Bat: Theodore Nott
Date: 14 October 2006
Characters: Jander Mulboon, Theodore Nott
Location: Around
Private/Public: Private
Rating: PG
Warnings: None unless Rodolphus' smugness counts
Summary: Jander tells Theo the deed is done

The night air didn't feel crisp against his skin, as it did all those years ago.  Tonight, like all nights since his siring, the air felt just like the air - his body adapted to the temperature.  When he was about two hours from Hogsmeade, Jander sent a message to Theo to tell him of his impending arrival.

Mr. Nott,

See me at your Hogsmeade house in two hours.  I will deliver proof of the Lestrange brat's death then.

-Jander

Theo was sitting the rooms Draco had arranged for him at Malfoy manor, trying to focus on the book he was reading while casting an eye on Nathaniel from time to time. The boy had recovered completely from the attack, and no longer cried for his mother as often, or maybe not at all. Maybe it was only his own hope that a memory of Padma would linger with her son?

He was just turning the page in the book when he heard the scratching on the window, and he was there to open to the bat a moment later. He never hesitated, calling out to Mimsy to take care of Nathaniel just before he rushed to the desk in the corner and took out one of the portkeys he'd prepared just in case he'd need them.

Taking it in his hand, he activated it, finding himself in the house in Hogsmeade once more. He didn't sit down to wait, couldn't, instead he paced the room, wishing Jander would get there with the proof sooner rather than later.

Jander tried to hide his jubilant smirk, but he was sure it wasn't well enough hidden. It was hard for him to resist skipping through the alleys of Hogsmeade.

When he came to Nott's door, he politely knocked and waited to be bid entrance, meanwhile he stood there with the head of Lisa Lestrange in his backpack.

Theo was not late in answering the door when he heard it, not bothering with elves or anything else of the kind. If Lisa was dead he wanted the proof - sooner rather than later.

'Come on inside, you know the way,' he said gesturing toward the back sitting room.

Jander nodded to the wizard as he gestured toward the back sitting room.

As Jander walked, he surveyed the house, trying to get a feel for its defenses, in case the worst happened. Of course, he was sure Nott would have wards ready to raise against him if it came to that.

As they entered, Jander led them over to a nearby table, where in one foul swoop he opened the backpack, plucked out Lisa's head, which was covered in dried blood, and plopped it on the table just in front of Theo's face.

"I assume this is proof enough," he said as his voice was full of pride.

Theo had barely entered the room when he was suddenly confronted with Lisa's severed head. Shock, disgust and nausea all washed over him and for a moment he actually thought he might throw up.

He turned in disgust, taking several deep breaths to calm his stomach, wishing he hadn't manage to eat earlier. Once gathered, he nodded, though he did not look back at the head.

'You never did mention a price,' he said instead, his eyes fixed at Jander to avoid the gruesome sight. For a moment he wondered if he shouldn't feel more pleased, yet all he felt was empty. Knowing she was dead didn't help the pain at all. Not that he regretted the move, he was glad she was dead, but he had expected it to help more.

Once Theo's back had turned to him, Jander smiled sadistically. His assumption had been borne out: Nott didn't have the stomach for this. He was just another schemer and planner who had other people do the work he couldn't do himself.

Jander's face had returned to its usual smugness by the time Theo had turned back around.

"This was no ordinary favor, Mr. Nott, as you know. I took great personal risk," he spoke while twirling Lisa's wands in his fingers, waiting to see if Nott would ask for it. "And incurred quite a few wounds that will never heal. Part," he emphasized, "of my payment will be unlimited access to the library at your mansion. The rest of my payment will come in due time."

He spoke in an authoritative tone, not that he had any delusion that he could intimidate Theo, but simply so the wizard would know he was being taken serious.

Theo listened, but in a way he didn't hear, most of all he didn't really care. It was if the hatred had drained from him when he was confronted with Lisa's face. It was somehow over - and yet it wasn't. He knew he was now a greater target than before. Rodolphus was not a fool - he'd know who was behind this.

'Fine,' he said at Jander's demand. 'The manor is empty at the moment, the house elves will let you in.' He did not care to negotiate, the day he'd move back in felt remote and far away, and even if things changed, he could live with the vampire reading through his books at night. It was a small price to pay - he'd just ward the rest of the manor against him to protect Nathaniel.

'I can't do anything about the scrolls,' he added, moving to sit down. 'The magic in those are beyond my control, you'll have to convince the painting to let you view them or touching them will severely hurt you.' He looked at Jander again, his eyes darting to his hands when he spoke of the scrolls.

'Is that her wand?' he then asked, as if seeing the wand for the first time.

Jander almost felt sorry for the man. He couldn't enjoy the death of the bitch that had killed his witch. Hey that rhymes! What sorry state a man must be in not to enjoy revenge, especially revenge as sweet as this.

"Very well," he nodded as Theo explained about the house and scrolls. "I shall convince them to give me access. I am quite persuasive."

Jander looked down at the wand he had been absent-mindedly twirling. "Yes, yes it is."

Theo doubted very much that Jander would have any kind of success persuading uncle Nathaniel about the scrolls, though he didn't say as much. Instead he focused on the wand.

'Do you mind?' he asked, knowing - or at least believing himself to know - that Jander couldn't have any use for it.

Jander looked at the man then at the wand then back again, but kept twirling it.

"Why do you want?"

Theo didn't have the energy for this, he wanted the wand, he wanted to feel that she was actually dead. It meant more than any head he could barely stand to look at would. Yet he didn't feel like explaining himself to Jander. It was none of his business.

He had a feeling that saying that would cost him though, so he kept his mouth shut. 'Because I'd like the satisfaction of knowing that I have the her wand,' he said calmly instead. He still wasn't sure what he would do when he got it. Snap it in two? See if he could use it? Probably not he would not be the owner - but at least he'd have a trophy that he could stand to see.

Jander squinted his eyes and stared at the man. How far was he willing to push Nott? Should he acquiesce? Was there really more he wanted from Nott? Was risking access to the library worth keeping this trophy? Jander did like trophies, quite a bit. And he had taken only Lisa's head - which made for a lousy trophy - and her wand.

Jander didn't answer, but instead put distance between the two as he started to leisurely pace back and forth.

Theo was normally a patient man, or at least he liked to think so, but Jander was stretching that patience very very thin and Theo clenched his fist to keep calm as he watched the man.

'Do feel free to speak out loud' he said watching the man.

Jander sighed and just slightly shook his head.

"The deal was I kill Lisa and bring you proof. I have done that," he gestured to the severed head on the table with the wand that he couldn't use.

"This," he waved the wand erratically. "Was not part of the deal. So it stays with me."

Theo wanted to hex the man. Maybe that would make him feel better about this, though he of course kept in check and did no such thing. Jander had done what he'd asked, and for killing Lisa he did deserve some...respect.

Taking a deep breath, Theo concentrated on his nails digging into the palms of his hands, counting to ten.

'You have no use for it,' he pointed out calmly. 'If you want some compensation, I can easily arrange for it. Name your sum.'

Jander watched in almost amazement as Theo's anger increased. He didn't think human reaction could surprise him any more. But he was wrong.

"My dear Mr. Nott, it is simply a wand, a wand you cannot use, for you are not its owner," he smiled. "But to me it is something far much more. It is the only trophy I have of an impressive kill. The price would be most expensive."

His nails were beginning to make nice marks in the inside of his palms, but he kept his voice calm as he spoke.

'Money is no object, I have enough of it. The wand that killed my wife, however,' he paused. 'I would take quite some pleasure in destroying it.'

After several moments of stony silence and staring at Theo, Jander finally decided the wand wasn't worth the fight. He'd just have to go back to the Lestrange residence and find something of better value.

"Very well," he tossed the wand at Nott. "We'll negotiate a price later. I must leave now to beat the sun."

Theo's reactions were quick though not quick enough to catch the wand at the speed Jander tossed it. Picking it up from his lap he held it in his hand for a while, then nodded.

'As I said, money is no object. I'll let you be on your way.' He didn't look at the head, half hoping Jander would take it with him. If not he'd have the elves remove it. The wand, however, he'd keep for now, and once he was alone, he'd snap it in two.
