As gas prices get higher and higher I find myself enjoying the fact I've never been one to drive cars more and more. Thank the Lord I can still ride a bike even with my bad knee!

Anyone around here going nuts over the gas prices?

You're lucky. Gas prices are nuts! I never had to deal with this shit in New York City, but now I commute to Princeville five times a week at least. It's insane. I had no idea. Although, I have to admit, even with the outrageous gas prices, it probably adds up to the same expenses as living in New York did.

Yeah? That's harsh. I'm glad I don't have to commute! Especially during the summer since school is out.

It's not a bad commute, but it sure would be without a car. Are you a teacher then, Sammy?

Yes! History teacher at the middle school.

So you mentioned you lived in New York? I'm afraid to say I've never been able to travel to the East Coast. Y'know, four other siblings, two middle class parents...would have cost too much.

And yet even as an adult I never made it over there. Always wanted to travel to New York, though. See the big city.

What a small world! My husband is a history teacher at KCC, and so is some Jia woman. This island is full of history teachers. What kind of history do you teach?

You have four siblings?! That's amazing. I'm an only child myself, and I always wanted to have a brother or sister.

New York is certainly a spectacle. None of the movies or books about it can do it justice. It's so big and varied. It's really the only city of its kind. You should make it out there at some point to see for yourself, but I'm not going to lie. It will put a dent in your checkbook!

World history in middle school, but I have a specialty in American history.

Yeah, and I'm the youngest. Thankfully though I don't have any really bad stories of torture and pranks. My siblings and I were all pretty close.

Figured as much! I'll have to think about it maybe next summer.

You have a specialty in American history, but you're teaching World history? How does that work out?

That sounds idyllic. Didn't I mention somewhere that you're lucky?

If you go, you can always hit me and TJ up for insider information. We know all the hot spots, or at least, we did.

Because they needed a world history teacher and not an American history one? I can't complain all that much because I'm just glad I have a job.

Haha, I'm not sure. But I know I'm lucky. I just wish I could get my siblings to move closer! Everyone but the twins are still in Cali, last I checked.

That makes sense. Being employed trumps doing what you want. I'm directing community theater for a change of pace instead of acting in Times Square.

California isn't too far from here is it?

You're and actress? Very nice. Been in anything big?

Not too far, but I'd rather they live a couple houses down, not across the Pacific.

I am an actress. I've done a lot of theater work in NYC. My first big break was in Mamet's Oleanna. The other plays were more independent, and I had a short stint on ER years ago.

Any chance that they'll make the move?

That's neat.

Probably not, even if they'd like to. Maybe one day, though.

I have a car but I rarely drive it unless I'm going to some other part of the island. I'm very grateful that Hanalei is small enough that I can walk anywhere I need to go!

Gas prices are outrageous! I'm another that has to commute to Princeville for work. It's necessary though so I just deal with it.

I don't have much occasion to drive my car either, as I pretty much spend my days at the beach. Gas prices are verging on the ridiculous now though from what I can tell, not that I have a right to be complaining.

I think even those of us who don't drive cars can still appreciate the sheer insanity of gas prices. You are lucky you get to spend your days at the beach. What do you do?

You make a very good point, dude. I suppose since I spend so much money on extravagant things like food, clothes, and sunglasses, adding the occasional gas tank shouldn't be too bothersome to me though. :/

Do? Well, I'm currently a lifeguard here while trying to find my inspiration for a third poetry book. It's a long story. Really. What about you?

Yeah.

Nice. I'll keep an eye out for you if I ever end up drowning. However, I'm just a History teacher at the local middle school.

I shouldn't be that hard to spot. Look for the dude with the red trunks, intensely mimicking David Hasselhoff and pretending to run in slow motion. That's the X man.

A history teacher sounds way more exciting, honestly.

Ha! Cool.

Being a teacher can be exciting sometimes but...most of the time it's rather monotonous.

I never even learned to drive. Always got rides back home, and here I can walk anywhere. Though, personally, I think I'd look pretty darn good on a moped.

Ooh, I love mopeds! And I bet you'd look splendid. I'm always amused, however, by the larger people who are on tiny mopeds...

Perhaps that's a bit insensitive of me but I can't help it!
