| It didn't feel quite real, to Kingsley, and he thought to himself that it never would. How could it when there was no closure, when they still had no clue what had happened to Gina Smythe? She had simply disappeared one day and there had been no word since for over a month. A million scenarios had run through his mind every day since he had realised she was gone, from her simply skipping town (which he knew she wouldn't do) to any number of gruesome deaths at the hands of a death eater. There was a chance, still, that she could come back, but Kingsley knew it was near the same chance of him winning the lottery. It had been too long - there was little hope left. He regretted every moment that he had not realised she was gone sooner, and, looking down at his hands, tried to fight back a tear. Kingsley cleared his throat, not yet wanting to begin but knowing he could not stall any longer. "We should start now," he whispered to Mr. Smythe, Gina's father. He glanced at the pictures of Gina - there were only a few, but they ranged throughout Gina's life since her mother had a small photo album with her. He kept his eyes trained on the photographs as he half-listened to the words Gina's family was saying; he knew if he wasn't careful he would lose it and that was something he definitely didn't want to do. When the last of Gina's siblings had finished speaking, it was Kingsley's turn. "In the grand scheme of things," he said carefully, holding in his emotions, "I guess I haven't really known Gina that long. I got partnered up with her when her last partner retired and I really wasn't sure how we'd get along. We're pretty different, if you hadn't noticed, and I thought she'd be a stick in the mud at first, but we figured each other out pretty quickly and," he shrugged, "it just worked. She-" he stopped, feeling awkward and unsure. "Don't really know how to say it, but she meant a lot to me." He closed his eyes briefly, one small tear sliding down his eye. "She's become one with the Force now." |
