"Nicholas was a fool in many ways," Rodolphus said calmly. "He could have had the loyalty and love of his son but instead chose to lose both."
Nicholas had been a friend but Rodolphus had never been blind to the man's faults. And the way he had treated his son had been one of them. He had not set out to win Theodore's loyalty and love, it had happened simply because he took his role as godfather with the seriousness it should be treated. Theodore had been looking for a father-figure in the absence of the one he should have had.
He chuckled though the sound had no mirth in it. "I have been contemplating who the mother might be but I have no answers as yet. Still the boy bears Severus' surname so there must be legal papers somewhere, even if only a birth certificate. I am intrigued enough to set some of my people to finding that information out."
He took a sip of his cognac. "Ah, now there is the most pertinent question. I believe Severus has anticipated our interest in it too. He keeps his son at Hogwarts. The boy's name is Faustus, by the way. His mother had quite the sharp sense of humour. I applaud her for that. But I digress. Severus keeps his son close to him. He is not being educated at the school in Hogsmeade but instead is being tutored by Stephen Cornfoot. Getting our hands on the boy would require somehow gaining access to Hogwarts. Either that or finding where Severus takes the boy when they are not at the school and hoping that it is a place where we may move freely."
