Who: Marlie Loke, Alena Alkeinos, and Gabe Sherlock
When: During/after the memorial on Saturday
Where: The streets of Bristol and Cookie's Bakery
What: Burn cruisin' - dealing with shit is easier when you've got friends and pot.
Rating:
R for profanity, drug references, and the operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence. Don't try this at home, kids.

The window was cracked in January, and it was an indication of how stoned Gabe was that he allowed this. It was also necessary, because otherwise the car would've been so smoky he wouldn't have been able to see out the windshield. Stoned or not, he was still probably the safest bet for driver, because Alena and Marlie were pretty baked as well, with Gabe driving and Marlie in the passenger seat and Alena stretched out in the backseat of the car.

Gabe was in a considerably better mood than he had been earlier. They hadn't actually made it inside of the memorial service - Marlie and Alena because they couldn't handle it, and Gabe because he couldn't deal with being around so many depressed people. Two people were easier to cheer up than all of those who found themselves at Cookie's service, and Gabe personally thought that pot was a better pick-me-up than macaroni casserole. They'd stopped off at Gabe's apartment to pick up his stash instead, and a little while later, he found himself driving down the streets of Bristol in a stocking cap, gloves, and a suit, the tie of which was long discarded somewhere toward the back, leaving it in the dubious care of Alena. The radio was tuned to some hip-hop station, and Gabe was currently singing along loudly with "No Air" - Jordin Sparks's part, in a dramatic falsetto complete with hand gestures.

It was amazing, to Marlie, how good laughing could feel when a person hadn’t been able to in quite some time. True, she was stoned, but…whatever worked. It had taken her some time to let herself completely relax, even as she took the first couple of hits from the joint that they had rolled, because part of her kept thinking that this was totally the wrong thing to be doing. Was it selfish of them, to be smoking pot? Everyone else had been able to pull themselves together, to go inside that church and pay their respects to Naomi Corinne "Cookie" Lee…but then again, they hadn’t witnessed what had happened. They hadn’t been there when she died…they hadn’t seen what Asher and Grant had done, and how much they had enjoyed it. Well…most of them, anyway. Angie had, and she still managed to walk inside. But then again, Angie probably didn’t have weed…

Maybe they should have invited her. Heh.

As soon as Chris Brown started to sing, Marlie chimed in, singing as low as she could to match his pitch and tone. The sad part was, they didn’t even sound as bad as they could have. Aside from Marlie’s random giggling, she stuck to the part of Chris Brown pretty well. When the song was over, she leaned back in her seat, and then turned around to face Alena, laughing a little bit. “We should start a musical group…we could be like… ‘Out-of*sync’ or something…” She giggled at her own joke and then turned around to look out of her window. “Where are we?”

Alena was in the backseat of the car still trying to tie Gabe's tie that he'd abandoned around her neck, really wishing that she'd actually learned how to do so before now. In the end she'd ended up just somehow getting it into a knot around her neck and would have fun trying to get out of it later. Her gaze moved from the roof of the car to the back of Marlie's head, snorting as Gabe tried to hit a particularly high note and failed horribly. Through out the duration of the song she'd taken to trying to imitate the actual music of the song seeing as Chris and Jordin in the front seat had the vocals covered. Pretty far gone herself she'd make a random facial expression as Marlie looked back at her, laughing loudly at her friend's suggestion she'd she'd sit up and pull the hood of Gabe's that she'd stolen from his apartment up, nearly covering her eyes. "Dude! I've still got my copy of Darren's dance moves on VHS at my house! It's so done!"

She pulled the side of that hood away from her face to look out that back window. "Well I'd say we are somewhere downtown by now because there was a Mighty Taco, and the bank... and City Hall should be up here on the right." She rattled on for a moment before becoming acutely aware of the song that had just started playing on the radio. The opening cbeat to Justin Timberlake's Lovestoned/I Think She Knows Interlude had started causing her to jettison forward, wedging her upper body between Gabe and Marlie while leaving her legs in the back seat. She quickly turned up the volume just in time to vocalize along with her beloved JT. "Uhhhn. She's freaky and she knows it! She's freaky and I like it!" Alena started giggling once more and she curled her arms over her head, laughing into the sleeves of that hoodie as she stayed in that awkward position.

Gabe groaned, grinning over his shoulder at Alena. "Fucking Darren! He goes too fast, I still can't get Bye Bye Bye down. Out of sync is fuckin' right. We'd have you and me tripping over each other during the choreography," he said to Marlie. "Give me a DDR dance pad and I can figure it out, but fuck Darren."

Alena reached forward to turn up Justin Timberlake, and Gabe rolled his eyes. "And fuck Justin Timberlake, too!" Despite that sentiment, the smile stayed on his face, and he impulsively hooked an arm up and around Alena's shoulders, pulling her close to kiss the top of her head covered by his hoodie that she was practically swimming in, before returning his hands to the wheel. It felt like they hadn't hung out for a while, the three of them. Gabe and Alena's relationship problems seemed to have gotten in the way, and it was a shame. This reminded him of joking around when they were all in high school, of days when they hadn't had to worry about superpowers and people around them being murdered.

"No. You just suck." She interjected into his words doing that little laugh of hers that sounded like Dr. Claw's cat from Inspector Gadget. Her thoughts turned to the day she'd gotten that video for her birthday from her father's mother, she and Gabe had smoked while watching the entire thing. It really hadn't been that funny but in their intoxicated state hadn't been able to stop obssessing over the guy on the far left's face as he danced.

"Don't talk about JT like that!" She shouted into those sleeves and froze up a bit when he pulled her towards him and kissed the top of her head. Alena had a tendency to over-think and over-analyze things when she was stoned and didn't really know how to react to that. If nothing else it made her think back to Friday morning and what had transpired between Gabe in herself, which only made her think of what had happened in the past week. They were out getting high while every one else they knew were at Cookie's memorial. She didn't know if they had done the right thing, didn't know what to think about her relationship with Gabe, didn't know anything except the fact that she did not want to be thinking about this now.

"Marlie! Move over!" She shouted in an obnoxiously low voice as she quickly pushed those thoughts aside. Without giving any warning as to what she was doing, Alena pulled back and they'd see a burgandy Doc Marten come flying between them a second later as she clambored over the middle console and didn't sit next to Marlie, but on top of her. "Hi." Holding back laughter she'd smile at her friend who's lap that she was now sitting on and her hands would find their way to play with Gabe's tie once more. "Do you know how to tie ties?" She'd ask innocently enough before bursting out laughing as she held out the horrible mess she'd made of that strip of fabric.

Her hands had been brought up to cover her face as she giggled, just imagining Gabe trying to follow along to Darren’s Dance Moves, only to throw a tantrum, complaining that the guy was moving too quickly for him to for him to get the foot movements of that complicated box step. “We…totally would…” she managed to get out between laughs, when he directed his words at her. “Who needs choreography anyway? Psssssh!” She waved her hand in a dismissive manner, curling up on the chair. A squeak was let out as Gabe took his eyes off the road, but she calmed down almost immediately when he took control of the wheel again.

Alena’s orders caused her to raise her brows, looking around to see if there was any place for her to move over. There wasn’t. Well, okay, there was a bit of room because Marlie was extremely small and didn’t take up the entire seat, but there wasn’t enough room for a second person! Not that that ever stopped Alena. When she turned back and saw her awkwardly climbing into the front seat, she gawked at her, letting out an ‘oof’ as Alena plopped down on top of her. “Good God, you are such a cow!” The words were accompanied by a light shove, and a laugh, letting her know she was just kidding with her. Her eyes traveled down to the tie she was speaking about, snorting at the mess she had made. “Alena…did you do this with your eyes closed?” Once again, she laughed. “My Dad taught me…or, no, my Mom did, so I could tie my Dad’s. Gimme!” She wiggled her fingers at Alena, waiting for her to hand over the tie. Once it was in her hands, she pathetically tried to unknot it, giving a dramatic groan as she threw her head back. “This is impossible!” Huffing, and then giggling, she went back to trying to get the knot out…only to be distracted as she glanced out of the window. Her face dropped, and she stared at the building in the distance, shifting beneath Alena. “Gabe…pull over.” Her voice was much quieter now, but still audible…even over Justin Timberlake.

Despite his confusion, Gabe listened to her request, and pulled the car to the curb. Marlie opened the door, and very awkwardly scooted herself out from beneath her friend, almost falling out of the car. If that wasn’t bad enough, she nearly twisted her ankle because her heel got caught. “Fucking…shoes.” She murmured, taking both of the shoes off. She hooked them on her fingers. She was wearing a pair of stockings, so she wasn’t completely barefoot, but it was way too cold to be walking around without shoes on. She really didn’t even seem to notice the cold, though.

She was just focused on the Bakery.

Gabe leaned away from them slightly as Alena clambered into the front seat, so they wouldn't jostle him while he was driving, laughing at Alena and Marlie struggling with his tie. He had issues with ties himself, and he had to wear one every day for work.

Marlie's tone abruptly changed, and he pulled over as per her request, watching her get out of the car and take off her heels then start walking toward...the bakery. Shit. What is she doing? he thought, just staring after her for a moment. When it finally registered in his sluggish brain what was going on, he scrambled to turn off the car and get out, jogging to catch up with her. "What are we doing, Marlie?" he asked warily. The last thing they needed was to have anybody having flashbacks or whatever upon a return to the scene of the crime. Just looking at the place made Gabe tense up a bit - as much as was possible after so much weed, anyway.

"Dude, I told you at the concert- I store extra food for the winter in my ass." Somehow while waiting for Anberlin's set Alena's ass had come up in conversation with some random guy they had been talking to. The guy had been a little creepy and kept edging toward's Marlie, thankfully their rambunctiousness had sent him off to look for someone else to potentially molest. She'd hand the tie over to Marlie and patiently waited for the death tie, as she taken to refering to it in her mind, to become untied. "No, my eyes were open but I wasn't looking." She admitted with a shrug, laughing at her friend's futile attempts at undoing that knot. When Marlie told Gabe to pull over she didn't realize where they were and went to work herself for a few moments, digging her nails into the fabric... it was when Gabe got out of the car that she actually realized where they were.

Getting out of the car really didn't even occur to her, she didn't want too, but found herself getting out and shut the door behind her before walking over to were her friends stood. The mood had suddenly soured as they all looked at the Bakery that had once been Cookie's. As it was right now it looked did on any weekend around noon, with it's closed sign prominently displayed in the window... but she couldn't help but think that she'd never think of it as just that again. Gripping the unzipped edges of that hoodie Alena would pull it tightly around her, tucking her hands under her elbows. "Fucking assholes." She muttered under her breath as she set her jaw and shivered slightly, knowing full and well it wasn't the chilly air that was making her do so. "I wonder what they're gonna do with the place." Alena said aloud to no one in particular, trying to find someway to avoid the thoughts that were clearly on everyone's minds.

Her attention shifted to Gabe once she stopped walking. Keep your chin up. The thoughts were accompanied by a sad smile before she looked over to Alena. She let out a quiet hum, knowing exactly who Alena was talking about, without even having to read her mind. “Yeah…” She said before sighing, turning back to look at the Bakery. It seemed so…cold. They couldn’t smell any cookies, or muffins, or anything like that anymore. It was enough to make Marlie frown. “Whatever they do with it….it won’t be the same, will it?” The question wasn’t directed at either of them, since it was rather rhetorical. Even in her state of mind, the sight of the building caused memories of what she had seen happen inside to flash into her head, but as soon as she blinked and looked over to Gabe, they went away.

“I want to go inside.” She didn’t even wait for a response, and just started walking towards the door, her words carrying back to Gabe and Alena as she looked over her shoulder at them. “You don’t have to come, if you don’t want to.” Turning around, she looked at the building again. This was the last place she was when she was alive… I think she’d want her friends to be happy at the Bakery instead of crying in a church. She always liked making people happy. Yeah. This is…this is alright. She’s still here. She’ll always be at the Bakery. By now, she was at the front door. It was still off its hinges, and the sign on the door was flipped over to read ‘Sorry, we’re CLOSED!’ Marlie sighed before she looked around, and then attempted to move the door…only to have it fall with a very loud crash. “…crap.” After that had happened, she managed to step inside without tripping on the door, taking in her surroundings.

Once again, everything played back in her mind, figuring out just where everyone was when all of this happened. Her attention focused on one spot on the floor in particular; the place where Cookie had been. Swallowing roughly, she moved there. Her shoes were still in her hand as she stared at the tiles, biting at the inside of her lip.

Gabe rubbed his eyes, staring at the empty building. It wouldn't be the same. Even if some other baker bought it and kept the name Cookie's Bakery and made the exact same stuff...it wouldn't be Cookie's bakery. She wouldn't be there to call you 'sweetheart' and ask how you're doing and about all the latest gossip...and Gabe would never be able to pass it without thinking about her death. It was where he'd seen a friend die, where he'd realized who he cared about more than anything in the world, and found out what he was willing to do for her.

That thought prompted him to look over at that person, standing next to him shivering in his sweatshirt. He didn't want Marlie to go in there alone, but he didn't want to leave Alena out here. Gabe knew it would be hard for her, but maybe if he and Marlie were there... He offered Alena his hand, looking at her questioningly. No pressure.

"Nah... won't be." She was only vaguely aware of the two other's presence for that moment as she peered into the small shop window and stared at the counter that Asher had been leaning against when she had first walked out from the back. It wasn't until Marlie had stated that she wanted to go inside that she realized she'd been holding her breath. "What?" An incredulous look was shot towards the younger girl who was already making her way inside the bakery. Jumping slightly when the door fell right off it's hinges into the shop she'd continue to look after Marl until she heard Gabe's voice in her head.

Turning to look at him and his outstretched hand she'd offer a tightlipped smile. Yeah, no pressure. The thought wasn't actually directed towards him, but she was sure he had picked up on it. "It's not like I was gonna let her go in there alone." She hadn't been planning on going in at all, but didn't want to sound like some whiney baby or the likes. So instead she would kick up that little act of hers a notch for a moment, but it quickly faded away when she took his hand. Alena moved closer to Gabe, nearly leaning into him as they made their way into the backery.

Once inside her eyes flit around to where everyone had been standing Tuesday afternoon before coming to rest where Marlie was already standing. She moved further into the shop, still holding tightly onto Gabe's hand as she came to stand by Marlie's side. Almost instinctually she'd wrap her free hand around her friend's torso, pulling her to her side for a hug. The thought that she might not have wanted hadn't really occured to her, seeing as she did this for her own benfit as much as Marlie's. Alena took a deep breath. She was right there, and I was right next to her. And then Angie was there... She didn't even need to turn around and look at the rest of the store to be able to pick out the exact spots where Asher and Grant had stood. Alena noticed a small brown stain on the floor and would break away from both Gabe and Marlie, crouching down she'd rest her elbows on her knees as she stared intently at the spot wondering if it was what she thought it was. The longer she looked at it, the more she was sure that it was dried blood. A hand came to absently rub her filtrum and then mess with her nose ring. "That's mine." She said matter of factly as she moved even futher to sit on the floor, her knees to her chest as she wrapped her arms around them.

She didn’t look over as Gabe and Alena entered the bakery, but just stood where she was, remembering the exact position Cookie had been in when she was at that exact spot. Her concentration was focused in on those tiles beneath her, and didn’t snap out of her daze until Alena hugged her. She didn’t mind at all, that her friend had pulled her close in a comforting embrace. Marlie leaned against her and wrapped her own arm around Alena, sighing lightly. Her voice didn’t seem to be working at the moment. All three of them seemed to have nothing to say, until Alena pulled away and moved over to where she had been on Tuesday. Her words drew Marlie’s attention, and she moved closer to her friend, staring down at the spot of blood.

Swallowing roughly, Marlie crouched down beside her friend, holding onto her knees as her skirt brushed against the floor. Eventually, Marlie sat as well, crossing her legs as she kept her eyes focused on the brown blotch. “…at least it isn’t much….?” Her words were intended to be optimistic, but she was 99% certain they hadn’t helped at all. “Ar-…are you going to be alright?” Her voice was quiet, basically a whisper, her large blue eyes looking a bit sad, as well as apologetic as she looked over to Alena. “We can leave now, if you want… I’m sorry I went in. I just…I don’t know. I felt like I needed to be here, one last time…before they changed everything…”

Gabe stood silently behind where Alena sat. It was the spot where he'd knelt beside her and begged her to wake up, then stood up and almost become a murderer. He'd relived it all too much last night, and didn't examine the spot of blood, instead looking around at the counters, a few boxes that he supposed had been Alena's baked goods that were on the floor nearby.

He shoved his hands in his pockets, looking down at the girls on the floor. Gabe still wasn't sure what to say or do. I thought I lost you, he said in Alena's head, then rested a hand on Marlie's shoulder briefly. "We'll all be alright. Eventually." He offered a hand to each of them to help them up, then shot one more glance around the bakery. Bye, Cookie. He didn't know if Alena and Marlie heard him, but he didn't care. This was probably a better way to pay his respects than sitting in a pew in a church full of sad people.
