Evan fucking Elkins. ([info]chaseme) wrote in [info]badwater_rpg,

Entry tags:emily cauldwell, evan elkins, january, phonecall, rated r

Who: Evan and Emily
What: Drunk-dial from Emily, which results in Evan driving to her house (phonecall and thread)
Where: Emily's apartment
When: Monday Night
Rated: Who knows?

Evan shut his phone and pocketed it, giving a grin as the door cracked and finally opened. A wave of warmth hit him and he waved his hand behind him to let his driver know it was alright to leave.

"Can I come in?" He asked, squinting one eye against the light pouring out from inside. "It's fucking freezing out here." He crossed his arms over his chest and gave his best smile. He knew she wasn't exactly happy with him, but she was drinking alone and that was unhealthy, unsafe and just plain pathetic. Though, to be fair, she had just been dumped and lied to by two men she had once trusted. And the replacement girl wasn't exactly prized material. Evan could understand her feeling low in the self esteem department.

"You look nice," he added.

Emily frowned at her ex-boyfriend as she pulled open the door to let him in. "Shut up," she muttered to his compliment, shutting the door behind him. "I really don't need anymore lies from you." Emily was currently donning sweat pants and a t-shirt, with no make-up and her hair up in a pony tail. She knew full well she didn't look attractive with eyes slightly puffy and red from crying and alcohol on her breath.

"What're you doing here, anyway? I don't need you checking up on me."

"Clearly," Evan rolled his eyes and stepped inside as she shut the door. He took a quick glance around the place, quirking his eye at the litter of bottles; all of the alcoholic variety. "Thirsty?"

His gaze fell back on his ex-girlfriend. For the record, she didn't need to be wearing fancy clothes and make-up to be beautiful to him. Emily was beautiful inside and out, something he hardly noticed with girls. She didn't need to impress him. He was already impressed.

"Whatever you say, doll." He walked further inside and sunk down on her sofa. He'd been there many times when they'd dated. It almost felt like home. Almost. The thought that Gabe had sat in the same seat that he was sitting pissed him off. But it didn't matter anymore. Gabe was long gone.

"What have you been doing, besides drowning your sorrows in seventy proof liquor?"

Emily and Gabe had done a lot more than sitting on that couch, actually, and the thought made Emily both blush and grimace. Her gaze fell upon Evan sitting there, and with a sigh, she flopped down ungracefully next to him. "I threw away his sweatshirt," she answered, frowning. "And I'm going to pawn the earrings he gave me. I should be able to get a decent amount for them."

If Evan had known that, he probably would have grimaced as well. And refused to ever sit on the couch again, but that's beside the point.

"Good. We could have had a ritual burning, but throwing it away is probably healthier." He grinned and leaned his head back to look up at the ceiling.

She was going to pawn his earrings? Evan wondered briefly if she did the same with the gifts that he had given her. They were some pretty expensive things. But it was only brief before the thought left him. Money mattered not to Evan. Go figure.

"Knowing Gabe, he probably bought them at a pawn shop to begin with," he snorted, holding his laughter back.

"I bet he's looking for it everywhere like an idiot. He doesn't have the balls to come and ask me if he left it here." Though she would, all things considered, enjoy explaining where exactly his sweatshirt had gone.

She snorted softly at his assessment. "True. I bought him an iPod, too." She frowned. "I found the note he gave me with them, too. He fed me so much crap." She flopped over on the couch, letting her head sit in his lap as she looked up at ceiling rather than at him. Drinking always made Emily more touchy-feely, and oblivious of personal space. "Do you know I told him to go back to Alena once?" she said, tensing at the memory. "And he made such a big fucking scene about how he didn't want her. A month later he can't live without her. Fucking knight and shining armor complex. If I could be in life-threatening situations, we'd probably still be together, but nooo. Alena goes into a coma and gets Gabe. Emily gets to live forever and spend eternity alone. Lucky me!"

"Probably," Evan grinned, secretly hoping it was Gabe's favorite sweatshirt. The jackass deserved it. "Alot of people feed alot of crap. Take it from me, Gabe was definitely slinging shit. I just wish I could have warned you. Not that I'm a very...believable source; hell, you probably would have told me to fuck off." He shrugged, absently touching her hair. It was the best comforting gesture he knew of. And with her head in his lap, it made it easy. His eyes remained on the ceiling as well, though.

"He needs to be needed, and Alena is fucking needy."

Emily reached blindly for a bottle on the coffee table, but was disappointed to find it empty as she raised it before her face. She hadn't had the entire bottle. She had merely finished it off. And had a pretty decent taste of the rest of the bottles littered around her apartment. Sighing, she let it fall to the floor.

"You did warn me," she groaned. "That's what sucks so bad. Before I started dated with him. Something about Alena and cake. I yelled at you, I think." She couldn't help but smile faintly at that. "I yell at you a lot, huh? I bet I'm the only one who ever has."

"Well, you and my father," he answered seriously. "You two keep my on my toes." It was true. Without his father, he'd be nowhere; no one. Without Emily...he didn't know what he'd be. But it definitely wasn't who he was today.

"Fuck Gabe and fuck Alena. Those two deserve each other, if you ask me. They're both fuck ups, and they're both social outcasts. Alena's nothing special, and I'm not just telling you that to make you feel better. It's the truth."

Emily looked to him, alarmed as she was compared with his father. "I'm not like your dad," she told him. "I don't like how alike you two are. It's scary." Evan's dad was not a nice person, and Evan's constant seeking of approval made her sick. What kind of father made their child feel so unloved? He was such a cold man, and Emily might very well have hated him for it.

"I couldn't even get the fuck up!" she moaned, glancing to her right to spot his hoodie pocket. This caused a change in mood for her, apparently. She slipped her hand through one side, grinning as it came out the other end. She wiggled her fingers for a moment, before withdrawing it to draw concentric circles upon his knee. "Why do boys lie?" she asked, her finger still tracing its designs. "Why do you lie? You could have actually just... been the better person instead of pretending to be. Minus the whole being Dylan's boyfriend, which was totally stupid, by the way." And she was off rambling now, switching to draw her target on the other knee. "Why would you pretend to date Dylan to get me back? I mean, sure the whole friends thing was good until it blew up in everyone's face, but kissing him? You're totally not gay. I mean, I guess you could be, but I have a pretty good gaydar, and you never sent mine off. Course you could have been lying since you do that a lot. Are you gay? No, definitely not." Pause. "Are you?"

"He's not scary, he just doesn't know how to show affection. Being tough on me has shaped me to be strong. That's the only way he knew how to raise me. I mean, my mom wasn't there...so..." He drifted off, not wanting to bring up the fact that his mom was dead. It wasn't something he normally talked about. It wasn't that it hit any nerves-- sure he would have liked to have a mother growing up, but he didn't. Instead, he had a series of women who pretended to care what he did while simultaneously spending his father's fortune on frivolous luxuries before Charles kicked them to the curb. Evan's mother, from what he could remember, had been a loving woman. But he was only five when she died. He didn't miss her that much.

"You're better than that, Emily. Gabe is--" He was cut off by her reaching her hands in his hoodie. He grinned, noting how cute it was that she was so entertained. Of course, that had to do a great deal with the amount of alcohol she had retained. But still.

His demeanor changed, however, when she mentioned Dylan. His plan had backfired. It was a touchy subject.

"I wasn't trying to be his boyfriend. The kiss was an act of desperation. He was starting to...I don't know. Trust me, I'm not gay. Fucking far from it. If anything, kissing Dylan solidified that notion. Look, by pretending to be the better person, I was actually becoming a better person. Dylan just...he's not stable. He's not a good person. He's insane."

"He is scary," she retorted, pouting. "He never liked me, and he certainly never liked me once I got my ability. He probably thinks I'm dangerous for you. Nevermind that I saved your life. He wasn't even grateful. Jerk." She looked over at him. "Did it leave a scar?" she asked suddenly.

Emily was, needless to say, relieved to hear she hadn't dated a gay man. That was, quite frankly, the last thing she needed at this point. A gay man who had been proclaiming his love for her. Awesome. "But then you ruined it all. You went back to being spiteful and mean, and so did Dylan. I know he's not a good person. I tried to help, and if he just goes back to how he was that quick, it's pretty obvious he never really changed at all." And the talk of Dylan reminded her of her confrontation with Alena, which of course, had her both mortified and furious and broken-hearted all at the same time.

"Ughhh. You know what pisses me off? Everyone is on their side. No one thinks it's the least bit fucked up that he fucked her less than twenty-four God damn hours after leaving me on the fucking beach."

"Don't say that. He likes you." Evan wasn't entirely sure this was true. In fact, he was pretty positive the exact opposite was the truth. Charles had, on several occasions, told Evan to forget about Emily; that she was bad for him. Course, he was only referring to Evan's feelings for the girl, but nonetheless. "He was grateful."

As for the scar, he didn't. It had healed cleanly. "Nope. No scar. Want to see?" He carefully stripped off his hoodie and lifted his wife beater just far enough to reveal the place he'd been shot. Right in the chest. "Clean. Thanks to you."

He grinned and dropped his shirt back down. The sweatshirt, he tossed aside. Hopefully she wouldn't throw it away. He needed it later when he left. Course, by the looks of things, she was far too wasted to let sleep alone. He was probably going to spend the night on her sofa.

"Of course everyone is on their side, Em. Look at them all and look at you. You're ten times more gorgeous, intelligent, athletic and nice than any of them. They're friends with them, for fuck's sake. I'd say you come off as quite a threat to them all. Can't die, can't feel pain. Friends with Dylan and me. I mean. You're fucking fabulous. They're just jealous."

Emily sat up as he took off his sweat shirt, almost managing to feel awkward with him half-naked while her head was in his lap, almost. Her head tilted to the side as she examined his unflawed skin. He had a nice chest. And nice abs. And nice shoulders, which remained uncovered thanks to his only having a wifebeater on. Seeing as she didn't have a boyfriend anymore, it wasn't wrong to ogle, though perhaps the fact that she was supposed to be angry at him probably meant she should avoid doing so. Ah well, Emily's hazy mind never considered it, and she was slow to drag her gaze back up to his face. "I don't have any either. I mean, even when I fell and my knee popped out of my skin. No scar- though I could still feel pain then. Hurt like a bitch."

"Are we friends?" she asked, apparently not noticing his earlier compliments. "I mean, I shouldn't even be talking to you right now because I'm supposed to be pissed off at you for being such a jerk. And I'm always mad at you, or you're mad at me, and you're always claiming to be in love with me, and I don't think we've ever been friends. You can't be friends with someone you haven't gotten over." And now the question that must have popped into his head: Was she talking about Evan? Or herself?

He ignored her prior statement about her scars and her knee. He didn't really care about that, though, he wasn't exactly sure what fall she was talking about. The fact that she had hurt herself that much and she'd not told him about it slightly worried him, but at least she could heal now. And at least she never had to hurt again. Still, the thought didn't really ease Evan. But it didn't matter. She was talking about feelings.

"Us? Friends? I hope so. I mean, how many people can fight as much as us and still be on speaking terms. I wouldn't be here if we weren't at least friends." He cared about her, that much was true.

And yes, that question did pop into his head. But he wasn't about to ask her. Perhaps in her state, she'd volunteer the information herself. But he felt guilty asking her himself. Especially when he was trying to make things work with Rebecca. He wasn't in love with her and she wasn't Emily, but he owed her a chance. And Emily didn't really want him. She was just drunk.

"I think you need some water." His hand went back to her hair.

"You're here because you've convinced yourself you're in love with me," she explained as if it were common knowledge. "You still don't understand- and I can't for the life of me believe you've held on this long- that you only want me because you can't have me and that the second you had me back you'd realize it was all for nothing because it was all just the thrill of the chase." She chuckled. "Which is kinda funny since you run really fast. I liked running with you on water. Until you pushed me in. That was impolite."

Water. Emily was drunk, which she was, yes, aware of, and she was pretty sure she should be drinking water, but that would require movement, and Evan's lap was shockingly comfortable and perhaps familiar. Turning on her side slightly so that her cheek rested against her sweatpants, she stared at the picture frames on her wall, one of which was now empty, thanks to her split with Gabe. "We were pretty good together, I thought. You didn't. You found someone prettier, and I was nothinggg. I think you got that from your dad. Either way, you'll find someone prettier again when you graduate. You'll be fine."

"I didn't appreciate what I had and I took you for granted." It was one of Evan's regrets. Sure, when he dumped her, he'd taken great pleasure in bringing women by her coffee shop just to show them off. But once he realized how much she actually meant to him, he kicked himself for every time he humiliated her. Apparently, he really had changed. Too bad no one believed him.

"I'm paying the price now, I suppose." He wasn't with her, after all. He doubted whether he'd ever be with her again. Following advice from his friend, Evan was no longer persuing Emily. Though, obviously, his current position on her couch contradicted that. Still, he did have Rebecca waiting for him somewhere, and he wasn't about to blow that. Settling was something he'd never have to do before. It was a humbling experience to say the least.

"I think I peaked when I dated you, honestly. I'm not sure I can get prettier."

Emily had to readjust just as soon as she'd gotten comfortable to look up at him. He was always saying those kinds of things while they had been dating. She'd loved him for it, really. What kind of girl didn't like getting compliments from her boyfriend?

Her lips quirked up in a small smile as she gazed at him, slightly bleary-eyed. "That was sweet," she murmured, placing a hand on his chest over his heart, smile widening ever so slightly as she felt its steady beat under her fingertips. "You don't have to be here."

Evan looked down at her hand on his chest. It was so small, so fragile. He just wanted to scoop her up, tell her he loved her and make sure nothing bad ever happened to her again. But he didn't. And he wouldn't. Instead, his gaze lingered just a second longer on her slender fingers before glancing down at her face. She was smiling. That was a good sign.

"I worry about you," he answered softly. "When you fall asleep, I'll carry you to your room and I'll sleep out here." There was no need for her to be alone. What if she needed to throw up? He would gladly hold her hair back.

"Don't worry about me," she mumbled, reaching behind him to grab the blanket on the back of the couch, draping it over herself. "I can't get hurt, remember?" Well, not physically at least. Her state of mind this evening clearly showed she was quite vunerable mentally and emotionally.

"Remember that day in the alley behind the coffee shop?" she asked after a moment's pause, her voice quiet and sleepy. She was speaking, of course, of when Evan had come back from the dead and showed up at her work to scare the living daylights out of her. "I'm sorry I didn't kiss you back. I wanted to." She let out a quiet yawn as she shifted her position slightly. "I'm sorry I'm so mean to you."

Her reassurance about getting hurt didn't make Evan feel any better. If it was supposed to, he didn't know. But it didn't. He was always going to worry about her. It was just who he was now.

He nodded when she asked if he remembered. He remembered it well. The whole time he'd been in a coma the only thing he remembered was thinking of her. And when he'd finally woken up, his father wouldn't let her see her. He'd had to sneak out to visit her and thank her and let her know he was alive. And she'd been...less than happy to see him.

"No you didn't, but it's alright. You're not mean to me. You're just acting the way you think you should." He hadn't exactly treated her right in the past. Who could blame her for being suspicious of him?

Emily laughed a bit too loud at that. "I'm pretty sure the one thing I never do around you is act the way I think I should." Evan was really good at making her act like an irrational idiot, actually. Right now, for example, she was laying with her head in his lap when she was supposed to be furious with him.

"Can I kiss you now?"

Evan opened his mouth to say something, but nothing came out. In fact, a major battle was going on inside his head. Part of him wanted to grab her face and smash their lips together. He'd wanted it for so long, and here it was literally laying in his lap. But, the other part...the part that knew he should be a good boyfriend, that Emily was just drunk and would regret it...that part won. Unfortunately for Evan.

"I don't think you want to, Em."

Emily yawned. While Emily did, in fact, want to kiss him, it probably wouldn't have been very enjoyable, what with her being drunk and half asleep. She was easily swayed in her current state, so she shrugged slightly, looking sleepily up at him, before letting them droop closed. Even so, she kept talking to him. "You're not going to leave are you? I don't want to be alone."

"I'll stay," Evan said, just as sleepily. It was getting late and even if he wasn't tired, he wouldn't feel comfortable leaving her alone in her current state.

"Alright, gimme just a minute." He left the room only for a brief minute, returning with a water bottle and a jar of aspirin which he placed dutifully on her bedside table. She was going to need them in the morning, and she'd be grateful to know she won't have to get out of bed to get them. He smiled at the notion of actually doing right by her for once as he climbed onto the opposite side of the mattress.

"Big spoon or little spoon?" As if he needed to ask. His arm, lean but strong, snaked around her waist and he snuggled up to her back. "Not too warm, right?"
