Fred hadn't left Katie's side... and everyone could tell. His eyes were sunken and red with fret, still scratching at his fading pox marks, but they were holding on for dear life, possibly as sympathy for his comatose wife.
George had woken from his coma and it was a great relief to Fred, it gave him hope that Katie would soon rise, but.. she was stubborn and she seemed much worse than George was. Fred barely ate, and looked like a pale skeleton sitting at her bedside night and day. Neville and Ginny would bring him food and comfort and Fred would also hear the words from George - if he could make it out, so would Katie.
But his hope was beginning to wane.
It was their birthday, their 28th birthday and George was still only recovering. So they couldn't do what they had last year - go to visit their Mum. But still, Fred wouldn't have gone. He figured Molly would have understood that he needed to stay beside his wife and more than a couple times during the day, he felt a hand on his shoulder when no one was in the room.
He was wished a Happy Birthday by his twin, and they really hadn't had any time for gifts, just being alive at this stage was gift enough. So they accepted each other's wishes, and those of Parvati, Neville and Ginny. But Fred still had one wish on his mind.
When all was quiet in the afternoon, he took Katie's hand in his and just stared at her grimly pale face and tried to stay the tears. "You know what love... today, would be a good day. I know I say that every day, but today would be a very good day to wake. So I could see your eyes and feel your hand on my face." As he said it, Fred moved Katie's hand across his cheek and pressed a small kiss to her knuckles. "It's our birthday, and I could think of no better gift than to have you back... I wouldn't ask for anything else, ever. I need you back Katie."
Fred's heart was sitting like an icy stone in his stomach. Every day he'd said the same words to her, and every day she just lay there, as if resting, but so so cold. He was shaking his head, only a dim hope remained within him that Katie could actually hear his words and feel his touch. But he needed to be closer to her, on that day of all days. So slowly, he laid down next to her and only held her hand against his chest, just beside his heart, trying to warm her... to bring her back
