Raptor FR
Who: James Chase
Where: Outside the perimeter of Avalon's strike group.
When: When FORCECOM arrived.
In the cockpit of the newest variant of the Raptor for special operations, he turned the nob on the console to increase the range on the DRADIS sweep. Rather than sit and wait on the battlestar for new orders, James had took it upon himself to personally oversee the ungraded raptor they received a few days ago was combat ready. The advanced DRADIS array had to be calibrated. “There we go. It looks much better. Have Avalon confirm our distance.”
“Yes, sir,” replied the Electronic Warfare Office from the back cabin.
“Hold our position for a minute,” James told the pilot next to him. He watched the displays on the screen which indicated the locations of the escort and support ships of the Strike Group, and then made some minor adjustments with the turn of the nob.
Beep-beep, Beep-beep. The DRADIS alerted and highlighted new targets on the screen. A second later the targets were identified as 3 colonial forces raptors. “Goose, you think that’s FORCECOM?” asked the pilot.
“Maybe,” he said. James increased the zoom on the screen to focus on the raptor symbols to read the identification code which could at least tell him from which wing they were from. James read it twice, but did not want to get his hopes up. He had worked hard to keep his mind from worrying about Jilleen when news broke about the attack, followed by more depressing reports about some of the Colonies and the state of the fleet. Could she be aboard one of those raptors?
“Well look, First C. E. F.” said the pilot. After a moment, “Frak it’s that bad? What happened to the Fleet commanders?”
“I’ll take Pierce,” for the first time since Avalon went to Condition One, James smiled. All the troubles between him and Jilleen were not important anymore. He wanted to see her again. “Hey, we get that distance confirmation?”
“Just got it,” replied the EWO.
“It’s sure bet FORCECOM has battle orders for us. Let’s get back Avalon.” The advanced Raptor turned and headed back to Avalon and her strike group which was not even visible from their distant location.
