K’rin stretched, craned his neck to each side to crack it, and sighed in relief. He was back in his old position. No, better than his old position. Temporary, true, no matter what Weyrleader R’ger said. A blue rider wasn’t suited to keeping strict control over young dragons, especially not the higher colors. K’rin had a good handle on the vast majority of the greens and half of the blues, but there was nothing better than a brown or, better yet, a bronze to lead the class.
What sort of Weyrling Master needs constant help to keep his class under control? If R’ger didn’t find a replacement then K’rin might just have to resign at some point and force his hand. He didn’t want to do that, though. He genuinely liked the new Weyrleader as much as he harbored a deep dislike for the former. No matter what happened, he would always be grateful that R’ger has pulled him out of A’ver’s wing and given him space to breathe easy again. The past three days had been visibly difficult for R’ger, but K’rin felt better than he had in a long time. Kenzie was enjoying his mood, he was sure. They’d spent all of their free time together, and they’d had more than a few conversations about the declining mood of their mutual friend.
Imogen had been the logical person to send in and ferret R’ger out of his office. He wasn’t worried that she hadn’t managed to accomplish the task. She wanted him out and rested perhaps more than the rest of them combined and he’d never seen the bronze rider say no to anything she asked for. K’rin thought that might be a problem some day, but for the moment he was content to let her lead him by his hormones back to bed.
Speaking of. He turned and peered up at the hole in the wall of rock towering above that led to his weyr. Kenzie was still asleep. It wasn’t exactly late in the morning, but shed should have been up by now.
She is awake, Valoth informed him. She is eating.
He might as well go back up and join her. Valoth was well fed now and he was a Weyrling Master without a class. That had certainly made the handover of duties simple, he mused. Without youngsters to stay and watch over or fight with near the queens, he and Valoth were to join the Weyrleader’s wing. K’rin felt a thrill of childish glee over the idea that A’ver might take note. So much for remedial training.
He swung down from Valoth’s neck once they reached the weyr ledge and strode forward. Kenzie had apparently finished up and dressed. “We have a few hours until the show begins. What time do you have to be in the infirmary?” They both needed to report to their posts early to prepare for their roles in the upcoming Fall. But not quite yet.
