K’rin straightened from where he’d started to hunch over the green rider and squared his shoulders. “He has had a very long and thorough lecture. His progress with the rest of the wing has been set back several weeks and I will not be recommending he go to a lax wing. He will be placed somewhere where a firm winglead can manage him and help him better learn how actions affect others. Believe me,” he narrowed his eyes and lowered his chin, “T’sga is very well aware of what could have happened. Punishment is not yours to mete out, you are a weyrling and a green rider. Even graduated, Lyrra, you hold no rank and no right to start a fight. The dragons do not remember the bad things unless we force them to. It upsets them, and we should always think of them first. The dragons, Lyrra, not our own anger and need for vengeance. What does hitting T’sga do?” He turned and ran a hand down his face.
“The only thing this has done is cause the boy more injury, upset your beasts, and alerted me to the fact that maybe you aren’t one of my more stable riders. I can’t trust you in the air or with anything that might stress you out anymore. I trusted you to be a voice of reason in your class.” He sighed, shoulders slumping. “Accidents happen, Lyrra. Accidents by both negligence and pure chance. No one was mortally wounded and this sort of thing will continue to happen until your life comes to an end. It’s the nature of Fall and riding. If you continue to be this out of control every time someone makes a mistake you will not fly. The Weyr needs you but it will not risk its dragonpairs for your emotional outbursts. And if T’sga cannot learn, he won’t be fighting either.” He crossed his arms over his chest. “You’re grounded. I don’t want to see you back at drills until I can be sure you’ve moved past this.
“It might not seem fair,” he interrupted her when she opened her mouth to protest. “But you do need to move on. Dragonriders need to look forward. They need to stay focused on what is coming, how to better themselves next Fall. They do not need to be a constant reminder of the bad in life to their lifemates. Dragons are not as complex as we are, weyrling, they need us to guide them.”
