'Susan?' Pansy repeated. 'Susan Bones?' She frowned. 'Well, I guess I should owl her, tell her thank you and offer to help out however I can. You know Hilly would love to have the chance to cook for you some time,' she pointed out.
She gave him a smile considerably warmer than the one she'd gotten, but she understood that he was feeling down just then. 'You are a good man, Cass Vaisey, don't tell yourself different. And you would do the same for me, if our situations were reversed, so just hush!'
She patted his arm and said, 'You'll stay the evening with us, of course. Have a good meal, whether you're hungry or not, and spend some time with Harry and Polly. Polly would love a chance to tell you 'No' as it's her new most favourite word. And she'll make eyes at you and flirt with you and babble at you while we all nod and pretend that we know what she's telling us.'
She looked at him anxiously. 'You know, darling, if you need a break, you're welcome to stay with us. Or, there's the manor house at the estate....' she offered.
