Padma had not slept well for the past couple of nights. It wasn't because she was tossing and turning, but she found that she had constant indigestion, and her continuous short trips to the bathroom kept her from drifting into a restful sleep. The healer had said that the little one had turned fully, and was ready to be born at any time. Of course, now the baby was turning and pressing uncomfortably against her which wasn't terribly comfortable at all. It was only natural that her mind was racing as well. There was that thread of concern over the risks of the birth - risks that grew closer ever day.
She had tried not to disturb Theo's sleep, even suggesting that perhaps he should go and sleep in another bed. A part of her felt great relief when he refused to sleep anywhere else, but she knew her constant tossing and turning was affecting him as well. He was wrapped around her as they lay in bed, his hand protectively guarding her belly as she tried to sleep.
Her mouth was dry and she wanted to groan as she felt the need to move. She had only just got comfortable, having finally found relief for the ache in her lower back. As she reached out for the glass of water by the bed, she felt the little move again. Only this time, it felt much worse. Worse, and definitely not in the place that she knew his feet had been kicking only an hour earlier.
The sharp pain happened again and she let a whimper escape her lips. Her heart hammered in her chest as it was followed by another, and a sharp and unmistakeable rush of wetness spilled out between her legs. This time her whimper turned into a cry as she clutched at her belly, barely able to breathe from the pain.
"Theo, I think it's time," she said, without any fanfare and a hint of solid fear laced in her voice.
