What's In My Bag Meme
What's In My Bag Meme from fitz_carraldo.

1. My purse. I’ve been using it for about a year and a half since I got is last spring at a “Share Your Stuff” exchange that was held at Whole Foods when I was working there.
2. A $25 Barnes & Noble giftcard—a couple of my co-workers gave it to me at my farewell party right before I left Chicago in September.
3. Chapstick from ALDI’s. Probably toxic.
4. An admissions badge from the Corning Glass Museum where my father and I stopped on our trip back from Chicago.
5. A purple Hello Kitty notepad.
6. My wallet—many years old and a bit overfilled. It’s pink and has the Sanrio character My Melody on it.
7. Bath & Body Works vanilla scented anti-bacterial hand lotion. I can’t use regular anti-bacterial gels because they dry my skin out but this works well.
8. Something my sister got for me this summer at G-Fest (a massive Godzilla collectors show). I think it’s some sort of a cell phone ornament from Japan of a Kewpie in a panda suit.
9. Condoms. Just because I haven’t had sex since 2002 doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be prepared.
10. Pens.
11. A crumpled tissue.
12. A zip-loc snack bag containing 3 quarters. Left over from when I was in an apartment and had to go out to the Laundromat to do my washing every week.
13. My leopard spotted Hello Kitty checkbook.

Hiiiiiii.
*comes up for air*
OH GOD, FLIST. Is there any better feeling in the world than finishing a deadlined-fic and sitting back, cracking a beverage of your choice, and just, like, not writing fic for at least 24 hours? a;lskjdf. I like writing fic, don't get me wrong. But that feeling you get after finally finishing something you've been sort of chewing on for awhile? Yeah. That's a damn good feeling. :D
Fic-writing binge included making a pot of coffee and writing several thousand words on my birthday last week, which, aaaaaah, how awesome is that?! It was a great day overall, for several reasons, and thanks so much to everyone who wished me well or got me awesome v-gifts and things like that. ♥ ♥ ♥ ! I really appreciated it. Fic-writing in pyjamas with coffee and chocolate! Nothing better.
I have fic recs from like a hundred years ago that I need to write up, and how on earth is it already December 1 tomorrow?! Well, better do it tomorrow, or you'll all be distracted with shiny holiday fests starting. :)
Speaking of which... you're all posting about which ones you'll be watching, so, sure, here goes: my one real commitment is smutty_claus, because that's the only one I'm in, but I'm also going to keep an eye on snupin_santa, naturally, and probably hp_yule_balls and/or hd_holidays a little bit.
And! r_grayjoy kindly reminded me this morning that I have potential gifts coming from prompts I submitted to daily_deviant's Kinky Kristmas fest! Not that I'd forgotten it was happening, but I did forget I'd left prompts a few months ago. *headdesk* I just went back and checked my prompts and THEY ARE AWESOME and got claimed and stuff so I'm super excited to see them. :) By the way, listen: I tend to run around the internet leaving prompts wherever they're solicited, so if you've ever claimed one that is meant to have names attached (I always assume they're just sort of going in an anon pile) and written something for me and I haven't seen it because I fail, point it out to me PLEASE. :)
Random: smutty_claus and Kinky Kristmas have my favourite banners and icons so far, though. Hiiiiii, sexy women in lingerie and boots and stuff. ♥
No matter what fests you're following, though, be sure to take a second and leave a few words of feedback if you see something you like. It doesn't have to be long, and it doesn't have to take much of your time, but OH MY GOD it means the world to an author or artist to know you saw and liked their stuff. :)
Signing off with a teenyfic!rec: The Old School Tie by hereticalvision (Harry/Scorpius, PG-13, 300 words). This was the winning entry in last week's Harry/Scorpius Last Drabble Writer Standing contest, for the theme of 'detention,' and it was this wonderful, creative take on the theme. Totally made me smile.
*re-uploads holiday icons, whee!*

current and future reading
A couple of days ago I finished reading Jean Plaidy’s Rose Without a Thorn, a historical novel about Katherine Howard (5th wife of Henry VIII—beheaded) and I’ve just started Cornelia Funke’s Inkdeath, the 3rd and final novel in her Inkworld trilogy. Inkdeath is going to take me a while to read. It’s 663 pages long and even though it’s a young adult novel the prose is dense and rich like liqueur. Funke’s Inkworld series is all about books and reading. One of the characters, Fenoglio, is an author who is magically transported into his own book. However another character, Orpheus, has the ability to rewrite Fenoglio’s book and alter the reality therein. Fenoglio wonders, “…was there any worse fate than having to watch something else twist your own words, adding colorful touches—in very bad taste—to the world you’d made?” Reading this I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of guilt as a writer of fan fiction. Like Orpheus, I delight in messing about with other people’s imagined worlds and adding lurid elements to their stories. I’ve always considered it quite a creative enterprise however Fenoglio’s dilemma does make me look at it from another perspective. One thing I can take some consolation in is the fact that nothing in the Inkworld series is clean cut. Fenoglio, with his sense of authorship towards the world around him, is a very ambiguous character not nearly so much in control of the world he created as he would like to be. When I finish Inkdeath, I’ve decided that I’m going to reread Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. I read it for the first time back in the fall of 2004 but I really plowed through it, I’d like to go back and do a more leisurely reading taking in more of the details.

Good things post
So that I can get out of the snarky attitude that suddenly hit about an hour ago...
1) Another NaNo down, with the epilogue left to go.
2) wolfish_cat should be back this week. *clings to her*
3) Another season of Merlin is likely.
4) 1/2 of the 2 most stressful holidays is dealt with.
5) All my writing for the next month is done! 5.1) Firefox tabs all cleared away for a new gathering of tabs starting the first 5.2) Reading list - * HD_Holidays * Snapelyholidays * daily_deviant's Kinky Kristmas * lupin_snape's Snupin Santa * Camelot Solstice * Harry_Holidays * HP_Yule_Balls (there are probably more as well, but OMG, isn't that enough?)
11/26/09 08:24 pm
Let's see--
1000 words of NaNo today. I'm at least a day behind as far as wordcount goes. Very frustrating. But I am getting there.
Gaming machine attacked by toxic malware today, so I lost at least an hours worth of time, and had a bit of a fit trying to get the bloody thing *off* my computer. *sighs* Gone, now, but really not a happy thing.
For those of you who have followed my family issues with my mother's side of the family--good thanksgiving this year. There were only eight of us total, so it was nice and quiet, which means no huge blowups.

Random things, and art recs
FACT: When you are used to writing antagonistic pairings, writing friendship pairings is hard. And features way too many OOC fights before the sex. :/
FACT: I heard some old Heart song on... IDK, a bathroom cleaner commercial or something the other day, and now I can't get it out of my head. Also, it has now become the soundtrack for my smutty_claus story. I... don't know if this is a good thing or not.
... but man, those chicks could rock, riiiight? *air guitar*
FACT: The S.O. and I just heroically got out, by exploiting a technicality, of a horrible Thanksgiving dinner we were supposed to go to tomorrow, hosted by the distant relations of a pseudo-acquaintance. Yes! *fist pump* Pyjamas and bacon sandwiches on the couch by ourselves, here we come. Thank God. Americans, I love you and appreciate that you love Thanksgiving so much, but honestly, I usually have better things to do on my birthday or close to than hang out with other people's families who invite the foreigners out of pity. I appreciate the gesture, but, no. Just, no. :)
FACT: Fabulous art recs are fabulous! Before I head back into writing lockdown, here, have some art!
Till Death Do Us Part by Anon at hp_darkfest (Harry/Ginny, Harry/Draco, R: blood, character death [Ginny]) Mind the warnings, please: this is a very dark piece, thematically. It stunned the breath right out of me with its implications. It made me super uncomfortable and want to weep for humanity, in a way, but it's also an astonishing piece, both artistically and conceptually. Very highly recommended, but not easy to take in.
Pensive by stellamoon (Draco, G) Utterly stunning. a;lskdjf. I cannot even put into words how gorgeous and erotic this portrait is.
As You Witch by Anon at radish_love (Harry/Luna, PG) Yeah, ANON. *coughcough* Just about as anon as the first piece up there. :D There is no reason in the universe for this piece not having about 8 times as many comments as it currently does. It's fabulous.
Teddy and Victoire by ericahpfa (both PG) Erica is drawing next-gen portraits!!! *runs around flailing*
"Looking for these, Potter?" by tbranch (Harry/Pansy, R) Because I never, ever get tired of tbranch's Pansy, or Harry/Pansy. *purr*
Lily/Lorcan/Lysander by _aurora_sky_ (NWS LIKE WHOA OKAY. Also, incest) Because this post did not have nearly enough porn in it. :D Well, this isn't just porn. It's actually really gorgeous, with the positioning and the lighting and things like that. *nod* It's also hot like burning, okay, and I don't even care what you think of the next-gen characters or who Lorcan and Lysander are or whatever. HOT LIKE BURNING.
See something you like? Leave a bit of feedback for a talented artist today!

Criminal Minds
About two weeks ago I watched an episode of the television show Criminal Minds for the first time. I usually avoid police procedural show but I was interested because rock star Gavin Rossdale was guest-starring as a sort of strung-out vampire rock star (not that I’m exactly a Gavin Rossdale fan, but I liked him well enough in Constantine). Watching the show I ended up being pretty impressed by androgynous boy genius Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) so yesterday when I saw there were reruns showing on several channels I ended up watching a couple episodes. When not ogling Matthew Gray Gubler’s cheekbones, I was pleased to discover that Mandy Patinkin was on the earlier episodes of the show. I’ve had a thing for Mandy Patinkin for about 20 years—when I was in high school I listened obsessively to his recording of the musical Evita. Patinkin was gone in more recent episodes of the show, but I found myself surprised and unexpectedly pleased by another character, an FBI computer technician called Penelope Garcia (Kristen Vangsness). Now I’ve always loved support staff type characters, from secretaries Marilyn (Northern Exposure) and Elaine (Ally McBeal) to sour techie Chloe (24) but in addition to her behind-the-scenes sort of position the thing about Garcia that really endeared her to me was that she was a female character on a mainstream television show who was not skinny. She was cute and sexy and curvy and plump and voluptuous. I don’t follow a lot of television shows but I honestly can’t think of the last time I saw a not skinny female character. Probably teenaged Sara Rue on Popular (she ended up slimming down for her own show Less Than Perfect). I’ve watched a grand total of 3 ¾ episodes of Criminal Minds, so for all I know Garcia might be a totally stereotypical “overweight” character who does nothing but provide comic relief talk about diets but I don’t think so. It seemed to me like there was some sort of romantic thing going on between her and FBI agent, Morgan, and generally she seemed like someone who was really competent and well regarded by her peers. I’m really curious now to watch more of the show and she how she’s handled. A couple super adorable pics of Kristen Vangsness as Penelope Garcia

Thanksgiving plans and dental visit
Tomorrow my grandmother, parents and I are going to be having Thanksgiving dinner at a neighbor’s house. Given my food issues Thanksgiving is always a little uncomfortable for me but oddly I’m not feeling my usual degree of anxiety this year. I think it helps that I haven’t had to spend the last week dealing with the insanity of holiday crowds at an urban supermarket. Also I don’t have to work on the holiday itself so I’ll have time to relax and do anything I need to do before hand instead of rushing to work at 7:00 a.m. then having to get to a celebration right afterwards like I have the past few years. Yesterday I went to the dentist for the first time in 12 years (I know it’s been 12 years because the last time I went was right before my little brother graduated from college which would make it 1997). It’s almost unforgivably irresponsible to let that much time lapse between dental visits. I have lots of excuses. I hate going to the dentist. Because I was bulimic in high school I had to suffer through some extensive dental work when I was in my late teens and early 20’s. Frankly, it was traumatic. Also I haven’t had dental insurance since 1998 and I don’t like paying out of pocket to be subjected to pain. Before I went for my appointment I was absolutely horrified that my teeth would be in such bad shape I’d need hours of expensive dental work to save them (I have recurring nightmares about losing my teeth). Luckily my teeth were in pretty good shape considering the amount of time it’s been. I’ll need a filling but that’s it. Obviously I’m not looking forward to my follow-up appointment after Christmas but it’s a huge relief to know that my teeth are more or less okay.

Fic: Light as Iron, Singed as Pearl (Harry/Draco, NC-17)
Title: Light as Iron, Singed as Pearl Author: snegurochka_lee Pairing: Harry/Draco Rating: NC-17 Word Count: ~13,800 Warnings: Dom/sub. Bondage. EWE. Summary: The owner of the elite BDSM club M. had not gained his reputation as the most coveted Dominant on the scene by taking on just any riff-raff submissive who asked. It would take an unexpected letter to convince him to accept a new client, but it might turn out to be the biggest mistake he ever made. Notes: Written for hd_career_fair last month for this prompt. "Thank you" does not begin to cover my gratitude to the divine marguerite_26, whose handholding, beta work and modly prodding went well beyond the call of duty. When I was tempted to make Harry Minister for Magic, she also gets the credit for very wisely suggesting the position he has here instead. Thank you also to everyone who read, commented on, and recc'ed it at the fest. ♥ ! Originally posted anonymously here, where you can still read it in one file, if you prefer.

*facepalm*
So apparently my mother's side of the family - the only family I've been in contact with these past two years - is falling apart as we speak. I don't mind so much because of Things I will summarise behind the cut, but my mother minds very much, which is why I'm very very angry about this.
( tl;dr about Jules' family which you might or might not want to know - touches some sensitive stuff )
I'm thinking it's getting clear why I'm not so hot on the family stuff.
Now this feels a bit better. A tiny, tiny bit.

Links
Right, links! Have I got a collection for you!
First off, the best thing I've seen all week: Rings Around The World, or The Rings of Earth, a short video on what the Earth would look like if it had rings. It's really good! If we all write in to Barack Obama, do you reckon he'll blow up the moon for us so we can have some rings?
Talking of lobbying, the UK Government is thinking of introducing proposals to cut off accused filesharers without warning or indeed anything approaching due process of law. If you think that's a bad idea, sign this petition! (UK residents/citizens only.)
Meanwhile, over in Minneapolis, you can if you wish go and see A Christmas Carol in Klingon. If I lived there, I'd be almost tempted. :)
This post gets worse, I'm afraid. Much worse. First of all, there is The Meow Mix, which will put the fear of Bast into you for life.
Next, the 30 Most Disturbing Twilight Products. I don't know whether my favourites are the sparkly dildo, the Edward Cullen silhouette wall decal, or Bella's uterus (don't ask).
And finally, awesome multi-fandom sparkly news. For next year's Simpsons Halloween special, they plan to have Lisa fall in love with a vampire who sparkles. As if that wasn't funny enough, the vampire is voiced by none other than... Daniel Radcliffe.
Told you it was awesome. :)

Lockdown, and Lee finally figures out what LDWS stands for...
Urf. I am in writing lockdown until smutty_claus is done, because *draws hearts around story* but also *stabs it with a fork* a;slkjdfs.
But! Had to reappear for a moment to point out that the first-ever Harry/Scorpius Last Drabble Writer Standing competition at harryscorp100 just started. Yes, I have a soft spot for Harry/Scorpius, although no, I'm not in this competition. Just an interested observer. I only recently figured out a.) what LDWS things are, and b.) how they work, so now I want everyone to do them. :)
So, there are 15 writers in it, and each week they get a prompt, and then they write a drabble (defined here as under 500 words or so, I think or, in any case, not 100 on the dot), send it in, and they are all posted anonymously mid-week. Then readers vote for their favourite, reveals happen on Sunday, and a new weekly round begins, with one less person. Fifteen weeks later, we have a winner. Fun, yes?
Maybe I'm just addicted to reality TV shows wherein voting for favourites occurs? Hm.
Anyway, I point out this week's Week One drabbles because they are all super good. The first prompt was 'Age Disparity,' so all entries have something to do with the age difference. Scorpius is underage in some but not in others, so read the warnings and go with whatever floats your boat. I had a great time over coffee the other day reading through them and trying to decide on a favourite. No, I'm not always in favour of competitive stuff in fandom, and yeah, it sucks that someone has to be eliminated every week, but hopefully all the participants are okay with that and know not to take it personally. Anyway, if it appeals to you, go have a read through over there and vote!
In other news, I just read through a super awesome story for snupin_santa this morning that made me fall in love with Snupin all over again. Swoon!
*runs back to smutty_claus* Hope all your holiday fest stuff is in and you lot are having a relaxing weekend!

who wants to share writerly squee with me?
After months and months of not touching the keyboard, thanks to mini_nanowrimo, I'm back to writing daily. Each day in November (so far), I've managed to write at least 100 words. Go me!
But that's not the object of this post.
I've been thinking about what to do when Mini Nano is over. How to kick my butt and stay with the writing daily? And I've come up with an idea:
Is there anyone who'd like to open up a writer's group, so to speak (via email or whatever), where we can report our word counts, keep each other on track, and squee about our writing? I was thinking maybe we could give out prompts if someone fails their target or some such. What do you think, anybody for it? *puppy eyes*

thankful for unemployment?
I went to the supermarket yesterday. There were fairly long lines with the pre-Thanksgiving crowd and the cashiers were hauling whole turkeys over the scanners. I was very grateful not to be working in a supermarket anymore. In fact, the market was always open on Thanksgiving and I started working there in September of 2006 so this is going to be the first Thanksgiving since 2005 where I won’t have to go to work.
