Katara woke up earlier than everyone else this morning, before the sun itself had decided to awaken. it wasn't her plan to do so, but it just happened. She half woke to the sound of Momo foraging for food, but her brain came fully awake. Even though her eyes and her body desperately wanted to stay asleep, her mind started tumbling over the events of the past few days, thinking of Appa, trying to come up with a new plan to see the Earth King before their appointed time. Eventually she gave up hoping her brain would shut down and she could get some sleep, and got up to start her day.
She bathed and got dressed, did her hair, then tied Gran Gran's necklace around her neck. her fingers trailed over the texture of the design carved into the pendant. So many different memories were linked to that necklace now. It was Gran Gran's engagement gift from Master Pakku, carved with love and purpose. It had memories both beautiful and sad tied to it from the past. There were more recent memories as well. The day she realized she'd lost it while escaping the Fire Nation prison with Haru and the other Earth benders. Zuko found it and promised to return it and save her from the pirates if she turned Aang over to him. She could still hear his voice in her ear and it made her shudder.
Aang was the one who got it back for her after it had been used by the bounty hunter to track them down. She smiled, touching the necklace again. it was funny how something so small could mean so much. There was never anything Katara owned before that had held such meaning.
She was careful the be quiet as she opened the door, Momo being the only one to stir. He lifted his head and looked at her with questioning eyes. Katara put a finger to her lips and Momo jumped up to scurry outside with her.
The air was cool and embracing. She took a deep breath in and leaned on the banister to look up into the sky full of fading stars. Momo came to rest on her shoulder and she scratched his head affectionately. "I keep thinking about all the terrible things that have happened since I left home," she admitted quietly, "but I keep forgetting all the good stuff that's happened, too." And in truth, there had been a lot of good. Letting go of a sigh, she said, "It's just so easy to focus on the bad sometimes."
