Who: Paul Coote & Sylvia Peakes
Where: Gryffindor Common Room - maybe, idk?
When: November 3rd, 2023 (slightly backdated now); After Dinner
What: Monthiversary Gift Exhange
Rating: S for Sappy.

It was safe to say that they'd been unbearably cuddly all day. They weren't the sort of couple that snogged during classes or in the halls but Sylvia and Paul had their own brand of PDA. For them it was about holding hands, little smiles across the room during classes, carrying books and eating off each other's plates. There had been an abundance of it in every class and every meal. Their friends were probably used to this sort of behavior but it still had to be a bit annoying. It wasn't actually like it had gotten that much more intense when they'd started dating last Spring though. This was what was normal for them. It wasn't as if complaining was ever going to change how close they were or how they did things.

They were teenagers. They did teenage things sometimes. Kisses were pretty much only pecks on the cheek or lips but nothing was ever extreme in public. They were smart enough to keep private stuff private. They were old-fashioned in that. There was never any rush or push to do much of anything that they didn't feel like doing. They just did things when they felt like doing them. There was no real pressure to do anything or to be anything that they weren't. That was why they worked so well with each other. It didn't hurt that they'd known each other for so long that they could finish each other's sentences sometimes. Knowing Paul inside and out was an asset.

That was why Sylvia was excited for their monthiversary. Alone time was infrequent with their clubs and Paul's prefect duties. They also had to make time for their friends. It worked out that they happened to share a lot of the same friends and so they were still technically spending time with each other. There was a difference between uno parties with their yearmates and getting to go off somewhere alone. Even if they were never shy about the fact they were in fact together, they did have some modesty. Maybe not a whole lot but a little.

There wasn't some big plan about what they were going to do or where they were going to do it. Sylvia hadn't really done much planning aside from wanting to spend time with him without having distractions or comments around (depending on who was hanging out with them). She'd slipped upstairs for a few minutes after dinner to brush her hair and grab a sweater in case they decided to venture out of the common room. She had his present rolled up with a ribbon around it in her left hand when she came down. She had found her green ink and completed it. She hadn't actually spent money. They had lots of monthiversaries though the fifth month anniversary was totally an acceptable month for something homemade.

When she reached the common room again, she sat in her and Paul's favourite corner of the Common Room and decided to wait. There were a few people around but it wasn't that overcrowded yet.

Paul too had to run up to his dorm room though it wasn't to tidy up. He had to grab Sylvia's gift from where it had been living since the last Hogsmeade weekend. Sure it had been difficult to sneak the fish past Sylvia but he knew it would be worth it when she saw it. Because he knew that she would understand that this was more than a fish, it was a reminder of the promises they'd made to each other. A physical representation of the things that they'd been planning longer than they really knew what it was that they were actually planning.

He'd transfigured the fishbowl so that it had a clear handle which allowed for easy fish transportation. He was thankful for having done so as he carefully carried the fish down the stairs and through the normal chaos of the Common Room. A huge smile broke out when he saw her and he was amazed (as always) that a girl as pretty as she was had chosen him.

Sylvia's eyes caught sight of Paul and then what he had in his hands. She couldn't see the fish inside of it at first but she could tell it was a tank of some sort. He knew better than to try and give her a snake. She was terrified on them. She saw water which meant it was a water animal. Fish! Was this what her present was? A fish. She felt overly excited at the prospect of Paul getting her one. It was sort of silly but it wasn't just about a fish.

They'd talked so many times about getting fish when they had their own place and what they'd name them. They had all sorts of plans but fish were always part of that. Paul had given her a bunch of weird gifts over the years. One of the most recent being her weathervane. This was the perfect gift though. And unless it was meant to throw her off from the real gift, she was super excited about it! How could he possibly top a fish though?

"PAUL - IS THAT A FISH?" she asked loudly jumping to her feet to look at the fish. She wanted to hug him but he'd have to set the fish down first. She didn't want to kill their fish right away. "You got US a fish?"

Paul's grin widened, "Sylvie, I'd like you to meet Finnigan. Fish number one in a long line of f-named fishes," he held the fish up for Sylvia to inspect.

"I transfigured the bowl so there would be a handle so you could bring him down sometimes for me to visit. I have fish food and things too but they're still up in my dorm. I'll bring them down later."

Paul felt like his whole body was vibrating with happiness, Sylvia's reaction was just what he was hoping it would be.

Sylvia would never get sick of people calling her Sylvie. It had somehow turned into a pet name lately. There weren't that many ways to turn Paul into anything though. Paul was just Paul. It was a name that stood alone. If she could have thought of some way of making it cuter, she would have though. Instead, she just beamed proudly examining Finnigan. Yes, Finnigan Coote. Their little goldfish. Their first goldfish.

"He's perfect. Our little Finn will be an excellent first fish," she told Paul. She wasn't sure what his food schedule was at the minute. She didn't want him to be hungry or anything. It was the motherly thing to do to ask. "He's not hungry at the minute, is he?"

Finn was amazing and she wanted to spend time just watching him. She did! That's why she took the handle from Paul's hand and set him on the small table near where she'd been sitting. They could keep an eye on him. She then, gave Paul a look that said to sit down. She still had his gift in her hand and it felt a bit silly next to his fish. Now she sort of wished she'd spent money.

"Your gift is no where near as awesome as Finn," she confessed.

Paul shook his head at Sylvia's question, "No, I fed him this morning so he should be good until tomorrow morning."

It made him happy beyond words to see that she liked the gift and that she understood it to be what he'd intended it to be. Which probably said something for how well she knew him. Not that he didn't know her equally well but there were moments when it didn't matter how well he knew her or how much he loved her she was still a girl and therefore unexplainable.

He thought it was cute that she was so worried about her gift, he didn't think she quite realised that she didn't have to give him anything for him to think that she'd given him the world, "I doubt that's possible," he said with a smile.

Sylvia nodded at Paul's explanation that he'd already fed Finn. She wouldn't worry about that until later. She'd have to remember to keep feeding it every day. Maybe her roommates would remind her until they set up a pattern. It was a bit like having a kid. They had to make sure Finn lived a long fish life. She wasn't even sure how long fish lived but she wanted it to be an elderly fish when it left them.

She was really happy about her gift. More so than she could properly express. She was a girl though. Worrying about Paul liking his presents was a natural thing. She handed over the rolled up parchment tied with a red ribbon around it. She hoped he'd get what she was trying to say but she wasn't sure.

"It's not perfect," she said barely able to wait for him to undo the ribbon and get a good glance at it. "I want to redo it later and maybe have it framed and charm it so I can add more little spots for when we have kids and stuff. I might reorganize it. I mean, maybe Raleigh and the triplets should have switched sides. I think the general idea is there though."

He unrolled and looked it over carefully before settting it aside so he could give Sylvia a huge hug and a kiss on the cheek, "It's perfect. The start of our family tree. And I'd love to have it framed so we can keep it over the fireplace wherever we live. And alter it however makes you happy because I love it as it is and I'm sure I'll love whatever changes you make to it."

Sylvia would have asked about their fireplace but really it made sense that they'd have one. How else were they going to properly make s'mores all the time. They needed the fire! It would be perfect for those, snuggling and sitting in front of it reading stories to their kids. Every little detail that they added to their future life made her smile.

"It'll be better when we have all out little J P AND J S babies," she told him cheerfully. "I can't wait until we have our own big tree - and that fireplace. In a few years from now on this anniversary maybe we'll have our first one and we'll be reading bedtime stories."

Paul looked down at the tree and then back up at Sylvia. He knew that his friends thought him a bit off for planning things with Sylvia but he just knew that it was all right and didn't see any reason not to have the life he wanted right away.

"I can't wait either. I know I said the other day that I don't want to fast forward, and I don't because I don't want to lose time with you, but I really do wish that we'd already started everything. That we were graduated with jobs and all that."

Sylvia cast a glance around the room. There were some younger years playing exploding snap on the other side of the room. She mentally willed them to go to bed. Hearing Paul say things say things like that always inspired her to want to kiss him more than a peck. A peck would have to do though. She reached for his hand to raise to paper and sprawl it out to block their faces before stealing a small kiss.

"I couldn't resist," she confessed happily. "Everything will be nice when we're settled and we don't have to be as considerate of others. I'm the happiest woman ever at the moment though. I don't think I could be much happier."

"Right now I couldn't agree more," he paused for a moment in consideration, "But I think we will be. But then I can't imagine not being happy with you," Paul said with absolute honesty and sincerity.

And he did mean everything he said. He knew that a lot of blokes said things like that to get girls to do what they wanted them to do but that seemed crazy to him. He told Sylvia the truth always even when it made him look bad.

That was the thing though. Paul had no reason to ever lie to her about that stuff. They both knew their plan on that stuff and really there was no pressure. They didn't have to worry about it. It wasn't even close to a concern.

Him lying was never a thought that crossed her mind when he was saying stuff like this. She generally didn't worry about him though. Paul was always honest with her. That was the sort of relationship they had.

"Do you think we'll have a boy or girl first?" she asked randomly making happy conversation. She'd thought about it some. It was 2-4 in girls in his family. The triplets had an unfair advantage though since there was three of them. She wanted to sit snuggled up with Paul and talk about that stuff now.

He pulled her down to the sofa so they were sitting side by side, "I think that the first is going to be a girl. Which makes me happy. I'm used to girls."

Paul loved conversations like this because it gave him an even better idea of what things would be like for them after school and with each new detail he felt more and more antsy for that future to come. He honestly felt that if school wasn't an issue that he would happy marry Sylvia tomorrow.

Sylvia moved her legs sideways over his lap and leaned her head into his shoulder. She wasn't happy if they weren't touching. They were always touching somehow, it felt like. She was always antsy when she couldn't. Sometimes, she'd even steal his hand in class if they were lucky enough to be sitting next to each other and could do such without the Professor catching on to it. It helped many a lecture pass them by.

"I'd sort of like a boy," she confessed with a laugh. "I mean, I'd want him to be just like you only you know - baby sized. I don't think giving birth to a full-sized you would be much fun. I think that sounds particularly painful. I could live with a little girl though. Eventually, we'll hopefully get plenty of both."

They did want their big family after all. She couldn't control what they got but she could hope for a good mix. Having healthy and happy things was the main thing.

"That's why I love you," she said aloud before catching herself.

It was strange really to plan their future when she hadn't yet verbalized the fact she was in-love with him. It was an understood. Sure he knew she loved him. She'd always loved him though. She'd never exactly said the whole 'I Love You' thing despite the fact she'd mentioned to Louis that she did in fact feel that way. It hadn't exactly felt like it needed to be said though and every time she'd come close there had been mass chaos in the school or someone would interrupt them.

It was out now.

Paul and Sylvia didn't kiss in public. Ever. Until now. And even when Paul kissed her it was tamer than most of what they saw daily from their classmates. But her finally saying she loved him required that he kiss her even if it was in front of the entire common room.

The kiss itself didn't last for more than a few seconds but he rested his head against hers afterward, "I love you too, Sylvie. Forever and always."

Even though she'd already knew it, hearing those words come out from his mouth made her so happy. She was so overjoyed. She was glad to have them out and okay in everyday conversation. She was over the top about it really because it was so much better to be in love than to just love someone.

She forgot her manners and leaned forward to steal another brief kiss. This was a landmark day. They were breaking their own rules. "I can't wait to be your wife," she told him quietly which really being quiet when they were talking to each other was something in itself. They were never quiet. But if they were going to be an impossibly larger amount of mushy than normal, this was a requirement. "I could get used to hearing that every night and every morning and a million times in between."

He wrapped his arm around her shoulders and kissed the top of her head, "You will get used to it. We both will."
