Susan was sitting quietly at her desk, slowly and methodically working her way through the large pile of paperwork that magically never seemed to get any lower.
She was working quietly, trying to keep one eye on Cass. It was almost statistically impossible, as he never seemed to sit still. But since Monday, she'd noticed that something was different. He didn't seem to be himself, and if she had to put her finger on it, she'd say that he was sad about something. He smiled, and laughed, still, but it didn't quite seem to be to his usual level.
Something was up, and she was determined to find out what it was.
But just then an elf popped into existence right next to her, placing another parcel on the neverending pile. "What's this?" she said to the strange elf.
When told it was from the Minister, and it was an intercepted parcel from an unregistered owl, she was ready to give the elf the sharp end of her tongue. She wasn't a bloody postal worker, and Umbridge could take her owl decree and shove it up her pink clad...
But instead, she just sighed in frustration. The last thing she needed was the old bitch telling her what to do. She smiled at the elf instead, thanking it in her most honeyed voice.
Sitting back, she opened the parcel and her eyes widened just a little as she read it over. A moment later, she unravelled a severed finger, letting out a loud sound of distaste.
That was disgusting, although there was only one Rabastan this could have been meant for. Perhaps Umbridge had done something right by bringing this to their attention (not that she'd admit it to anyone).
"GM," she muttered, looking at the initials on the end of the letter. "Who could this be?" It was obviously some Death Eater, one who was obviously going after people and killing them. Why else send a finger?
It looked as if there had been some sort of ring on it - a very vivid white ring mark on the digit. But it was gone. No doubt GM took it.
So great. Out there was some sort of dead body missing a finger, and a death eater who obviously was contracted to do kills.
Where did she start on this? Death Eater lists? The morgue? Eventually, she summoned the missing persons lists, and seeing the size of the pile, knew that was going to be a long process. Find a missing person missing a finger, then find out if they knew anyone named GM.
Somehow Susan just knew this was going to be a fun case. Knowing her luck, Umbridge would probably want a personal update on it, and just to spite her, she intended to find out who it was, and who was missing their finger. That would put the old bag in her place.
So began the long and tedious task of a brand new case - one she was determined to solve.
