Recent history had proven to be very chaotic. They'd taken Nessie away to New York City as a precaution and Rosalie had loved every minute of it up until their last few moments in the big city. She knew of the underlying danger that had motivated their need to take her away, but had chosen to keep it in the back of her mind until it was forced front and center when they were followed by that vampire. That incident had really shaken Rosalie up, despite the dangers they'd faced in the past. It wasn't the first time she'd parted from Emmett when there was a threat to the family (that had been when they'd been dealing with James and Victoria several years ago), but she hadn't been very eager back then and she'd barely been able to do it this time, too. Rosalie was fiercely attached to Emmett, and leaving him to fight in an unknown situation had been impossibly hard for her, even if it was to protect Nessie. In fact, protecting their niece was the only reason she'd been able to go.

Even now, after being home for a short while, Rose was rarely far from his side. She left him alone to play his video games or when he was playing around with the other boys but for the most part she could be found draped in his lap or curled up next to him on the couch when they weren't in their room. This was hardly new behavior for them anyway, but there was more of an urgency to her affection. She was sure it didn't go unnoticed by her adopted twin and younger brother, but she didn't care. Rosalie didn't have special gifts like them that could help her keep Emmett safe. She was vicious in her own right, but not nearly as lethal as she wished she could be in battle. She knew that the events that had recently taken place were weighing on Emmett's mind too, even if he didn't say it out loud. She just knew, because she knew him and how big his heart was.

Rosalie shifted slightly, but did not untangle her limbs from being entwined with her husband's. She just wanted to be in a better position to look at him, his face specifically. That face, his baby face, was so precious to her. She trailed her index finger up the center of his sculpted chest and smiled a little at Emmett. "You didn't break the bed," she said, gazing at him. It seemed like a playful comment, but there was concern meshed in with it. "What are you thinking about?"

The past events and things that had happened recently had been bugging Emmett lately. He was trying not to think about them too much, trying not to let them get to him. He, Rose, and Nessie had been having a great time in New York. Of course, Nessie missed her parents and Jacob, but he and Rose were just trying to keep her safe. That idea backfired on them, when a vampire had snuck up on them and tried to get Nessie away from them. All this talk about whether or not the vampire had been Volturi was driving Emmett crazy. He realized after the fact that yeah, he probably should have found out who that vampire was. It was the smart thing to do, it should have been the first thing out of his mouth. But at the time Emmett had been more preoccupied with protecting his wife and niece, as well as himself, and then he needed to make sure he went back to Rose.

Emmett had a reputation for being somewhat dense, not exactly on top of things, but he noticed more than he let on. He could tell that it had killed Rosalie to leave him back there in the woods to fight on his own, and he knew she had attached herself to him upon his return for that exact reason. He didn't mind, of course. He never minded having her around. She was his angel, his entire world, after all. And he had hated telling her to leave as much as she hated leaving, but Nessie had to be protected. So when she asked him to meet her up in their room while he was playing his video games, he didn't need to be asked twice. He knew she was missing him and she needed to be near him, so he went to her right away.

Things had gotten carried away between them, like they usually did, and the two of them lay in the bed in their room, Emmett's arms wrapped tightly and protectively around his wife. Glancing down at her as she made the comment about the bed, Emmett smiled at her and nodded. "I didn't think Esme would want to buy us a new one so quickly after we got this one, so I went a little easy on the bed this time around," he explained, giving her one of his big smiles. He sighed softly as she asked him what he was thinking, and he ran one of his hands down her back. "I'm thinking about New York," he told her. Emmett didn't see any reason to lie to her, they never lied to each other. "And about everything that went down at the end," he added, glancing down at her.

His answer didn't surprise her, but she wanted him to confirm it himself before she tried to soothe him of his worries. Rosalie often didn't care about the concerns of others, but with Emmett, she never wanted him to be upset. Of course, she smiled and pressed a kiss to his shoulder as he joked about the bed. That boyish smile he had always managed to lift her spirits, even when she was in her lowest mood. His hand on her back drew a soft purr from her lips; she was still a little sensitive after their bedroom antics.

"I could have guessed," she replied, a small frown creasing her otherwise perfect features. Her hand slowly trailed back down his chest to slide over his stomach and allow her to drape her arm across. She turned her head to she could rest her chin on his chest and look at him properly. "Everyone believes you did the right thing, Em," she said. "I know you did."

Glancing down at her as she spoke, Emmett frowned a little as he took in her frown. He didn't like seeing her upset, it bothered him a lot. Moving his hand to gently stroke back and forth over her arm that she draped over him, Emmett laid his head against the pillow and glanced up at the ceiling. "I know everyone does," he said, letting his brow furrow a little bit. He glanced down at her and gave her a small smile as she told him she knew he did the right thing, and Emmett nodded. "Yours is the only opinion that really matters to me, you know that," he told her, his fingers slowly and gently continuing to trail over her arm.

Sure, Carlisle and Esme's opinion of him mattered to him, as well as the rest of the family, but nobody's mattered nearly as much as Rosalie's. Hers was the only one that had the power to completely make him change what he was doing. "It just bothers me that we have no idea who that guy was. Whether he was Volturi, or if he was just some vamp that heard Nessie's heartbeat. And there's no way to know," he said, sighing. "I don't regret what I did, not at all. I was just keeping you and Ness safe," he said, his hand moving up to stroke her cheek softly. "And you know that I'd do anything to keep you safe," he added.

The crease in her brow smoothed as he stroked her arm. It was difficult for her to be upset at all while he was touching her. "Yes, I do know that," she said with a bit of a smile. It worked both ways. Her opinion was what mattered to him, and in turn, his words were usually the only words that could reach her when she was being stubborn about something or set in her ways. He was her voice of reason, so to speak.

"It just seems too coincidental for it to be some random vampire," she said. "If he picked up on Nessie's hearbeat, he still would have seen us with her. Wouldn't he have assumed she was our .. meal..? I don't think he would have gone to all that trouble to feed on a child with two other vampires around." Rosalie didn't like discussing Nessie in terms of food, but she didn't know how else to describe her thoughts. "It just seemed too pinpointed, especially with what we know about the Volturi."

Her eyelids fluttered and her posture relaxed as he stroked her cheek. She turned her head towards his hand and kissed his palm, then nuzzled it. "It was so hard for me to leave you there," she confessed softly. "I knew you'd come back to me, but, I never want to be away from you. Especially in a situation like that."

Emmett listened as Rosalie rationalized the experience, and he sighed, nodding. “Yeah, I know. You’re probably right, some random vampire wouldn’t have attacked us,” he said, shaking his head. “I just … I really don’t want to think that it was Volturi. Because that means that they’re following us everywhere, there’s really nowhere that Nessie is 100% safe, and that bothers me. Sure, all of us will do everything we can to keep her safe, keeping her constantly surrounded by people is a necessity. But the fact that they were able to find us in New York just bothers me,” Emmett shook his head again, sighing softly.

Glancing down at her as she nuzzled her cheek against his palm, Emmett let a soft smile cross his face. She had the ability to make him feel better about anything, with very little effort. All it took was a soft kiss, and he was immediately feeling 100% better. Furrowing his brow a little bit as a small frown crossed his face, Emmett nodded. “I know, angel. And I hated telling you to go, but I thought it probably would have been the best course of action. Getting you and Nessie out of there while I kept the vampire occupied,” he sighed, nodding. “I hate leaving you anywhere,” he added, leaning his head in to kiss her forehead, closing his eyes for a few moments. “You mean the world to me, you know that,” he added.
