RP: Out on the Town
Date: 6 April 2006
Characters: Lee Jordan, Valery Shaklebolt, Hestia Jones
Location: Honeydukes, High Street, 214 Cicero Lane
Private/Public: public to semi-private/private
Rating: G/PG
Warnings: none so far
Summary: Lee goes out for sweets, and finds a little sweety looking for her Daddy all on her own ...

Lee, though laid back and easy going, wasn't the sort to just sit around and do nothing. He liked to have his time filled and his hands busy when possible, to feel useful.

He decided a walk down the streets of Hogsmeade -- and thus memory lane, to an extent -- were in order. Of course, Bane had decreed that she come with him. Since the place was new to the Yorkie, he put a leash on her, though it was a formality -- and it wasn't like she couldn't slip it whenever she wanted. He'd yet to find a spell to help with that.

The small, ten-pound terrier (none of those tea-cup things for him) trotted happily at his side, her "it's spring but not quite that warm yet" haircut making her look shaggy. The story behind Bane was a long one, but these days it seemed normal for him to bring the dog almost anywhere. Leash hooked loosely to the loop of his jeans -- too much time in the Muggle world the last several years made them habit -- he walked down the street.

Honeydukes caught his eye. He'd been in there numerous times during his Hogwarts years, and now he couldn't resist pushing open the door and stepping inside.

Valery had her Strawberry Shortcake bag on her back and her shoes were on the right feet (she thought...) and she had a bit of cheese and her sippy cup of juice. She was all set.

She was on a Very Important Mission. She needed to find her Daddy. She understood that he'd been off to visit the angels with Mama Rose, but Miss Hestia really needed him and she thought it was about time for him to come back now. Hopefully, she would be able to find him before it turned dark, she didn't much like being out at dark, but she knew that she couldn't help Miss Hestia the way Daddy could.

She felt like she'd been walking for quite some time and it was a long time since she'd been able to not see home. She saw the clinic on her walk and she looked carefully at anyone she passed incase Daddy was in disguise.

She was getting a little tired when she saw a man who was tall like Daddy and was the same color as Daddy and she grinned, getting excited. "Daddy!" she called and ran to him, throwing her arms around his legs as he stepped out of the shop. She could smell the sugar coming from the door but she didn't dare go inside. She'd found him and she couldn't let go or he might leave again.

Lee had browsed the shop for awhile, Bane quiet but for the faint jingle of her licenses on her collar. She was barely a year old but she was well-trained -- his sister Summer had a drab hand with animals for all that she had no magical talent.

He was surprised that as he stepped outside, a small form sprinted over and flung itself at his legs. He blinked down at the little girl, who had just called him Daddy, something that reminded him that he didn't have any children of his own yet. There was time, though.

"What's this?" he said kindly, touching the little girl's head. It was an ill-kept secret that he adored children, and his niece and nephew back home, as well as the extended cousins, could speak to that fact.

"Who are you, little bit?" he asked. She was tiny compared to him, paler than him as well though just as obviously mixed more toward his end of the skin spectrum. Bane snuffled at her feet.

She'd found him! She'd found him! She couldn't believe it! She was so excited! Vaguely she wondered if the angels lived in the sweets shop and decided it wasn't a very large stretch of her imagination.

But Daddy didn't sound like Daddy at all... when he touched her head she looked up at him and she realised he didn't exactly look like Daddy either... He had very long hair and Daddy didn't have any hair at all and his voice was much... more like puppies than Daddy's was...

She frowned pitifully when she realised he wasn't really her Daddy after all. She stepped away from him and he asked who she was. It was hard not to smile at this not-Daddy. He was a very smiley man too. "I'm Val'ry," she said, holding her hand up to him the way big people did.

"I'm sorry Misser, I was looking for my Daddy and I t'ought you might be 'im."

Her little face fell when she looked up at him and he felt like his heart would break in response. Not only did he love kids, but he was a sucker for a damsel in distress … and if this little girl didn’t qualify he didn’t know who did.

He felt extremely tall as she held up her hand to him, and he crouched to take it and shook it gently, his large hand engulfing hers entirely.

“Nice to meet you, Valery,” he said with all due seriousness. “I’m Lee.” He’d never enjoyed being ‘Mr. Jordan.’ That was his father, and he didn’t think much of the man who was never around when he was needed.

“That’s all right,” he told the child. He looked around and saw no one that seemed to be responsible for the child. “Maybe I can help you find your daddy.” He wasn’t going to leave until he knew the child was with her caretaker, be it her father or someone else.

Valery smiled as strongly as she could when he shook her hand. However when he introduced himself her eyes widened. "That's my Daddy's name! Are you my Daddy?!" she asked him hopefully. "It's me, it's Val!" she said, hoping he'd remember her so she could take him home.

That was when she noticed the little doggy at her feet and she gasped. "Puppy!" she reached out to pet it. "Daddy, is the puppy for me?" she asked him looking up. Maybe that's why he'd been gone so long?! She'd been asking for a puppy...

When he offered to help her find her Daddy she felt a little discouraged again. "You're sure you're not him?" she asked, cocking her head to make sure that he didn't look more like Daddy when she looked at him differently.

"No, honey," he said, shaking his head. "I don't think I'm your daddy." Her hopeful little face and earnest manner made him wish he could say he was, just to make her smile again.

Bane's short stub of a tail wagged excitedly as the little girl noticed her. She licked at the child's hands. "She's mine. Her name is Bane, but you can call her just about anything and she'll answer." Gator-bait was one of his favourites.

"I'm sure, little bit," he said. "I think I'd remember if I had a little girl as pretty and nice as you. But maybe I can help you find him or your mum. Is no one with you now?"

Valery's face fell again, but she set her jaw so that she didn't look too upset and nodded. "Okay Misser," she conceded. "I guess I knew that anyway," she told him. He did look sincerely upset that he couldn't be her Daddy for her.

"Bane?" she asked, smiling and almost giggling as the puppy tried to lick her.

There was something about the way he kept calling her that- 'little bit'- that made her like him, or maybe think that he liked her. She smiled at him when he called her pretty and nice.

"No, I don't have a mummy. She got upset and went away," she said. "I have a Miss Hestia, but she's not here. That's why I'm looking for Daddy. Miss Hestia is trying real hard to take care of me and baby brother but she cries lots at night, I hear her. And she always looks sad.

"Miss Hestia said Daddy went to visit the angels with Mama Rose and I really think he needs to come home 'cause just between you and me, Misser, Miss Hestia's not doing very good. But she's trying Misser, she tries really hard!"

Valery looked down at the doggy again and petted its furry little head good like Miss Hestia showed her to pet the kittens. Then she looked up at him. "Do you know where the Angels are, Misser? I thought they might be in there," she said, looking at the sweets shop.

Bane obviously loved the attention. Lee is always amused by what an attention hog his little dog can be, but then, he likes the attention from her himself, so he can't complain.

The more Valery talked and explained, the more he felt his heart break. Her mother had abandoned her, it sounded like, and her father had died, probably recently, and her stepmother was sad and there was a new baby.

"I don't think there are any angels in there," he told her kindly. "I was just there and I think I would have noticed."

How to tell the little girl she wouldn't see her Daddy again, that he couldn't come back to her and 'Miss Hestia'? He daren't point above him and say angels were up there ... next time the girl might find a broom and get herself hurt.

"Angels don't live where people can find them. Sometimes you can feel them watching you, but you can't find them when you look. If your daddy is an angel, I bet he's watching after you, but I don't think you'll find him."

Nimue's bad hair day, he felt like a scab for telling that to a child.

She hadn’t even realized Val was gone, she’d been feeding Shae, putting him down for a nap, Georgiana and Jacob out of the house when she’d called for the girl to help with their own dinner. When she didn’t respond Hestia thought perhaps she’d gone to take a nap, she was better- much better- but she still got tired more quickly.

With a slow pace she looked in all the normal places she fell asleep- and nothing. She began to check closets, chests, nooks, crannies… Soon she was nearly yelling Valery’s name, waking Shae up who screamed and cried at his premature sleep.

Hestia felt herself pale in fear. Oh God, where did she go? The door was always unlocked… Someone could have- She packed Shae’s things quickly and when she dropped her son off with her sister Ginger had looked at her like she was crazy before letting her leave.

She’d searched everywhere, the old house, Honeydukes, the Auror office, even asked the secretary there if she’d seen Val, a bit annoyed by the precautions- her wand, the glamours. She left even more annoyed and sick and worried and then she was heading to the pitch- God if something happened…

Hestia’s panic was only getting worse. She’d told the ignorant woman that her daughter was missing and the woman said she’d get an Auror when she could which only annoyed her more thoroughly, but at the time- right now- she needed to look for Val not sit on her ass and wait for some Auror to find time for her!

She was retracing her steps back when she saw a tall black man ahead of her. Nothing strange of that, but the girl on his hip….

“Valery!” She nearly screamed, she didn’t know what that man was doing- but she was rushing, panic and relief cycloning in her gut as she moved to the pair.

Lee held Valery easily and strolled down the street, letting the girl chatter. He was seriously considering stopping in one of the shops and asking where someone named Hestia lived, because he was wondering how the hell he would return her little girl without knowing that tidbit.

He was also keeping his eyes open for someone who looked like they were missing a child. People like that tended to be distinctive.

He was saved all the trouble when a woman's loud yell sounded behind him, the child's name cutting through the air. He turned, the child still on his hip.

"It's okay, she's fine," he hastened to say in his deep, smooth voice. "I was just helping her look for," her dad, but he wasn't sure it was wise, "someone while trying to find ... well, you, I take it," he said. "I didn't want her to wander around on her own."

Valery continued talking to Lee and sometimes she forgot to be looking for Daddy but she knew he was looking, so it was okay. When she heard Miss Hestia's voice she jumped slightly in his arms.

"Miss Hestia!" she called excitedly. She let Misser Lee talk before she started in excitedly.

"Miss Hestia, this is Misser Lee and that," she pointed way down to where the dog was, "is Bane. He's Misser Lee's doggy. They're helping me find the angels so I can get Daddy to come home and you don't hafta cry anymore!" she explained excitedly.

She rushed over, and touched the little girl’s face, stroked her hair; looking up at the man she gave him a pointed look, he seemed- well, nice enough and it wasn’t a surprise Val had taken to him, after all; so she for a moment turned her attentions on Val. “Baby girl you scared me, you can’t just leave like that sweetheart!” She was trying not to get angry, right now she was just relieved. However, when she heard Val’s words tears filled in her eyes and she covered her mouth, trying to control herself as she looked up at this ‘Lee’ (which, she thought, was a rather cruel coincidence from God).

“I,” she swallowed, reminding herself not to get overemotional, but it was hard lately. “need to thank you, Lee? I- she…” Hestia took a breath. “I hope she hasn’t been a bother?” Hestia wasn’t even sure what to say at this point, she was just glad this man seemed nice enough to have helped…

Lee fell silent, feeling awkward with his excuse. He probably should have forced Valery to immediately tell him where her caregiver was. He hadn’t wanted to upset the little girl, though, especially in light of her apparent situation.

He felt a tug of sympathy as her eyes filled with tears – even living for so long with a house full of women hadn’t inured him to the mild panic that always arose when they started to cry.

“I’m sorry,” he said quietly. “I was trying to get her back home.” Pehraps he wasn’t thinking too clearly, but he could blame that on the time change which was starting to creep up on him the last couple of days.

“No, she isn’t a bother at all. Were you, little bit? We were having a nice chat.” He smiled at the child, that same open grin that often graced his face.

This woman looked so fragile and a little the worse for wear – her eyes were red rimmed and there were circles under them. “Look, can I help you get her home? It’s the least I can do for having caused you any panic.”

Valery frowned slightly when Miss Hestia chastised her and nodded. "Sorry Miss Hestia," she said quietly. She didn't want to make Miss Hestia mad at her. If she did then she might leave like Mummy had or like Daddy and Mama Rose... she was big enough to know that she wouldn't have anyone to take care of her then.

When Misser Lee said he was trying to get her home she didn't say anything but felt a little bitter stab. She knew it.

Her spirits raised a little when he called her 'little bit' again and she smiled at him. "I told him about the werewolves and the unicorns and Daddy and Mama Rose, and you, and Say Benny, and-" she didn't think that Hestia really wanted to hear all of that and just stopped.

When Misser Lee offered to 'help get her home' Valery bounced slightly, thinking it was a great idea.

"But wait! What about Daddy? We didn't find him yet," she told them. "And Miss Hestia, where's Say Benny?"

When he said he was only helping her home she felt her shoulders relax slightly and gave a weak smile. “Thank you again- and I really am sorry.” She said tiredly, lightly running a hand over Val’s hair. Looking back at the girl however, she gave her a stricken look upon hearing her words and had to swallow hard.

“Val-baby…” How did she tell Val Kingsley wasn’t coming back? She’d tried before, but it hadn’t seemed to work. “Shae is with Ginger, she’s watching him because I was worried about you, you left and scared me. It was very nice of Mister Lee to find you.” She looked up at him again with a feeble smile.

“Would you like some tea? I know- I keep apologizing- but thank you for helping her.” Hestia said quietly, she needed to come up with a way to explain why she couldn’t keep looking for her father- next time she was less likely to be found by someone like him.

“Didn’t feel like it,” she said with a thin crooked grin, “but yes. How far is she?” Hestia asked, trying to make conversation, though she knew she wasn’t very good at the whole ordeal, she needed friends of some sort- looking herself away with two tots was not good for her social skills.

The younger man seemed rather proud of his sisters’ and at that Hestia’s head tilted, entranced for a moment. She wondered what that would be like- to have such a bond with a sibling. She and Ginger had never got on… Though the fondness for the dog was much easier.

Internally shaking her head, she turned around to grab to mugs and pulled out her wand, waving the beans and grinder to her. “Crème and sugar, right?” She asked, looking over her shoulder before quickly grinding them and adding them to the coffee maker, the scent of the beans calming her nerves (she was getting addicted again).

Out of the corner of her eye she watched Val with the dog, Bane (if she remembered correctly), before turning around to face Lee. “They do. I haven’t seen Valery smile so much.” Hestia said with her own slip of the same.

He chuckled. "I can't even imagine," he replied. "Um, this far?" he said, indicating a rather rounded belly with his hands. "But it is her third. I'm not sure when she's due -- she's been with Bobby for a couple of years now, so it could be any time or awhile yet." He smiled sheepishly for not knowing the specifics.

Lee could brag on his sisters all day -- but he could also rag on them all day. He loved them, though, and was rather protective. Though talking about Shauna still hurt, even after the span of three years. He'd never fully dealt with her loss.

"Yes m'am," he said, leaning against the counter, out of the way of where she was working. "Can I help, or will I just be in the way?" he asked wryly.

He had a feeling she hadn't smiled hardly at all lately either. "Things have been rough around here, best I can tell," he said quietly. "I'm sorry for it." He felt bad for not being here -- for not being here when he might could have helped. No matter that he had his own family to care for at the time.

She laughed, surprising herself with the sound, nearly covering her mouth, before letting the smile come through anyway. “Three, how old are the other two?” She asked, sincerely interested, it was nice to be able to talk to someone about something semi-normal.

At his offer to help, she flipped some hair over her shoulder and glanced at the small table, “you’re fine, you can sit if you’d prefer.” Hestia gestured, she knew her kitchen was small, even expanded as it was, and that it could feel rather claustrophobic for some.

As the coffee brewed she moved to her ice box, pulling out the crème, reaching above to pull down the dish of sugar and turned around, holding them both as she shrugged slightly, trying not to let the emotions play across her face.

“Hogsmeade was supposed to be sanctuary; but-“ Hestia paused, worrying her lip, eyes thinking back to when people first began moving into town. “But the huge grouping- we’ve just become an easier target. A… plague is finish a rather nasty wipe through town. It ki-“ her voice caught, and she was glad when the coffee seemed to percolate, finishing itself off. Sliding to where it was she poured two glasses adding crème and sugar to his and only the milk to hers.

Lithely moving to sit down she gave him the simple mug, blowing on her own. “I hope it’s alright.” She nodded to the cup.

She had a pretty laugh, though he could tell she had about scared herself with the sound. Not much of that lately, he thought. "Ian is thirteen, though we're all still waiting for the big growth spurt to start," he said. "Quite a good boy, though. And Isa -- Isabella -- is just barely five. Rather shy but very sweet."

Jessie was about eight years older than him, so it wasn't odd for her to have kids those ages. He doted on his sister's children, probably the closest thing they had to a father figure. He missed them already.

He sat when she motioned him to. Being so tall, he did feel like he filled up too much of the space.

He winced faintly at the word plague. "I hadn't realized it was that bad," he said. "I just got back here after being gone several years." When she sat as well, he briefly put his hand on her arm; he was a person that touched, even in innocent situations. It was just his way.

"It's just fine, thank you," he said, sipping it. "Ah, heavenly caffeine, the true ambrosia of the gods."

“Thirteen?” That she had not expected, “does he go to Hogwarts?” She wondered if Jensen would have heard of him, not that Jensen talked much about the people he did and did not know when he was home… Not that he talked much at all. Biting her lip again, she gave him a warm look. “They sound wonderful. I’m sad to say that I don’t ever expect any nieces and nephews to spoil.” She said softly, knowing truly she never would, Ginger was infertile, a werewolf.

She watched out of the corner of her eye as he sat down, wondering if she was doomed to always be nearly eye level with men when they were sitting. Jaw clenching slightly as she swallowed a sip, nodding when he mentioned being gone, not knowing. The brief touch made her nearly shoot away, she wasn’t used to contact, any of the sorts, but she was trying not to be insulting- she’d done enough of that to people, and she just didn’t have the energy anymore to continue.

Another sip and she smiled a little, amused at his words. “I have to agree…”

"Yeah. Jessie, she's eight years older than me," he explained with an easy smile. Talking about his family made him happy. "No, he goes to a wizarding school in the U.S. -- my Mum's originally from there," he said. Of course, he was a Brit pretty much through and through, except for some of the slang he might have picked up the last couple of years.

"They are wonderful," he said with a definitive nod. "Aw, that's too bad," he said. "They're a pleasure to spoil. Between my younger sisters and them and my extended cousins, I've gotten to be around kids plenty." Though he has none of his own yet -- just hasn't met the right person, he supposed. Not having kids yet was probably his big regret about that.

She was flinchy, but he wasn't goign to apologize for touching her briefly. Everyone needed some human contact. He wished he could say something, do something, to make her feel better.

Ah, another small smile! Success, he thought to himself. "So Val is what, four, five?" he asked conversationally as they slowly sipped their coffee.

He had a particularly nice smile, she noted, as if it was the first time seeing it though he’d been doing so off an on the entire conversation. Giving him a weak one back, she nodded at his ‘thanks’ and listened evenly when he mentioned what he might need, or have to do. Getting special parts, that she could not help him with; she didn’t know the first thing about radio or wireless anything.

When he mentioned his second year, the dates attached, she did her best but some surprise came through widened eyes. He was younger then her, that she could tell- but that much so…she was surprised. However, that was not why she had asked, and hearing the date- she tried to remember him, his voice at all… Nothing. He would have only been twelve then, though, a boy’s voice changed much between twelve and the twenty-five-ish that he was now. Although there was something…

Her smile became a little more real as only few things could do anymore and she nodded, tapping her mug in remembrance. “You were the Gryffindor that took over my final year; Charlie Weasley lost them the Cup that year.” Bloody terrible lose too, to Slytherin of all people.

She seemed surprised as he listed off the years and dates. He wondered why, and then he got to thinking about why he didn't remember her from school. Surely he would have noticed someone like her.

His eyebrows raised slightly in his own surprise when she told him he'd taken over in her final year. "I was wondering why I didn't remember you ... I didn't think you were older than me." Despite being exhausted, she really didn't look that much older than him. Not that it was a large gap.

"Yeah, that was me. Nimue," the curse his sisters tended to use, he often got teased for usign it rather than Merlin, "that was a horrible loss. I think the entire House mourned it until after the Feast." And to Slytherin of all Houses, too.

"I always have loved announcing a good match, though."

Hestia nearly laughed again, putting both her hands around her cup. “Well thank you- I wish I looked as young as you thought- or felt that way.” She said, voice almost something like teasing. “But I was, am. I suppose.” Which just felt strange, she was used to everyone being older then her- though she almost always felt so much older then she was…

When he swore, she grinned slightly, strange curse to use- for a moment she thought he was saying a name or something; it took her a moment to realize… “It was, Ravenclaw was hoping to win, we were so close that year. I’m still disappointed in our seeker- he shouldn’t have caught it with so many points behind, I don’t know what he was thinking.” Really, all they’d needed was 100 more points…what had Cornwirth been thinking? It would have been the first Cup Ravenclaw would have won in years.

Not that he would have said she looked older if she had -- he was raised with sisters, he's not stupid -- but he really didn't think she looked older. "You're positively lovely, especially considering you have to care for two children," he said.

"I think sometimes Seekers react before they think," he said wryly. He'd seen enough games that he felt safe making the generalization. "Though admittedly you usually see it more in less experiences players."

"I did hear that the league here was disbanded or something. Does HOgwarts at least still have teams?"
