Summary: Cass arranges a surprise for Percy on his birthday.
It was annoying planning a birthday surprise when you didn't have a wand and your movements were still limited to slow walks around the neighbourhood. Hogsmeade wasn't the ideal place for perfect presents, after all.
He had pondered asking Susan to arrange a portkey to Italy, to the villa in Naples again, but he held back. As much as he loved it, the only time he'd managed to bring Percy was a few days before he messed everything up. The last thing he wanted to do on Percy's birthday was to remind Percy of how badly he'd messed up.
So he'd pondered other options. Getting Ginny to go off to the muggle world with a list of things to get had been a good one – until he remembered that was illegal now, which made him swear so loudly that Sabina hid under the sofa. He had a feeling that as much as she liked him, she missed his mother's softer ways. Not that he wanted to think of his mother at the moment. It only made him depressed.
So instead he went back to trying to figure out what to do for Percy's birthday, which was proving to be very difficult indeed. Eventually he'd contacted Pansy to arrange for the inn to deliver food and a cake, which he guessed was better than asking Susan to make it, not that he hadn't thought of that, he'd just figured that Percy wouldn't appreciate it.
He'd appreciate him not trying to make it though. Actually they'd both appreciate that.
A present was harder. Not only harder but extremely difficult. Hogsmeade wasn't the most well stocked of places and there was only a limited number of things that Percy would actually like. Most of what he could think of – music, books – were all from the Muggle world and hence illegal these days, and any interesting books in the wizarding world cost and arm and a leg with the way things were at the moment.
Actually if you wanted something good, you'd most likely have to get it through the black market, which wouldn't bother him, if it wasn't for the fact that Percy was the head of Aurors and shouldn't be connected to things like that while Umbridge was after him. No legality was essential.
Which was why he'd finally settled for a beautiful (and horribly overpriced) eagle quill, and a wood and glass inkwell charmed to never leak or break with a holder for the quill in silver. Perhaps a bit extravagant but luckily Cass had barely spent any money at all since the news of his mother's kidnapping. Uncharacteristically for him, but fortunate now, the saved up money was more than enough to buy both the quill and the inkwell – even at such a high price.
He'd of course hinted nothing to Percy about what he'd been planning, and now he was waiting for him to come home from work. The food had been delivered, as had the cake, and the present was sitting on the coffee table. All that was missing now was Percy.
