Wystan and Eoin
Wystan's Chambers, the Palace
Early Afternoon
Cousins greet one another
It was all handled so cleanly. With no fuss or to-do, Eoin would simply not return to the assembly and in his place his dear cousin would take the empty chair and work in the assembly would go on as if nothing had changed. Or at least that was how it had been explained to him in the letters he had exchanged with his parents. His thoughts had been directed at finding a place for himself and Sidonie where they could take the time to truly get to know one another and decide if marriage was in their best interests. He hadn't thought about the loss of his political work much but now that he was being replaced, and that the letters from his parents seemed to grow colder, but he was beginning to feel the loss now. First he had given up his position in military intelligence in part because he had lost Azyebel, now he was giving up his position in government because he had apparently won the heart of the former Queen.
It didn't feel much like winning to him. Not that he didn't have feelings for the woman, but he wouldn't say that he felt triumphant or victorious. It was a strange feeling as he had done everything exactly as it had been asked of him. It wasn't the first time he had been seemingly punished for doing what was expected of him, but this would be the one that stuck with him.
He had been informed as soon as his cousin had arrived but he had taken his time before he came to visit. The short walk taking almost double the time it should have, he did eventually make it to Wystan's assigned chambers and even then he didn't seek the man out directly. As care-free as he would have liked to be the goings on as of late returned him to that over-analyzing that had gotten him in the trouble in the army. He was back to thinking five and ten steps ahead of everything, and while Wystan was a man he knew he could trust Eoin was still planning out ways to get around him or use him should he have to. Friends and family were important ties to hang on to, even if he was essentially out of the game for now.
At least he had been wise in his choice of replacement, he tried to tell himself as he walked around the trunks in Wystan's sitting room, eyes not lingering long over the other man's possessions. His cousin was a hard worker, followed the rules but wasn't rigid in his thinking, he could be reasoned with and shared many of his opinions when it came to humans, though Eoin tended to be far more pragmatic. Calambria representation would be in good hands, he knew that, but that it not make it any easier to let go. Now he would have to find new ways to fill the hours, new work as even if Sidonie hadn't shown an interest he would be leaving. He couldn't be so close to Azyebel, not again. He only hoped she would be able to resist his cousin as well as she seemed to have done while they were still engaged.
Passing by one trunk he spotted his cousin's violin and went over to it. They both played the instrument, and while he still picked it up occasionally, Eoin didn't have the passion for it that Wystan had. Music had required practice and Eoin had been the sort of boy who lost interest and patience in anything he wasn't naturally talented in or that he had to work at. He plucked one of the strings on the beautiful instrument, but frowned a little upon hearing the wrong note. He picked the thing up and was tuning and plucking it when he felt eyes on him, causing him to glance up and offer his older cousin a warm smile, "Wystan, good to see you. Your notes are off, temperature shift most likely, it always does that to strings."
