Tension and release
WHO: Jilleen Simmons & James Chase
WHERE: His quarters after the pinning ceremony.
WHEN: After the pinning ceremony, Y02/12/05
“Thank you, sir.” James shook the Admiral Pierce’s hand. “And it’s was honor to have you administrate the oath.”
“My pleasure, Major, anytime,” said the Admiral. “The fleet could use more high-caliber officers, such as yourself and your wife. “
James glanced at his wife who stood beside the Admiral and for a moment locked eyes with her. He got an approving nod from her. “Sir, we can only do our best.” He felt he did not require her approval. It was like she done at other social gatherings of the high and powerful, prompting him to say the right things. He respected the Admiral, it was simple as that, and hated the talk about his political future.
“Affirmative,” Pierce looked at his aide. “Say I meet at the hanger deck in an hour, Captain.”
“Yes, sir, thank you,” replied Jilleen before Pierce left them to prepare for the journey to Tauron. She still had things to pick up from James’s quarters. He already packed everything in a bag she left behind.
James left the wardroom with her. The uneasiness between them which was hidden during the pinning ceremony returned as they walked through the corridors without a word to each other. Jill was pleasant and even praised him in front of the others during the short meeting. She always knew how to put on a good face in public.
When they got to his quarters the wireless was playing, having been left on since earlier. The couple went inside the room without sharing a word. Jill went straight to where she left one of her bags in a locker. The wireless played the stock market report:
“…The Capricorn one-thousand lost nearly six percent of it’s value today, the worst rapid decline in twelve years. The frenzy sell off of key stocks was halted when the bell rang to the relief of traders.”
