Severus smirked. "Not as close as you might think. Pansy was quite inebriated by the time she ran into Jack. She could barely stand up straight and was concentrating more on Harry's deficiencies than on me."
He had to concede that point and he hoped it would be enough to keep Narcissa in check. He could view anything happening to him with a certain equanimity but if Faustus was harmed in any way, there would not be a place in the world that was safe for her to hide and he would exact the price of his son's injuries from her skin.
He was about to reply to Draco's comment about Scorpius when they walked into the room and found Narcissa also there. Severus tensed and his expression became utterly blank. That lasted only until Faustus came running over and threw himself at Severus with a delighted "Dad!"
Severus' expression softened and he returned the embrace that he was still, in truth, getting used to. His son was a far more tactile person than he was but he refused to see that hurt expression on Faustus' face when he refused to touch him.
Faustus stayed next to him, leaning against him with a smile on his face, and Severus wrapped an arm around his shoulders. He then looked over at Narcissa and gave her a small nod of greeting. "I am well, Narcissa," he said blandly. "I trust being a grandmother agrees with you?"
