Gabrielle tried her best to stop crying. Dennis was doing all he could to calm her, and she was unable to get past what he had now become, even though she had known him before. She felt guilty, and forced herself to stop thinking about escape for a few moments.
"I am sorry," she said quietly. "Thees eez... so terrible..." she could feel the hot tears already returning, this time not from fear, but from sorrow. "We can zink of somezing, oui? Eet... eet cannot be all ze time, and you must promise to try and make eet bettair wiz your bruzzer. Zat would be best."
When he recognized Jander, the girl became confused. "Jand-air, 'e deed not seem to know anybody at all. 'E eez not from around 'ere, so 'ow do you know ze man?" Her eyes widened. "'E could 'elp you, no?"
