RP: "Usually when things have gone this far..."
Date: September 4, 2006 (evening)
Characters: Neville Longbottom, Ginny Longbottom (Weasley)
Location: 7 Oddington
Private/Public: Private
Rating: PG so far
Warnings: Worn-out-Neville
Summary: Neville and Ginny talk about Alice and her condition, and the condition of Neville himself
Completion: Incomplete

Neville didn't know whether it was the wine he was drinking, or the fire in front of him that was making him tired... or then again, it could be he didn't get a wink of sleep the night before and had been up all day working. Almost nodding off a few times, all he could see was Alice crying and asking for her 'baby' and Neville felt that emptiness he felt before when he didn't know how to explain. When his mother was like that, he did feel like a child, small and helpless with a severe lack of words.

But he tried... so hard.

Being so tired, he didn't even hear Ginny saying his name and he jumped when her hands were felt upon his shoulders. "Hey... you want some wine...'s really good." Oh yeah, and being slightly knackered didn't help him much either.

Ginny arrived home from work, feeling exhausted from numerous different areas. She saw Neville sitting in front of the fire, a glass of wine in his hand. She came up behind him and rubbed his shoulders gently, placing a kiss on the top of his head. They hadn't had much of a chance to talk lately, between everything happening, and Ginny wanted to make sure that he was dealing okay.

"Hey love," she murmured into his hair, and then rounded the couch to curl up next to him on the couch. She rested her head on his shoulder and stared into the fire. "I can get it, but in a minute. I just want to sit here with you for a little while." She sighed against his shoulder. You sound tired, baby. When's the last time you got a good night's sleep?"

Neville smiled for the first time since he'd gotten home, feeling Ginny's kiss on the top of his head. His arm went round her shoulders when she'd sat down beside him, his shoulder a pillow for her head. "Alright, that sounds like a good plan."

Taking another sip of his third glass, he sighed deeply afterward and kissed the top of her head in a delayed return, noting that her hair smelled like summer; fresh and flowers lingering in the background. "Hmmmm?" It took him a minute to process what she was saying and thought it best to put the wine aside. "I don't know... a few days. I catch a few hours here and there. My mind just doesn't seem to shut off sometimes." Giving Ginny a quick squeeze, he pulled her closer. "I'm just happy to be home."

She sighed and wished she hadn't been on nights this past week. If she'd been home she could have made him sleep at least. "Do you want to talk about it?" she said, leaning against him. "I'm sorry I haven't been around as much as we both would have liked."

She knew he was going through a lot with his mother, and she tried to be there as much as she could, but sometimes it was impossible. "I'm happy to be here too. I'm on days again, so when I get home in the afternoons if there's anything you want to do, or if your Mum needs help, I'll be here."

Neville was smiling and felt at peace with Ginny sitting next to him. When she'd asked if he wanted to talk, he considered it, but wallowed in the peacefulness for a little while longer. "It's alright love, you're good at what you do, people need you... you make them feel safe." He kissed her temple lightly to let her know that he was one of those people.

"Mmmm that's good, I can make you breakfast again." Neville's fingers played with a lock of hair that had tumbled down his chest from his shoulder, letting it slide between his fingers. Sighing at the mention of his Mum, he bit his lip. "I don't know if anyone can really help her Ginny. Last time I went to see her... I had a really hard time." His mind raced at the memory and he looked at her peripherally. "She was asking for me... but... her 'baby'. She thought she was our age. And I don't know what to do for her if she's stuck in the past."

Ginny sighed and relaxed against Neville, feeling the tension of the day drain from her bones. Somehow, that always seemed to happen when she was near Neville. "Love you," she murmured, nestling closer under his arm. "Breakfast sounds great." She sighed as he stroked her hair, relaxing just a bit more for a little while longer.

Her heart felt heavy as Neville explained what was going on with his mother. "Oh, Neville, I'm so sorry," she whispered, tilting her head up so she could look at him. "That's got to be so hard." She'd known Alice wasn't doing too well, and that she had been stuck in the past a few weeks ago, but she hadn't realized just how stuck she was. "Is there anything I can do?"

Neville felt Ginny melting against his side, enjoying the sleepy, euphoric feeling at having the house to themselves and the quiet time to share. He smiled dreamily at his wife and kissed her lightly. "Love you too Ginny." Continuing to play with her hair, he was soothed further and remembered the small packet of steel cut Scottish oats he'd gotten from a patron at the shelter for a thank you gift. It would go nicely with some fruit for porridge in the mornings.

His thoughts switched from breakfast to his mother quickly, and Neville knew that Ginny was concerned for the both of them. "It's alright love... no one could have seen this coming." He sighed heavily and rested his forehead against hers for a moment. "Just.. be here for me. Talking about it feels better." Thinking out loud, Neville spoke softly. "She doesn't seem to remember each visit. But if she does, it's only in snippets. I don't want to upset her... so I haven't been telling her much, just truths that feel safe. It's only a matter of time though when I'll need to tell her the whole truth... that I'm her son."

Neville gazed at Ginny just then and nodded. "You might have to be there for that one. Don't think I could do it without you." Running a hand through her long red hair, Neville sighed again and cupped her face in his hand afterward. "I'm so glad you're here with me."

"Of course I'll be there," she said, pressing closer to him. "I wouldn't want you to have to face that alone." She bit her lip. "I'm not sure I'll be much help, though. I don't know that I'd know what to say." She chewed her lower lip, wondering how much support she could really be, when she didn't even know what to say or think.

She sighed and pressed her lips against his neck. "I love you," she said, trying to convey just how much she loved him in her voice. "I'd do anything for you, and that includes helping you through this." She reached up and turned his head to face her. "Never think that I'd rather be anywhere else than where you are, okay?" She leaned in and kissed him softly, the action more of a reassurance than a seduction. "Just tell me what you need, and I'll do my best to do it."

Neville heaved a sigh of relief when Ginny said that she'd be there with him when he had to tell Alice that he was her son. Shaking his head though, he leaned into her, just glad of her touch. "Thank you love." She did seem nervous, almost anxious and Neville knew just how she felt. "You will be a help, I know that right now, even if it's only for me." The thought had crossed his mind that Alice may not believe him at all.. having someone else there who's telling her the truth may help too, but he didn't want to put that on Ginny. Just her presence would make things easier.

He was drowsy and pleasantly warm, more from her and the drink than the fire. When her lips touched his neck and the sound of her voice reached him, Neville felt perfectly happy, despite all his concerns. They dissolved in an instant. Ginny's hand turned his head gently to face her and Neville watched the flame of the fire reflect in her eyes even as she spoke. Neville kissed her back softly and thought he would be content just to sit here and be with her all night. "I'll never doubt it."

It was his turn to draw her in close and hold her against him just to have her near. "You've already done more than you know Ginny." Kissing her temple and sighing into her hair, Neville thought for a moment. "All I need is for you to be near and I'll know everything will turn out alright." It was true, she made him feel lighter and more optimistic. If Ginny could love him this much, return the love he felt for her, than Neville felt anything was possible.
