RP: When you're left with no other choices
Date:1 June 2006
Characters: Miles Bletchley, Cass Vaisey
Location: Bletchley Manor
Warnings: probably angry people. Well, Cass most likely.
Summary: Miles passes on Rodolphus' ultimatum to Cass.
Miles had not slept the night before. He lied to Daphne (hating himself in the process), but this was not her worry - she had enough of her own with Lestrange taking over her family home. This was his mission, and it was his life and his goddam friends that the bastard was now fucking with. Not that he envied the position he was asking Cass to be put in. Not in the least. He just wished that he could do this and be able to get on with a quiet life. That obviously wasn't going to be the case.
It was bad enough that Cass was an Auror. As long as their paths never crossed in battle, then everything had been good. It had always stretched their friendship to the very edge ever since leaving school. Yet now...
Miles downed the drink, tasting nothing and not caring that it was probably far too early to be drinking. Whatever way the day was going to pan out, he was more than likely going to lose a friend. There were plenty of other possibilities of how the day would end, but he wasn't going to even contemplate those. Even if he did manage to get through the day and lay his head on the pillow that night, he doubted Cass would be ending the day in genuinely restful slumber.
Through it all, he was still shaking his head at what he'd learned about his friend. He wasn't even going to contemplate doubting Lestrange's information - it was most likely true. But damn, Cass was a fucking mudblood, and had lied about it since... well, as long as he remembered knowing Cass.
That much did not sit well with him, and had he only learned of that, and not had to do any more, he probably still would have been having a long bloody talk with Vaisey. That, and the fact that apparently he was living with bloody Percy Weasley. To be perfectly honest, he really wouldn't care if Cass shacked up with a guy. But a Weasley? Surely he had much more taste than that.
He'd encouraged Daphne to take the boys into Honeydukes (he'd already primed Liam for that trip, and she really couldn't say no to the boy's big green pleading eyes), and suggested she take a look at whatever she was going to need in the way of new robes. She obviously didn't look pregnant, but he had no real idea when she was going to need maternity robes, and right now, it was just an excuse to keep her away from the manor for a while.
He felt the Manor's wards shifting as he sat in his study, staring blankly at broom plans to try and distract himself. It was no use, and Cass was here now. He cast a few very basic protection spells around the room, letting them sink into the background of the room, and hoping to hell he was just being overly cautious.
Waiting for Zorbin to bring Cass up, he put the plans to one side, pulling out some glasses and whiskey, and a box of Cuban cigars. He already had one in his mouth when he looked up to see his old friend, the smirk widening on his face. He tried not to show any signs of anything but his usual mirth, and his grin was wide. "Whiskey and cigars, as promised. I'll even let you get in one free crack about my wife's current condition."
"How are you?"
