Summary: Blaise reflects on recent events and is desperate for a night off.
Blaise took a seat outside in his backyard, his snake Sabine coiled around his left arm. He'd arrived at the stone building two hours ago, and had just finished fixing a few things up to make it liveable for the next little while. He didn't intend to let anyone know he'd be here, and planned to not allow any owls onto his property as he was not in the mood for communication.
While he'd been planning to pick up his studies once again he'd instead been summoned to England, to his mother's newest home. She'd apparently grown tired of her newest husband, and Blaise had barely made it in time to keep him alive. While thus far he'd turned a blind eye to her actions, he was not about to allow a ninth death, not with the state of things these days. While Umbridge seemed to prefer investigating those closer to the Order, he wasn't about to press his family's luck.
He'd ended up remaining at their home for a week, keeping an eye on the woman. While he didn't particularly care for his latest step-father, he did care for his mother's reputation. One more death would only damage it further.
Even with his presence it hadn't seemed to sway Kami's plans much. At times it had almost seemed as though the woman was acting under the influence of some other power, with no regard for anything Blaise told her.
It was a rough go, parenting your own mother.
As luck had it the boring British gentleman had to leave town for two weeks for business, leaving Kami alone in their mansion. This suited Blaise fine, as no damage could be done if the man wasn't around. He'd left his mother yesterday, finally, not listening to her pleas for him to remain.
Now he sat in the midst of the garden, contemplating the thought of going out into the nearby village with Sabine and looking for a small Muggle child to allow his pet snake to feast on. Perhaps he would do just that later, depending on his mood.
For now he was content to relax in his chair, running his fingers over the scales on Sabine's lengthy body. The snake wound around his torso, it's head wrapping around the back of his neck and slithering down his chest. He'd been neglecting the reptile as of late.
He picked up the piece of parchment he'd brought with him and produced a quill, writing a quick note to Theodore.
Dear Theo,
My apologies for not responding sooner. I received your present - thank you for the gifts, they were fabulous as always. The reason for my absence though is that I have been busy visiting my mother and her newest husband. Things have been a little strained, though that is of course to be expected from time to time when you attempt to integrate the lives of two very different people. Things have been smoothed over for now, however.
I am also writing you to inquire into the possibility of meeting up for drinks some time in the near future. I do believe we are overdue for a night out, myself especially. Let me know of your availability in the next week.
Blaise
He read over the parchment before calling to his eagle, Hibiki. The bird had been perched on the stone wall around his home, its eyes trained on its master. He'd not been pleased to read of the newest decree, though in order to appease the woman he would have his owl registered. His eagle, on the other hand, was not going to suffer the indignity.
Blaise had come to realize only too late that his two favourite possessions in the world - his snake and his eagle, appeared to consider one another mortal enemies. He held up right right arm, allowing Hibiki to settle on it. Sabine's tongue flickered in and out of its mouth as it turned its large head to gaze at the eagle, and suddenly Hibiki shot forward, talons poised to rip at the eyes of the reptile.
Blaise raised his arm quickly, pulling the eagle out of reach. Sabine hissed a warning to the bird, who did not back away. Wanting to avoid a battle between the creatures, Blaise quickly stuffed the letter into Hibiki's right claw, staring the bird in the eye and instructing it to find Theo and wait for an answer before returning. The bird was the only animal who would be allowed entry into the grounds on its own, as all others would be kept out by the Fidelius charm Blaise had put over the estate.
He watched the bird fly away once he'd finished with his instruction before returning his attention to the snake. Sabine, unimpressed with the bird and wanting to make that fact known, had tightened her body around Blaise's throat, attempting to show the wizard just what she thought of his other choice of pet.
Blaise was not in the mood for disrespect from his pets, however, and stared Sabine in the eyes, telling her in no uncertain terms to remove herself from his neck. The snake understood (even though Blaise did not speak Parseltongue) but remained clamped a moment longer, proving her point.
Blaise relaxed a little when Sabine loosened her body from around his neck. It was never pleasant business, getting strangle by a snake. He liked his pets with personality, though. He never would have settled for a tame beast.
