Summary: Theo is working on finding Montague's attacker when he's suddenly distracted by what goes on in Upper Slaughter
Theo was frowning as he poured over the lists and papers before him. As much as he wanted Montague's attacker to be Bletchley he couldn't deny that the evidence suggested that he was not. In the end, Bletchley just did not know advanced enough magic to manage an attack like this, nor did he have any motives. Which left Theo with the problem of who on the list did.
He'd ruled out Higgs early on, one because the man had no motive, two because he'd not even been in the country at the time of the attack.
Ginger and Lettie both seemed harmless and even though he (naturally) checked out their abilities, there was no evidence that either had the magic required. And naturally he knew he himself had not done this.
Which left Dolohov. Now that was a real possibility, he couldn't deny that the man would probably have knowledge of this kind of magic. The problem was what his motive would be. Why would the man attack his god-daughter's husband out of no where? Still, he couldn't deny that the man had the skills. Perhaps he needed to look into the man more carefully? See if he had some motive that was not obvious.
'He's the only one on the list that would have the skill, after all,' Theo said out loud to himself.
A sound behind him, the clearing of a throat, made him turn. He looked at the painting behind him which had made the sound. 'You don't agree?' he asked Uncle Nathaniel who smiled in return.
'I am not saying if I do or don't, but you have not looked at the entire list yet,' he pointed out. Theo frowned.
'Yes I have.' He looked back down, checking every name. 'Well all besides the Montagues but they hardly have a motive to attack their heir.
'Oh?' Uncle Nathaniel asked, raising an eyebrow. 'Do you not know your own family history, Theo? And here I thought I had taught you better than that.'
Theo frowned. He knew the Nott family history like the back of his hand, but he could not remember any parents attacking their heir. He looked down at the list, seeing - as for the first time – the other names of the family members.
Parents hadn't attacked their heirs, but second sons had. Several times.
Guilian.
Writing down the name next to Dolohov's it was clear which man would have more motive. With Montague out of the picture Guilian would be the heir to the Montague fortune. Still there was the issue of the level of magic. Would someone as young as Guilian know enough about magic to be able to do something like this?
Getting up, Theo paced the floor. Guilian had motive, but did he have the means? Dolohov should have the knowledge but did he have the motive? He would have to look at both, see what he could fin-
His trail of thought stopped suddenly as something changed. He couldn't tell what it was, but something felt different. It wasn't more than a few seconds since one of the elves appeared in the room.
'The wards around Upper Slaughter are down, Master,' the elf piped up, looking worried about the reaction to the news. Theo paled. 'And around the manor?' He already knew the answer, knew that was what he'd felt. He no longer had access to Lestrange Manor.
'Changed too, locked,' the elf confirmed. Theo didn't even thank the elf as he sent it away, sinking down into a chair, all thoughts of Dolohov and Guilian vanished from his mind. So Upper Slaughter was now visible for all to see – and Lestrange Manor was locked to him, to everyone. Just as Severus had said it would be should Rodolphus die.
He closed his eyes, a sense of loss washing over him. He did not allow the feeling to take hold, however, knew there were things to do. Not trusting his penmanship he summoned a quick quotes quill and dictated two letters, having Samsy deliver them rather than sending them by owl.
***
Severus,
The wards around Upper Slaughter are down and the Manor is locked down, just as you predicted.
Theo.
***
Draco,
The wards around Upper Slaughter are down and Lestrange Manor is locked down to all but family.
