RING!
Angie groaned and mumbled “It’s not time yet” as she heard a ring tone going off. She opened one eye to see Aaron still lying beside her, “Definitely not time yet.” So she decided to ignore it; softly kissing Aaron’s shoulder before trying to get back to sleep.
RING!
Angie ran her hand down her face. it was her stupid cell phone. She reluctantly turned away from Aaron and squinted at the motel’s bedside table. 6:30AM. Half an hour before they had to get up and the ringing was driving her insane. Glaring at the cell phone on the bedside table, she snatched it. Without looking at the ID, she mumbled:
“Hello?”
“Ange?!”
The voice was familiar, but still half asleep Angie couldn’t pin point it; she carefully sat up, looking back at Aaron, not wanting to disturb him. She heard her name again and it dawned, her jaw dropped.
“Patrick?” She whispered back.
“Well about time you stopped screening your calls.”
Still watching Aaron she frowned “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You know what that’s supposed to mean.” There was a pause “How are you?”
Angie sighed softly and realised she couldn’t hide from Patrick forever “Could you hold a sec?” Before he could answer, she placed her cell down and got up quietly looking around for her jersey that Aaron took off hours ago. She found it on the floor at his end and shoved it on. Walking back to where she placed her cell and picked it up, walking towards the bathroom, once she closed the door gently she answered “I’m fine.”
“Where are you?”
She shook her head; taking her time to answer “I’m around...”
Patrick sighed “You gotta be somewhere...it’s been two years, Ange, how do I know you’re okay?”
“You’re talking to me now aren’t you?” She sat at the edge of the bath “I sound fine, don’t I?”
“Ange...why don’t you just tell me?”
“Why don’t you just go with me? I’m fine emotionally and physically.”
“You’re not gonna tell me are you, Ange?”
“How’s Helene and Amanda? Here’d you and Helene were growing pretty close.”
Patrick was silent for a moment then smirked “You’re the one on crack, Angie, don’t even go there. And they’re fine, Amanda’s still with Helene.”
Angie stifled out a yawn “It won’t be long before Helene leaves Amanda alone again.”
“You’re full of bull you know that Ange? I’ve been babysitting Amanda if Helene goes to work. That kid’ll never be alone, not if I can help it.”
Angie looked at herself in the mirror, her eyes still baggy from her deep sleep “Patrick Kenzie babysitting ...never thought I’d see the day.”
Getting annoyed, “We talked about kids, remember, Ange?”
“I talked. You listened.” Angie stood up so her bum was no longer getting numb.
“Fine, whatever. But I listened closely and ended up thinking ‘hey, kids ain’t a bad idea.’”
Hearing his voice say those words made Angie’s heart tie up in double knots “You’re a bull-shitter, Kenzie. I gotta go.”
Patrick let out a loud groan “Fine, run away, that’s all you’re good at. Another two years, huh, Ange?”
Patrick beat Angie to hang up. She wanted to throw the cell; punch something out of frustration, but thinking of Aaron she stopped herself. Slowly and quietly opening the bathroom door, she made her way back to the bed and back to Aaron.
