[FIC] Your Worst-Kept Secret And Your Brightest Idea
Title: Your Worst-Kept Secret And Your Brightest Idea
Rating: probably about PG, maybe PG-13, for lots of champagne and mention of phone sex.
Prompt: Inspired both by Sue Bird/Diana Taurasi, secret lovers and I'll be your best-kept secret and your biggest mistake.
Disclaimer: Not mine. Not real. No harm meant. Please don't sue.
It only makes sense that Sue plays Diana a little more physically on defense than she does anyone else. The best way to knock Diana out of her comfort zone is with the body, throwing her off balance in more ways than one.
And if Sue's a little flushed after riding Diana's hip, breathing heavy and clutching her shorts- well, Diana Taurasi's one of the best offensive players in the game. Defending her is hard work, but who knows her better than her UConn teammate? Not Betty or Sheri, not Tully or Adia.
And if Diana's smiling- well, does Diana ever not smile?
On the bus back from the airport, while Sue's in the bathroom, Kamila leans across the aisle and asks quietly, "Do you think Sue is with that woman?"
"What woman?" Simone replies, though she can probably guess.
"From Phoenix. She guarded her."
"I think it's a good bet at some point in the last two years, they… met… sometime," Simone says carefully. Kamila looks at her, then shrugs.
The rest of the girls in the back laugh and grin as Simone explains, none of them hiding it very well, and Sue gets pissed when no one explains the joke after she comes back.
Sue's good at visualizing things; that's part of what makes her a natural point guard. So when she's alone, and the only thing of Diana's she has is Diana's voice, that's more than enough for her to make everything else about Diana real: her mouth, her hands, her breasts, her legs, every inch of her that Sue's come to know in the last four years.
And with Diana's dirty mind coming up with inventive ways to tease her, she loses herself easily in the fantasies, and hardly notices that the hands touching her aren't Diana's.
Not quite as before, but not so bad.
Loud, boisterous laughter- Geno knows how to throw a party, and Keesh hasn't forgotten the lesson. The beer is safe as can be with Lauren guarding it, Sheryl's enjoying her liberation from Scotty for the night, and Marie's a surprisingly racy dancer after three drinks.
Ruth weaves through the crowd until she finds Swin and extends her hand. Swin clasps it, and Ruth shakes her head. "You lost the bet. They couldn't resist. Ante up."
"Still can't believe they were that stupid," Swin grumbles, fishing around in her purse.
"How long have you known them? And their hormones?"
"Did they really think-"
"Think?"
Sometimes Diana kisses her in public, even if Sue keeps telling her no. But Diana does what Diana wants. "Big deal, I kissed Ann after the title," she says. "No one takes me seriously anyway," she says. "Why should it matter?" she says.
The excuses get worse and worse, and Sue's heart beats faster and faster. But the kisses get better and better, and Sue loses herself in them more and more, melting into the perfect curve of Diana's body. Sometimes Sue thinks this is what she was born for- not titles, accolades, or even basketball, but Diana's mouth, Diana's touch, Diana's love.
"Anyone seen Diana?" Cappie asks, her voice raw, frustrated, irritated.
"Try checking the Seattle locker room," Ann replies, sounding even more tired than her pale drawn face looks.
Cappie blinks for a moment, but just before Penny starts snickering, she says, "Oh, that That shit's still goin' on? Didn't think Diana could focus that long. I kinda thought you were hittin' that, no offense."
"So did I," Ann mutters, fully aware of who she is, who she's not, who Diana wants, who Diana needs.
"If you two won't do it, I'll go fetch her," Penny remarks, and she doubles back along the hallway.
This is going to get them caught, she knows it as surely as she knows her own name. This blog, with their casual comfort with each other, will give away how much they mean to each other, and it means so much to her that she pulls away, forces the entries to be more stilted and just scratch the surface of their friendship.
She doesn't expect Diana to get it, and especially not to play along. They work out elaborate codes and secret messages so that there's more in every line.
Someone might decode it. Somehow, she's not scared anymore that they will.
Everything's covered in champagne-coated plastic, or in the Mercury's case, just plain old champagne. Enough of it's been poured out and sprayed around that Dev looks like she's getting buzzed just from breathing.
Penny does not have two drinks. (She has three, at least until Snelly sneaks the other one out of her waistband.) Cappie has a drink in one hand and the MVP trophy in the other, and things get messy when she tries to show off her tattoo.
Kelly, pumped and psyched and leaning on Diana, might be the only one who hears Diana say triumphantly, "One up, Birdy, one up."
Sometimes she slips up, forgets that she's not in her little Russian bubble with Lauren and Diana where none of them hid anything from each other. It's a hard adjustment, but with Lauren's help, she makes it. She remembers not to turn around and ask Diana what they should have for dinner, remembers not to walk around the house without her clothes on, remembers that the bed will be empty when she goes to it and empty when she wakes up.
But she's done this before. She remembers. And Diana's just a phone call away, so it's almost okay, almost back to normal.
"I think I'm gonna barf," Candace mutters, because Sue and Diana are off in their own little world, and this is so not what they need when coming back from Beijing, with cameras waiting for every little movement.
"I think it's sweet," Sylvia says.
"I think anyone whose fiancé, husband, or baby daddy gets mentioned every damn game needs to shut up," Cappie says without looking at anyone in particular. Candace glowers, but Catch gives her a look and she subsides. People forget Catch was a Vol, except when she pulls out The Stare.
No one moves. Sue and Diana don't even notice.
