It was a dark and stormy night. She couldn’t sleep. She turned and looked at empty pillow next to her, he still wasn’t home, and she was beginning to worry. She prayed to whatever deity that would listen that tonight wasn’t the night his deception was discovered, that he would come home soon, alive.
Don’t wait up for me you need rest. Remember, I love you.
The last words he said to her before he kissed her and left. She just hoped they would not be his ‘final’ words to her. Hermione tossed and turned unable to still her mind and body long enough to slip into sleep.
This is futile, she thought as she got up and left the bedroom. She sat in his chair by the fire a cup of tea in hand and waited. Hermione had no idea how much time passed when the fire glowed green and the headmaster stepped through. She jumped to her feet and felt her heart jump to her throat.
“Headmaster, why… what…” she stammered a sense of dread coming over her.
“Hermione, you need to come to the Hospital Wing with me. Severus is back but…”
“No, please don’t tell me he’s…”
“He’s alive, but he’s been seriously injured.”
She turned to head to the door when the headmaster stopped her, “The Floo would be quicker, don’t you think?” He said as he led Hermione to the fire, tossed it in some Floo Powder, and voiced their destination. Hermione stepped out of the Floo into Madam Pomfrey’s office and out the door in search of her husband. Her eyes scanned around the room when she spotted a curtained off bed, as she stepped forward the headmaster, once again stopped her.
“Poppy will let us know when we can see him. Come, child, sit.” He said as he summoned a chair.
“What happened, Albus?”
“I’m not sure, but I believe Tom has discovered where Severus’ true loyalties lay or he at least suspects such.”
Poppy stepped out and went to where the headmaster and Hermione sat waiting. She was glad she didn’t have to tell Hermione her husband was dead.
“He’s going to be fine,” she said as she approached the pair, relief showing clearly on both their faces.
“However, he will be here for a while, he’s in a bad way still.”
“Can I go see him, Poppy?” said Hermione anxious to see her husband.
“Yes, he is sleeping though so try not to wake him.”
“I won’t. Thank you.” Hermione said and rapidly made her way to Severus.
Hermione spent the night sitting next to Severus just, watching him.
He woke just as the sun was rising and saw Hermione sitting there.
Silently, he thanked whatever God was responsible for sparing his life once again.
“Hermione.”
“Severus, I was so worried about you.”
“I’ll be fine, HE knows though. I can’t go back. We may have to into hiding, love.”
“We’ll do what we must, as long as we’re together.”
