And we walked off to look for America. (Open to all!)
Holidays (barring disasters) were always a fun time at Xavier's. Maybe it was because so many of them didn't have homes to leave to, and the school wanted to really make itself into a new home for all of them. A place where they could have family and friends, if they didn't have any family and friends left on the outside. There was that need to look after ones own, to be protective and supportive and encouraging, and so the faculty and staff always strove to make holiday celebrations large and welcoming. Today was no different.

The back of the mansion had been decorated with streamers, balloons, and confetti, and of course the appropriate miniature flags were all around (and in the front a well). The pool had -- through use of someone's mutation -- been transformed to look like the water was colored to resemble a flag. There wasn't any dye in it though, so swimming left you perfectly safe and the same color as you were upon jumping in. A few grills were set up, cooking burgers, hot dogs, chicken, ribs and even tofu and other vegetarian options for those that wanted it. Long picnic tables were set up to eat at, each adorned with punch bowls and bowls of various chips, salads, and desserts.

Jubilee wasn't there to provide the fireworks and so various kinds had been bought instead, to be set off when the evening arrived. Until then, there were sparklers for everyone to enjoy.

((Open to all! Feel free to set your tags at any point, if you want it during the day or in the evening for the fireworks, etc))

So everybody loves a barbecue and vegetarians were apparently no different. Which was why Silas had managed to find himself in charge of grilling the veggie food -burgers and hot dogs and even a few things that probably shouldn't be cooked that way- and had set up shop next to the meat one. Every so often he tried to lure people over with the promise of extra ketchup or double the cheese on their burgers but sadly it didn't seem to be working. But that was okay because he was having a good time anyway. Decked out in a Kiss The Cook apron, sunglasses and a pair of cargo pants, he was having a surprisingly relaxing 4th of July. So far nobody had cried, nobody had drowned in the pool (he'd made sure to appoint the necessary lifeguards to prevent that) and he'd learned from his previous mistakes not to give the kids anything sharper than butter knives for their rolls.

All in all, it was probably the nicest day he'd had at Xaviers in a long time.

Did someone say veggie burgers? Awww, yeah! Being in charge of the vegetarian portion of the food selection means that Silas is officially Matt’s favorite person right now. Being one of the resident herbivores, you would think helping organize that might be on Matt’s to do list at some point. But anything involving him having to cook or help cook anything that was for the consumption of someone besides him did not turn out very well. It’s a fully admitted fact that Matt’s pretty much useless in a kitchen or around a grill and would probably starve to death if he was ever anywhere he didn’t have access to a microwave.

And ooh, actual fireworks! Even if it was a reminder of the absence of someone who’d been a good friend to him, it did amp up the geek in Matt just a little. He’d used firework powder to get part of the boom for his paint bombs, so he’d gained a new respect for fireworks during that little project. Already he was having thoughts of putting several of those sparklers and other fireworks together to make one big zeppelin explosion of color. At least he has enough sense to stay away from the fireworks for use in any side projects. Because today wasn’t about any of that, it was about the holiday and everyone slowing down and calming down for just a little bit so that everyone could enjoy it. Currently for Matt that enjoyment was wrapped up in the soda that was occupying one of his hands and the rapidly disappearing veggie dog that was in the other. Om nom nom nom. Everything really does taste better grilled. Putting his chowing down on pause, Matt threw a wide smile in Silas’ direction as he walked over. “Awesome job on the veggie stuff!” He is seriously going to be one of those that stuffs their faces for a while today.

Given that this was Kitty's first holiday back at Xavier's, there was no way she would let something so important slide by without taking part. She wasn't about to go full-out with an American flag bikini or cart out a big old bald eagle beach towel, but her UChicago shorts and tank-top were shed pretty quickly when she reached the side of the pool in favor of her yellow and black two-piece. She'd sat outside sunning herself by the pool before and stuck her legs in, but she hadn't hauled out the bathing suit until now, and she had a lot of pasty white skin to expose. It wasn't about to stop her!

Swimming first, eating later. The smell of grilling food was alluring, but the idea of jumping into a pool with a belly full of hot dogs and hamburgers was unpleasant enough that she did her best to ignore the cook-out for the time being. Instead, Kitty was doing her favorite pool stunt: cannonballs through swimmers, through floaty chairs, and through the bottom of the pool itself. When she went intangible, the momentum of her jump carried her unchecked through the tiles thanks to the lack of friction generated by the water around her, and Kitty's little brown head and tucked knees disappeared again and again down beneath the pool. When she popped up through the water again, it was generally with a big gasp of air and a huge grin. She couldn't really do that at a public pool back home, or at the gym on university campus. It was hardly against the rules, but there, it would cause confusion or panic, while here, her phasing barely raised an eyebrow. She felt like she was really among the right people again. Back where she belonged, safe for the time being, and happy. Best feeling ever.
