortable.
"Alright. I'll see you in a few," Chelsea replied, giving Shannan a soft smile before moving into her house. She made sure to feed her dog, Ollie, and then changed into jeans, sneakers and a white blouse. It wasn't a cold evening, and it wasn't exactly like she lived a mile away, so she didn't bother with a jacket. She collected a bottle of wine from the kitchen and then she consulted her video collection. She was half-tempted to pick up 'Stepmom' but thought better of it and picked 'Notting Hill' instead. Content with her decision, she told Ollie that she'd be back soon and made her way over to Shannan's house, actually stopping to knock on the front door, sweetly enough.
Shannan opened the door the her neighbor a couple seconds after the woman knocked. Dressed now in a pair of sweat shorts and over-sized tee, Shannan let the woman in and closed the door behind Chelsea after she entered. Barefoot, she led the way into the living room.
Chelsea smiled faintly and followed Shannan inside. She found it surprising that Shannan could make such unimpressive clothes look flattering, but didn't say that one out loud. She didn't want to give the wrong impression. "How are you settling in here?"
"Pretty good, actually. It's like having moved into a fully furnished apartment. There was very little I had to move over here from my hotel room." Shannan told her as she mentioned with a light wave of her hand for Chelsea to have a seat on the couch. "If you wouldn't mind getting the movie set up I'll go grab a couple glasses from the kitchen." Shannan then disappeared momentarily into the kitchen to get a couple glass for the wine Chelsea had brought over.
Chelsea did just that, setting the bottle of wine down on the coffee table before setting the tape in the VCR, actually managing to set it all up correctly (she was actually quite tech-savvy, which she was proud of) and setting it on pause, waiting for Shannan to return.
"So, what did you bring?" Shannan inquired of Chelsea as to which Roberts movie she had brought with her when she emerged from the kitchen with a set of glasses. Setting them down on the table, Shannan dropped herself down casually on the couch by Chelsea.
Chelsea smiled faintly and started to uncork the wine (given that she'd brought a waiter's friend with her as well). "Notting Hill," she replied. She liked the romantic aspects of the movie, personally. It gave the feeling of: it wasn't who you loved but how you loved, which appealed to her. She set to pouring them each a half a glass of wine, not wanting to overindulge, since Shannan said that she was tired. "Have you ever seen it?"
"I think that's one Julia Roberts film I missed." Shannan confessed to the other woman as she reached for one of the glasses half filled with wine. "I take it it's one you've seen more then once." She commented before taking a nice little sip of her wine.
Setting the bottle down, Chelsea pressed 'play' on the remote before lifting her own glass of wine and leaning back against the couch, crossing one leg under the other. "It is," she admitted with a short laugh, "I enjoy it. Hugh Grant is just lovely in it, as well." The fact that it was about an A-List actress finding love wasn't the only thing that appealed to her about this movie, obviously.
"I must confess to being part of the small majority of people who don't see what the appeal is that most people find in Hugh Grant." Shannan would take Johnny Depp over Hugh Grant any day, which would be quite evident should anyone get a peek at her movie collection. Still, regardless of her opinion of the actor, Shannan was willing to sit through a viewing of the movie. It did, after all, have Julia Roberts in it, so how bad could it really be.
"He does seem to be an acquired taste," Chelsea replied with a giggle. "But in saying that, I think I'd prefer a pale, stuttering Englishman over a chiseled, tanned squared-jawed character or actor. It's a bit more set in reality. But that's just me." She smiled softly and took a sip of her wine.
Shannan tipped her head slightly sideways and smiled to the other woman. "I think I'll stick with the chiseled, tanned square-jawed men." Not that there was anything wrong with pale faced, stuttering men. It was just Shannan's preference. Just like she sometimes found herself attracted to dark haired women, which just happened to be the case here with Chelsea. It had been why she extended her earlier offer to the woman.
"That's fair enough," Chelsea giggled. "I'll be damned if I kicked Brad Pitt out of bed, if I'm being completely honest." Oh, the cheeky thing! "What about women, then?" She asked curiously, raising an eyebrow as she took another small sip of her wine. "Do you find any women attractive, or is it strictly a one-way street for you?"
"God," Shannan gave a light, breathy laugh then, "this is a little embarrassing to admit, but I most own every movie Catherine Zeta Jones has made thus far." Not that she was embarrassed about it where she wanted to keep the fact that she was sometimes attracted to women, it was more that it was just something she rarely talked about. "So I suppose you could say I find some women attractive." Shannan glanced over at Chelsea then with a lingering glance that said it all.
Chelsea smiled. "That's good to know." The last thing that she wanted to do was bark up the wrong tree, after all. She set her glass down on the table in front of them and leaned over to grab a bowl of Chinese food, handing it to Shannan before retrieving her own. "I'd love to own a property on the English countryside," she murmured, meaning the movie they were 'watching', obviously. They made the occasional observation to each other as they ate, and set their bowls down on the table once they'd finished eating, only to finish off their glasses of wine, barely starting on a fresh glass when Chelsea started to nod off.
Shannan was enjoying the woman's company immensely. Chelsea was intelligent, a good conversationist and beautiful. What was there not to find attractive about her. And she would have made it through the entire length of the movie, except for the fact that she had been near exhausted when she arrived home from a 14 hour shift at the hospital. And the wine wasn't helping any as Shannan soon found herself nodding off after Chelsea.
One could only guess as to how long they stayed like that. It was only when a car backfired on their street that Chelsea jolted awake, looking around bleary-eyed for a moment as she tried to orientate herself. The movie had turned off and now there was something evangelical on TV... Chelsea wrinkled her nose before realizing that she was... oh dear. She was pressed against the back of the couch, one half of her body hooked around Shannan's – one leg hooked around her thigh and one arm around her waist, her cheek pressed to the other woman's shoulder. She blinked, trying to wake up. "Uh..." was all she could think to say. How had that happened?
The sound of a car back-firing wasn't what disturbed Shannan sleep, it was feeling Chelsea moving that had the blond stirring. Murmuring incoherently, Shannan shifted her position with the circle of the other woman's arm and leg and snuggled up against Chelsea. All she knew was there was a warm body next to her, and warm bodies were meant to be snuggled.
Chelsea blinked again, letting her eyes adjust to the light as she looked over Shannan's face. She looked... quite peaceful, didn't she? Smiling softly, she nuzzled into Shannan's neck lightly, taking in her scent before murmuring into her ear: "Shannan, you need to wake up. We're—you're not in bed."
"Mmmm." Shannan smiled in her sleep as if she wore having the most wondrous of dreams when Chelsea nuzzled gently at her neck. It was when the softly whispered words seeped into her unconsciousness that Shannan slowly woke with a fluttering open of her eyes. "Is it morning already?" The blond questioned not yet awake enough to realize the situation she was in with Chelsea.
"No, it's not morning," Chelsea murmured, keeping her voice light, as if speaking any louder would ruin this... intimate moment they were sharing. "We fell asleep watching the movie," she explained. Curiously, she didn't try to move away from Shannan, even though the position she was in was a little more... forward than she'd like.
"We... ? Oh god, I'm sorry." Blinking the sleepiness away, Shannan slowly moved to sit up on the edge of the couch running a hand through her hair. "I guess I was more tired then I realized." She said apologetically.
"I think we both were," Chelsea replied, slowly moving to sit beside Shannan. "I understand that your job is demanding, so you don't need to apologize." Sure, Chelsea worked long hours too, sometimes, but she wasn't saving lives now, was she? She rubbed a hand soothingly along Shannan's back. "Why don't you go up to bed? I can let myself out."
"Nonsense." Shannan told her. "I'm awake enough now to manage walking you out. Not that I'm trying to hint for you to leave." That brief nap had refreshed Shannan a bit to where she'd be better company should Chelsea want to stay just a little bit longer. "Besides what kind of hostess would I be if I left you to see yourself out."
"A tired one?" Chelsea replied with the barest hint of a cheeky grin. She ran her hand along the length of Shannan's back one more time before getting up, stretching out her arms and back. "I know that I have work tomorrow," early, actually, but she didn't want Shannan to feel guilty about that, "and presumably, you do too, so I'm going to insist that you go to bed."
"After I walk you out." Shannan said a bit insistently, and after she cleared away the Chinese food from the living room table, then Shannan would finally find her bed. "And there's no way you're going to talk me into doing otherwise." Shannan added with a smile curving along her lips.
Chelsea rolled her eyes at Shannan's persistence, but nodded agreeably, since there was no point in arguing. "I had a really good time. Even if we were unconscious for a chunk of it." She smiled softly and extended a hand to help Shannan get to her feet.
"I did too." Shannan smiled grasping Chelsea's offered hand to help her up. "Next time I promise not to be the bad hostess again and fall asleep." The blond said half jokingly standing up on her feet.
"Well, it was comfortable, at least," Chelsea replied with a soft smile before making tracks, stopping only once she'd reached the front door and turning to face Shannan again. "Maybe next time you could come to my place and I'll provide the meal," she suggested.
"I'm off on Sunday." Shannan told her, a bit amused that Chelsea had beat her to the punch in offering to get together again. And she suggested Sunday because she wasn't sure when her next day off might be, better to offer a date then play the wait and see game. If they went that route, Shannan might not ever make it over to the other woman's home for dinner.
"Well then, I'll see you on Sunday," Chelsea replied. She briefly considered kissing Shannan on the cheek, but changed her mind, thinking that to be just a little too intimate just then. What she did do, however, was rub a hand along Shannan's arm and smile softly. "Sleep tight." She opened the front door and took a step out. Oofh. She should have brought a jumper, after all.
"Good night." Shannan smiled as she reached for the door to hold it open as Chelsea took a single step through the theshold. "I'll see you Sunday." Though Shannan was sure she'd see the other woman before then, more likely in passing as they were next door neighbors. Regardless, the blond physician was now looking forward to her day off more then she had previously been.
