RP: I know it's not what you want...
Date: September 15, 2006
Characters: Cass, Marietta, Aiden, Percy
Location: Marietta's house, then Percy and Cass's home
Private/Public: Private
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Summary: A nervous Cass goes to pick up an even more nervous (and rather angry) Aiden to take him home.

He'd stood outside the door for minutes, before collecting himself enough to knock. He was nervous, or rather terrified, of what was to come once he did. A child – his child – responsibilities and a possibility of failing. No matter what Percy said he wasn't sure he was cut out for this. He did know he couldn't leave Aiden with Marietta though; he would never be able to forgive himself if he did.

Cursing Lestrange, and wishing his mum was around to help, he gathered up the courage Percy claimed he had and knocked, waiting for the answer. This time things were different. Marietta knew he was here to collect Aiden, Aiden would know the same. Everything was different.

Was it strange that he was nervous?

'But why, mum?'

The stubborn voice filtered through the door even as it opened, but Marietta simply hushed over her shoulder before smiling at Cass. It was obvious the boy behind her was not pleased, but then would any child be? Cass sighed internally, nodding curtly at Marietta, greeting her as he stepped in. It didn't take him a second to notice the boy.

Aiden stood in the middle of the living room, his expression at once curious and stubborn, a look of displeasure on his face as he'd tilted his head and looked at Cass. The way he held his jaw reminded Cass of his mother, but when he looked past that, and past the Weasley red hair and freckles, he thought he was able to see some of himself in Aiden's eyes.

'Hey there,' he said softly, crouching down to Aiden's level. 'You must be Aiden.'

'I am,' the boy answered formally, still looking at him. 'And you're supposed to be my father,' he said. 'But I don't look like you,' he then pointed out, his voice very to the point and matter of fact. Cass smiled. Aiden's voice and stance reminded him of Percy somehow. That could never be a bad thing as far as he concerned.

'Do you want us to find out for sure?' he suggested to the boy, who eyed him a bit longer, glancing over at his mother, then nodded. Well that part was easier than he'd expected. He took out his wand, noticing the way the child's attention seemed diverted for a moment. He let him have a look, then explained the spell he was going to cast and how it would look if he was or was not his father. Aiden seemed to understand and nodded, almost as if giving him permission to cast the spell. His arms were still crossed over his chest, and he was still hesitant, but as the spell was cast there was no doubt on the matter. Aiden was beyond the shadow of a doubt his flesh and blood.

Cass put the wand away, wondering what to do next. This part was the easy part he all of a sudden realised; now he had to get to the point where Aiden went with him. Preferably without too much drama.

'You're here to take me away,' Aiden said plainly, catching him in his doubt. Cass nodded, a bit surprised, and still not sure of where to go from here.

'Your mother thought it would be better if you lived with me,' he said, fighting not to add that she was a selfish bitch that should think more of him than herself. That wouldn't help anything at all.

'She's wrong,' Aiden said sourly, glaring at his mother. 'I want to live with mum.'

Cass sighed, looking at Marietta himself, but she did not intervene to help him, instead she crossed her arms over her chest. 'Don't be difficult, Aiden, we've talked about this.' Cass got the idea that the "talk" had consisted mostly of Marietta telling the boy how things were and nor allowing him to disagree, but he didn't say anything about that, instead he turned to Aiden again. He hesitated for a moment, not sure what to say that didn't sound like fake – or as an attack on Marietta.

'I understand that this is strange and new. It is for me too,' he said, trying to think of everything Percy had said. In his mind he could hear his voice, We need to make sure he'll feel wanted. He cleared his throat. 'I would want to get to know you better, Aiden,' he tried, not sure how to go on.

'You can come to visit. Mum came to visit when I lived with Nana.'

Cass wasn't sure what to say to that, because in a normal situation that would be the most logical. It would be what was right. Now though, nothing was normal.

'Aiden, don't be silly! You don't want your daddy to think you're a bad boy,' Marietta snapped, and Cass could have hexed her for less. Aiden though seemed to focus on something else than what she said.

'Do I have to call you daddy?' he asked, tilting his head again.

Cass shook his head. 'You can call me whatever you want, Aiden, that's not important. We can figure that out together. But right now, I need to bring you with me. Someone I like very much is waiting for us and he really wants to meet you.'

Aiden hesitated, seemingly pulled between curiosity and suspicion. 'What's his name?' he finally asked.

'Percy,' Cass answered honestly. 'I need to talk to your mother for a few minutes. Do you think you could go and get your bag while we talk?'

The boy hesitated, torn, but as he looked to protest, he glanced at his mother and sighed, shrugging his shoulders as he headed upstairs. Cass got up, glaring at Marietta even as he sat up privacy spells. The following conversation was short, to the point and spent, by Cass, largely trying to avoid wanting to hex Marietta.

As expected she did not react well to the news of his mother, though what she seemed most upset at was the news that Cass didn't have a knut to his name. She accused him of lying (which he admittedly had) and stringing her along and she wasn't pleased when he reacted by laughing in her face. Knowing that Aiden would come down at any moment though, forced Cass to keep it short and he interrupted her before she could go too far.

'If you care to visit write in advance,' he said simply, turning his back on her and removing the spell. She huffed but called out and a moment later Aiden lugged a bag too large for him down the stairs. Cass took the steps two at the time and grabbed the bag from him.

'Have you ever used a portkey?' he asked Aiden. The boy nodded firmly, a hint of pride in his stance. 'So then you know how it works. Just hold on tightly to this,' he said, holding out an old broken wristwatch, though at the last moment Cass placed his arm around Aiden as well. They were all set to go when he suddenly tore away, running up to his mother and hugging her legs. Cass didn't say anything, but walked down the stairs and waited for him to say goodbye to Marietta. He left her with a stubborn 'you're not being a good mummy because then you'd let me stay!' something Cass could hardly argue with.

Once more he placed his arm around the child and handed him the portkey, holding onto him tightly until they landed in the yard outside the house.

'So, should be go inside and meet Percy?' he asked, getting the door and holding it up for Aiden.

Percy had been wondering if Cass would come back with Aiden. No matter what Cass said, he thought that it would be safer if Lestrange didn't know that the boy was his son, and hoped that maybe she'd change her mind when she found out.

That was dispelled the moment Cass opened the door, and Plato started barking, and it was different from his usual greeting. "It's okay, boy," Percy said. "Quiet now." He cast a spell to create an invisible barrier so Plato wouldn't run and overwhelm Aiden.

He walked to the hallway, and he smiled at Cass, wanting him to know that he wouldn't do this alone and then he looked at the boy. Good thing he had been partially prepared thanks to the picture, but that red was so much like his own. "Jesus," he murmured, before shaking his head and stepping forward. "Hi, Aiden, I'm Percy Weasley," he said, stretching his hand toward the boy. "Welcome."

Aiden jumped at the sound of barking, and looked up at Cass with surprise. Was the Percy he'd mentioned a dog? And was the dog Cass's? Nana had never let him have a pet. She didn't like them.

He was just about to ask, when he heard a voice, and he tilted his head as he looked towards the door seeing a man come out and start speaking. At first he didn't know what to say, instead he rubbed his eyes. The man in front of him had just as red hair as he did!

He was so surprised that he barely managed to remember his manners, he just looked at the man until Cass nudged him forwards toward this Percy. Then he remembered and stretched out his own hand. He didn't say thank you or hello though, just the first thing that came to his mind.

'You have red hair just like me!'

Percy laughed. "Yes, I've noticed, freckles too." He hitched his robe and crouched in front of Aiden. "I've got five brothers and one sister all with very red hair and freckles. My family is sort of recognised for that."

He turned his head toward the living room. "That, in there, is Plato. He's barking because he wants to meet you, but I cast a spell so he doesn't come barging in. Your dad also has a cat, Sabina. She's somewhere; she'll come out when she's good and ready. Do you want to meet Plato first or would you like your room?"

Adien's eyes were quite big as he examined the man in front of them. In fact he was so surprised - and curious - that he nearly forgot being angry at mum and the other man - Cass - for making him live here.

'Mum have red hair too,' Aiden said, though he couldn't match brothers and a sister. He didn't have either. 'But hers is darker, and she doesn't have freckles though Nana said she used to when she was little but not as much as me.'

Something bothered him though, and he frowned as he looked from Percy to Cass then back again. 'If he is my dad, why do I look more like you?' he asked, tilting his head again, though the thought was gone almost as soon as it was there when Percy mentioned the dog.

'You have two pets??' he asked wideeyed. 'Nana didn't even let me have one! She only had this boring old owl that was no fun at all. It bit me once.'

"Has. Mum has red hair." The correction came naturally, because to do otherwise was to insult the boy's intelligence and Percy wouldn't do that. He didn't add that freckles increased with age and only glamours made them disappear. Aiden could learn about women's vanity later on.

"I'm sure your mother's hair looks real nice. This," he said pointing to his own. "People often call it Weasley red. We pretty much all have it."

Percy laughed again. "Yes, that might seem strange, but it's actually quite normal. Your mum has red hair and your dad has blond hair so when you mix the colours, you get a lighter red, like mine. We can try with crayons and you'll see."

He looked up at Cass smiling. "Your dad and I have an owl too, but Hermes doesn't bite, not unless you hurt him. Does that mean that you want to meet Plato?"

"I always wanted a dog when I was little. Mum didn't want to because there were too many of us around. Plato causes less damage than the twins ever did, and he's good. They'll have fun together," Percy said.

He shook his head. "No, he doesn't, which is good for us. If we're lucky, he'll like books too. You can read to him, teach him. It'll give you a chance to get close to him, and if you don't want to, we'll find another way."

Cass hadn't known that, and he smiled as he looked at Percy. For a moment he pondered if kissing your lover in front of a child was a good or bad idea, but he decided that now was not the time to find out. They'd discuss that later, when Aiden was asleep and they were alone. 'I'm sure they will,' he said instead, smirking to himself.

As Percy went on, he shrugged, looking over at Aiden. 'I can read to him. We both can. Though when it comes to the teaching part I think you'll be the better one, unless it's flying, defence or transfiguration.' He pondered things for a moment. 'Charms would work too. It was always the sitting down and study subjects I had a problem with.'

He smirked. 'I never had the patience to sit down long enough to learn. I was dismal in Ancient Runes.'

Percy opened his mouth, then closed it again. He thought he was bad with children, but obviously Cass was on a different planet when it came to them.

"Cass, do you know how old he is?" he finally asked, knowing full well that Cass knew. "He's not going to Hogwarts, and he's not going to learn defence or transfiguration or any of that. Besides, the little fact that it's illegal, he's too young to focus his magic with any degree of accuracy, and that's if he even has developed his magic yet," Percy pointed out.

"I meant things like English, and math, and geography, and you know the basic that any child should know," he finished, trying not to laugh.

Cass listened, feeling a bit stupid. 'Oh.' He paused looking at Aiden. 'I started learning magic in that age.' Well some. Not much granted but he had held in a wand and cast a spell or three, he was sure of it. He distinctly remembered his father teaching him.

Or had he been older? Suddenly he couldn't be sure any more.

'I can still teach him how to fly though, right?' he asked. He was sure Miles had mentioned flying with Liam and getting him a broom. He'd ask him. Just to be sure that he'd got that right. He couldn't honestly say he usually paid much attention to what went on with his friends' kids.

"Cass, I will help, and I'll do everything I can for him and you, but he is your son. You need to take responsibility for him. I know it's not something you want to or even enjoy to do, but you need to." He wasn't sure if it helped Aiden or Cass more.

"I'm not going anywhere, Cass, but we will disagree. We have very different ideas about too many things, and one person will need to have the final say. You get that honour," he said, knowing that it wasn't an honour but a burden.

'I wasn't saying I'm not going to take responsibility for him, all I'm saying is that we need to work together on this. We disagree on other things and we always come to a conclusion together. I don't see why this would be different than everything else.'

He looked over at the boy. 'I admit I don't know the first thing about what I need to do here, but I do know one thing. If we disagree he's going to take advantage of it, that's what I always did when mum and dad weren't agreeing on something. Same thing when teachers didn't agree, you went with asking the one you knew was going to give me what I wanted.'

He might not know much about kids, but he did know typical Slytherin behaviour, and he didn't think his son would spared from it. He seemed to have strong opinions of his own already.

'We can disagree in private, and we'll talk and discuss until we come up with something we can both live with.'

"Do you really need to ask? Cass, when exactly do I do anything publicly?" Percy asked with a small smile. "Of course, we'll do in private." He just didn't think it mattered in the end, because it wasn't in his place to decide how Aiden should grow up.

"Still, there is a difference. He's yours, Cass. You can't get around that." He wasn't sad or upset about it. It was just a simple fact.

'I know he's mine, but that doesn't change the fact that he's living with us, the both of us. He needs to learn to listen to you as much as to me.'

'Percy, think about it. He's going to grow up with the both of us there, equally so, which means he's going to depend on the both of us too. Anything else...it's irrelevant. We're what matters.'

'We're the family, you, me and Aiden, the three of us.' Even if that thought scared the shit out of him. Still, he needed to get used to the thought of there being more than Percy to his family, and saying it helped.

Percy looked over at Cass, wondering if that was the best thing to do. Kids were mighty resourceful, and if Aiden went to school, he'd hear things. Getting caught in a lie wouldn't do any of them any good.

"Sure, let's go," he said. "Plato can show you the way. Up the stairs." He held back making sure that both boy and dog were already running. "You need to tell him what happened before someone else does," he whispered. "Don't lie to him or he won't trust you."

Cass frowned, not sure he agreed, but then Percy did have a point. In this case too many people knew - though he hoped they wouldn't be stupid enough to tell a six year old.

'How?' he asked. 'How do I tell him without scaring the living daylight out of him?'

"In simple terms, Cass. He must know something, children pick up things. I remember listening to my parents, and I always knew what was going on at Hogwarts through them, even before I was old enough to attend," Percy said.

"Tell him that you worked for the Aurors, and there are bad wizards that tried to hurt you, and you almost died. Those are all concepts he would understand," he pointed out.

He still wasn't completely convinced that it wouldn't scare Aiden, the boy had just lost his grandmother after all, but he trusted Percy's judgement more than his own and so he nodded as he ascended the stairs, watching as Aiden hurried after Plato only to wait for him and Percy at the top of the stairs.

'It's that one,' he said softly, pointing to the door. 'Go on.' He let Aiden himself open it and he could only hope that the boy would like it. He and Percy had spent most of the day before fixing the room up. Getting toys and books and making sure the room was in colours that most boys liked. The bedding was blue with golden snitches on it and Cass hoped Aiden would like it.

Percy wasn't sure if this should come from him, but a look at Cass told him that Cass was pretty much terrified of a child, which was almost comical considering that Cass went after the Lestranges.

"Do you know that some people get married? Well, we can't get married, because we're both men, but we love each other and care for each other, so we're almost like a married couple." He put a hand on Cass' back. He'd never said that he loved Cass, and this was as close to an admission as Cass had ever got.

"No, no more danger. He promised me. Now that he's not an Auror, he can be a lot more careful then before." Percy smiled. "He's not going to die, not for a long, long time, and even then you shouldn't worry. You'll be taken care of."

Cass was so utterly unprepared for what came that he simply sat there, easily letting Percy take over and answer Aiden's questions. But still it wasn't the questions that made his jaw drop, it was the answer.

Had Percy just admitted that he loved him? To his son of all people in the world? Then again he'd admitted it to others before mentioning it to Percy so maybe it wasn't so strange but it was still a very odd feeling. Somewhere between wanting to grin without stop because Percy had finally got some courage to admit it, and shock that it needed to be Aiden to bring it out of him.

His attention, snapped back though as Percy went on, and he looked down at Aiden, wanting to assure him of the same thing, yet not sure that it was what he had asked in the first place.

'Was that what you wanted to know?' he asked softly.

Aiden didn't notice the look on Cass' face, his own was mirroring the surprise and shock quite well. 'But-' He frowned. 'But, boys can't love each other!' he exclaimed finally. 'Boys grows up to fancy girls!'

He looked from Percy to Cass, feeling very confused. He was sure Nana never told him anything about a marriage between boys. Very sure in fact.

Then Cass asked him a question and he wasn't sure what he meant because in all of that he'd forgotten what he'd asked. When he remembered, he shook his head. 'I want to know what happens when people dies, what happened to Nana?'

"I know, that's what everyone tells you," Percy said. "That's what my own parents told me, and for a very long time, I believed them, because one always believes his parents, but sometimes adults make mistakes too. As you grow, you need to think for yourself, and it took me some time, and a lot of talking to your dad, before I realised that my parents were wrong. A man can fancy another man, and I care about your dad very much."

The other question was much harder to answer, but again, he chose not to lie. "No one knows for sure. Some people believe that good people go to heaven. Others think that you just disappear. A man, a very important man, used to say that death was the start of a new adventure. Some others think you come back with another body. No one knows for sure. I like to think that we can't be doing so much learning just to become nothing. One way or another, I think we live on."

Aiden wanted to ask more, about his mum, about parents, but when both Percy and Cass told him not to now, he nodded. He wasn't sure if he needed anything other than he had in the bag, but then mum packed it and he didn't really know what was in it.

Obediently getting off the bed, he walked over to it, though he didn't get to open it before he turned to look.

'Why don't I want you to give me food?' he asked Cass with wide eyes.

Cass gave Percy a look then smirked. 'Because I'm really really bad at cooking,' he said making a face. 'So bad in fact that Percy has made me promise never to even try to cook.'

He smiled as Aiden giggled. 'Percy cooks well though, you'll like his food. I'm better at other things, like flying. Have you ever flown before?'

He wasn't surprised when Aiden shook his head. 'Would you ever want to? We could go up together if you want to. I'd hold onto you so you don't fall and when you're better you can learn to fly on your own.'

Aiden giggled still, thinking it funny that Cass couldn't cook. That was until he realised that he might get to fly.

'Can I really?' he asked expectantly, looking from Cass to Percy, waiting for their approval.

"Of course you can," Percy said. "Your dad is really good; he can teach you, after your school work and assignments, obviously." It wouldn't hurt to remind father and son of the fact.

"Just as long as you remember not to ask for snacks after it. If you're hungry find something already made. Your dad isn't allowed near the stove. I like this house too much to see it go up in flames because he tries to cook," he added, winking at Aiden. "Now, why don't we go and get something ready for dinner? You can help me, and we can see if you're as bad as your dad."
