Entry tags:2023: 11/november, character: amara montague, character: brooke pritchard

Who: Amara and Brooke
When: The evening of her date with Leonard.
Where: The McLaggen, Pritchard and Montague flat
Rating: PG-ish?
Status: In progress, private

"Merlin," Amara muttered, uncharacteristically giving way to her emotions, as she picked up a shoe from the floor of her closet. It and its twin had once been her favourites, but the miserable English rain had taken care of that. Rain on my parade, why don't you, she thought, a grim smile twitching her lips at her pun. Ravenclaw she was, she could still gain amusement from such things.

However, the fate of her shoe was anything but a laughing matter. Amara had nice clothes, but both her finances and her globe-hopping tendencies meant that her wardrobe was quality over quantity. She made each item stretch further by clever use of accessories, upgrading them with each season's fashion by purchasing a new purse and a scarf in this year's shade. Careful use of protective charms meant that these shoes had stood her well since her sixth year in school, but like most other things English in her life, the weather here had put paid to that. "Don't be so melodramatic," she murmured to herself, then set about re-evaluating her outfit.

Brooke had decided she wanted a drink. After so many nights of wine drinking with Saoirse and Amara she'd gotten used to having a glass practically every night. She was on her way to the kitchen when she thought she should probably check if her flatmates wanted a drink too so instead of heading straight to the kitchen she stopped at Amara's door. "Hey do you want a-" she started, pushing open Amara's door. Instantly she noticed that Amara was trying to put together an outfit. As much as Brooke didn't want to be the shopping obsessed pureblood cliche like her mother she did like shopping and had style (or so she liked to think).

"Need help?" she asked instead.

"You could say that." Her flatmates being two of the few people who she willingly had time for, Amara gave Brooke a smile as the other girl entered. "I've picked out a dress, only the shoes I was going to wear with it are ruined, and no other pair will quite do and so, now I find myself back at square one." She settled back on her haunches, surveying her half-opened wardrobe. "I've always thought that claiming one has nothing to wear comes from disorganisation, but now I believe that the English weather is at fault. Or insufficient protective charms. Suede and rain water are not good allies," she added with a wry grin.

"The weather really doesn't help with looking good, that's for sure." Brooke agreed. Between rain ruining shoes and causing carefully straightened hair to go curly again rain was not a good thing. She thought to her own shoe collection, wondering if there was anything in there that could work. A good thing about being a witch was that clothes could (usually) easily be charmed to fit better. "What sort of shoes were you hoping for?"

"Yes, the climate in Italy was more...forgiving." Amara pursed her lips thoughtfully. "Next time I buy anything suede, I will cast the charms myself."

Straightening up once again, she restored her original choice of dress to its hanger and sent it back towards her wardrobe with a flick of her wand. She could have as easily tucked it away herself within a few footsteps if she had chosen to - and Amara was not one to do magic for its own sake - but the gesture helped rid herself of some of the frustration she felt. "The second party won't, I believe, take me to one of the more rustic locales. So what I was considering originally was a cocktail dress, and I wanted closed toed and fairly basic shoes to round out its more...form fitting aspects."

While there was a lot to be said about accessorising herself with false modesty when appropriate, she could not deny that she was similarly in possession of a good figure. And meeting with one's former boyfriend was the time to hint at it, if only to show what he was missing out on.

Brooke was about to start trying to think of an appropriate sort of outfit when she actually realised what Amara was saying. "Wait, do you have a date?" she asked curiously. Brooke had to admit she loved knowing the latest gossip about her friends and luckily, thanks to Saoirse's latest adventures there seemed to be quite a bit of it. "Who with? Is he fit?" Just because she had a boyfriend of her own didn't mean she couldn't appreciate other guys, especially if they were really attractive.

She walked over to Amara's closets and started rifling through it for what she considered a suitable date outfit. "I think a dark coloured cocktail dress would look really nice."

"Leonard Zabini." Saying the truth outright would probably prevent the rumours from flying, and while the last person who she had trusted - well, as much as Amara could trust anyone - had let her down badly, she felt that she could rely upon Brooke to be discrete. "I offered him the chance to talk a few weeks ago, and now I suppose he's finally taken me up on it. After all-" she gave Brooke a bracing smile "-I can hardly see him having a heart-to-heart with his sister, can you?"

That said, she moved over to where Brooke was standing, leafing through her wardrobe. "Dark would be the safest, yes." Amara was a big fan of darker shades, especially black and navy. A darker hue made the item in question more versatile and cut-wise, allowed it to get away with a multitude of sins that a lighter - or, Rowena forbid, red - could never.

Brooke raised her eyebrows at this. "Leonard Zabini?" she repeated. "As in your ex-boyfriend Leonard Zabini?" Revisiting ex-boyfriend? That was interesting. Though it made sense when Amara mentioned talking. Leonard probably did need someone to talk to, considering what had happened.

Brooke smirked at the idea of Leonard and Renee having a heart to heart. "Now that would be an interesting conversation." she said, as she continued to look through Amara's clothes. "Dark allows for more options accessory wise too." she commented. "I like the cut of this dress." she said, pulling one of Amara's dresses out of the wardrobe and passing it to her. "And this one." There were a few dresses in Amara's closet she liked, actually, now she was looking in it. "This one is rather elegant too."

"As far as I'm aware, there is only one Leonard Zabini. I doubt he would allow it otherwise." Humour helped hide the nerves she was feeling, and would perhaps lead Brooke to believe that she was taking this more formal reunion (in comparison to bumping into him in lifts, that is) as lightly as she would like. "This one has always been one of my favourites," she continued, selecting a black sheath dress. "But while I don't consider it to be immodest, perhaps strapless might give him the wrong idea? We do work together, so that would be unwise."

"I have to say I'm glad there is only one if him. I'd be a little worried otherwise." Brooke replied with a smile. "It's nice of you to offer to be the one he can talk to." she added. "I'm sure he'll appreciate it." Brooke mightn't have always gotten along with Renee but she did still count her as one of her friends and hoped things would clear up with the Zabini's soon and thought that Amara going out with Leonard might at least be a good distraction, if not helpful as finding someone to listen could often be.

"Strapless probably isn't the best idea then." Brooke agreed. "So something modest yet still suitable as a cocktail dress?" she clarified as she began looking through the closet again.

"Yes. I daresay one is quite enough - for world domination or whatever it is that he's planning these days," she said breezily, scanning the rack of clothing as Brooke ruffled through them. Without saying so, she was ruling out anything given to her by Donato. Wearing an item from one ex to meet with another was classless beyond description, according to Amara. Finally she came to a fitted satin halter dress of a dark blue that was pretty but still subdued enough for a dinner date. "Perhaps this will do. Have you ever been to the Amaranth before?"

"World domination is probably about right." Brooke joked. Really, it was probably a good thing Saoirse and Eric had broken up now she thought of it. If Amara was going to be dating someone vying for world domination (even if that had only been a joke) and Saoirse was still dating the Minister's son things could've been really interesting. Plus Meriweather would start to look rather boring in comparison.

"That dress is stunning." Brooke said, admiring the dress Amara had stopped at. "Elegant but modest enough and a nice colour." She shook her head in response to the question about the Amaranth. "No, not yet but I hear it's nice." she replied. "You'll have to tell me if it's good so I can hint to Meriweather to take me."

"I'll be sure to. In front of him, if possible." The corners of Amara's mouth twitched at that. "Of course, Meri is clever enough to see through the hint, but gentlemanly enough not to ignore it. I can see you getting your evening out very soon."

Standing in front of her mirror (which had a tendency to chatter, but was fortunately silent with Brooke in the room), she hung the hanger over her neck and eyed the dress appraisingly. "I think it needs simple jewelry. Perhaps just some earrings. And perhaps a shawl in case the neckline is somewhat inappropriate for the venue?" Nothing Amara owned, in her opinion, could ever be classed as completely inappropriate.

"I'd appreciate that greatly." Brooke grinned. A nice night out with Meriweather was always nice. "I love that some people know how important acting on hints is."

She nodded as Amara hung the dress over her neck. "Simple Jewellery would be best." she agreed. Too much would just be overkill with that dress. "Just little studs for earrings, nothing too dangly I think." For a classy look that was what would look best. "Small diamonds or pearls maybe?"

"Yes, if the men in our lives are smart enough to pick on hints, then why should we have to spell things out?" Amara reasoned, albeit in a tongue-in-cheek manner. While she preferred the softly, softly approach, she could be rather forthright herself when necessary. "And I do have pearl studs."

"Unfortunately there are still some who need things spelt out for them." she said. Thankfully, not too many she herself knew well. But there were still some. "Pearl studs sound perfect then." Brooke said. "Shall I leave you to get ready? You can show me how you look before you leave to make sure it's perfect."

"Oh, I have a rather too honest mirror to help me out," Amara said, waving her hand towards the implement in question. "Even the most elegant of us needs some assistance from time to time. Thank you for yours, for that matter."
