With every passing day, Theo grew more worried about Verity. Yes, it was Montague that had been attacked, and Montague that was now lying in what could only be described as a coma, but it was Verity who spent all her time sitting by his bed. So much so, that he'd had to remind her to spend time with her son, that he had to remind her to eat, to take care of herself.
She didn't even spend time in the rose garden.
And yet, Verity wasn't his only concern. Over and over he'd revisited his meeting with Rodolphus. There were many things bothering him about that meeting, which was the primary reason he hadn't talked to Draco about it yet. He just didn't know what to make of it.
Was the weakness real or played? If real, why did he allow him to see it? If fake, what was his plans? Surely it couldn't only be to make the other side underestimate him...or could it be that simple?
And then it was his reaction - or rather lack of reaction - to Montague's attack. Was that because he'd ordered it? And if so, why had he settled on him being put to sleep? Or had someone else try, or like Draco had suggested, ordered him to finish the job. If nothing else it would be a show of loyalty, one that would leave him no doubts as to his loyalties. All those things seemed to indicate he hadn't been behind this, and yet if he hadn't ordered it, then why didn't it seem to concern him that one of his Death Eaters was running around attacking other Death Eaters? Shouldn't it annoy him that someone went around making their own rules, and hurting a supporter in the meantime? Or didn't he count Montague as a supporter?
Which of course led back to the first question - had he ordered it?
He had of course not said a word to Verity about his doubts or thoughts. There was no need to worry her and it was definitely unwise to do so. Instead he tried to give her some space, though when Mimsy came and told him that Verity was crying harder than ever, he knew he couldn't leave her alone. Not today.
He was not oblivious to what day it was.
Thanking Mimsy, he walked up to the room Verity and Monty were in, knocking briefly before stepping inside. 'Hi, Ver,' he said softly. 'Mind if I keep you company for a while?'
