President Pierce? Admiral to Speak at Aeries Veterans Conference at Delphi |
||
Vice Admiral Conrad Pierce, Commander of Colonial 5th Expeditionary Forces, arrived on Caprica a few days ago for the bi-annual report on the peacekeeping efforts on Sagittaron. Since he took charge of the mission a year and half ago, the Colony has shown remarkable progress. He is credited for preventing a renewal of hostilities on the Colony after the assassination of Tom Zerek, and has become the darling of the Quorum. It has been reported before in this publication that Admiral Pierce had turned down the promotion to the Chairmanship of the Admiralty last winter in order to remain on as the Expeditionary commander. It was also reported that President Adar had offered him the prestigious position to keep him close and to squash any political ambition he harbored. Of course the Executive Mansion denies both accounts. Admiral Pierce has also denied that he holds any political ambition beyond his military service. Even as recently as last month the Premier of Libran has said she would stand behind Pierce if he decided to run for President of the Colonies in the next election. Speculation continues to grow two years before the next Colonial-wide elections. A year ago, he was not even considered in the running out of the field of possible candidates. Not until about six months ago when a handful of local pundits around the 12 Colonies recognized the name of his newly appointed aide-de-camp, Captain Jilleen Simmons. Unless you are from Aerilon and a close follower of politics around the Colonies, you would not have known she was the sister of the new governor of Aerilon, and the daughter of a popular formal-governor of Aerlion. I will admit that I had not heard of her either until a few months ago. Why do I bring this up you might ask? I've learned that she had been on Caprica for the last two weeks ahead of Admiral Pierce setting up various meetings and interviews for the Admiral this week. It may all be a coincidence to garner support for the mission on Sagittaron, which is all well and good, but politics is rarely a coincidence. Especially in light of leaders and celebrities expressing support for him long before the next election. If anyone is serious about running for the presidency, it will do them very well to speak at the Aeris Veterans Conference tomorrow. In the last 50 years, no candidate was elected to office without the support of the veterans, especially without the endorsement of the Aeries Veterans Group. If Sagittaron continues to stabilize and achieve the goals of the Quorum mandate, then a President Conrad Pierce is a very likely outcome in the next term. By Alex Troy |
