Characters: Audrey Sean, OPEN
Setting: Defarge Winery
Content: Worksafe
Summary: The Winery is hosting an exclusive wine-tasting party for the public in order to sell their fine wine and showcased vintage wine. A percentage of the sells made that night will go to NanoTech, Audrey's father's company, out of the Defarge's very graciousness. Audrey's alter ego, Shadow Touched, might have done some snooping and discovered stolen wine in the Defarge Winery (and later prompted them to host this Event or some underhanded things might come to light), so expect very unpleasant yet stoically polite Defarge NPCs if you will.

The Winery was an impressive establishment. Audrey, as Shadow Touched, had seen the cellar and that had nearly lost her in her amazement. Like most of the public, she knew of the Defarge's wine room (it was very talked about when it was first built) above ground, a large, climate controlled room with something like 8,000 bottles. It was an amazing thing to behold, and the Defarge Winery was praised for its commitment to its craft. She heard most of the stock had been shipped from a vineyard in France and she wondered briefly how that must have happened, considering how anal they were about the wine's condition and aging. The process must have been tedious.

Audrey mingled with the crowd in the establishment's main showcasing room. The lights were bright and the soft decor alluring. There was a crystal chandelier hanging high above in the middle of the room and Audrey took a second to admire it before a server approached her with a tray and a single glass of shimmery, white wine. She smiled graciously and wrapped her slender fingers around the neck of the glass. Oh well, time to play nice, she thought mischievously and approached the hosts. "Monsieur Defarge," immediately he gave her a wary look, "I'm very appreciative of this.. kind gesture. I--I don't know what to say, except thank you. I wish I could offer you something more besides simple words.. however, I would like to know what prompted this event? If I may be so bold as to ask, I mean no offense."

His face twisted into something confused and he seemed to be backtracking in his head. His wife's mouth opened and closed for a second and finally she spoke with a faint accent. "Oh, oh Miss Sean, it is.. out of the goodness of our hearts. We wish to help, that is all." She sounded nervous and Mister Defarge looked a little edgy as Audrey gave them a hopeful look.

"So you must've heard about our latest project, is that right? I think we've made improvements in our Moletronics department," here she gave them a delighted smile and they nodded stiffly. She shook their hands and thanked them once again and she was on her way again, mingling with guests with her glass in hand. Too bad they didn't bring anything out from their wine cellar..

Rachel received an invitation to the event and decided to go. She was in the mood for a party: that night she had led a man to lose him mind, and when her powers were put to a good use something in her tuned up a little differently. One could say she'd get a more wild, predatory glimpse on her eyes and behavior. Others, that she developed a renewed sex appeal, irresistible to many.

She wanted to mingle, forge a contact here and there, and if she was lucky, being able to put all that sexual energy to some use. Perhaps she'd go somewhere afterwards, to seduce someone. A waiter offered her a glass and she took it, sipping it. She talked to some old clients, owners of big companies that she'd defended in some cases. And, of course, won. Still in a very business mood, she approached some politicians and talked for some minutes. It wasn't long before she decided to walk around, still feeling very untamed and powerful.

That was a woman on the prowl, Audrey thought, watching the elegant woman move from one person to the next. She was socializing like maybe Audrey should've been doing, but really, some of the people here were extremely cumbersome and she had little desire to start a conversation with someone probably twice her age and five times more boring. She supposed she should talk up some more people and she did just that, talking to a pair and moving on to another person with enough money in their proverbial pocket to be there in attendance.

Audrey sipped on her wine daintily, watching the woman above the rim of her glass. The other woman had continued talking to various people, now walking around and enjoying the atmosphere. It was odd, she didn't think she recognized her. Still, there was a possibility that she knew of Audrey through her father or maybe the company.

Oh well, she should play the good, appreciative hostess now. "Are you enjoying the event, madame?" she asked amiably, smiling to her as she walked up. She added that last word in spirit of the French wine, which was delicious, she thought.

Rachel turned to the girl talking to her, immediately recognizing her as Audrey Sean, also known as The Heiress. "Oui, bien sûr. It's been a lovely evening, Ms Sean." She answered, looking intensely at the other girl. Nothing better than to socialize with the host of the party. "I don't believe we were formally introduced, though. My name is Rachel Doyle." She stretched her hand. "Me and your father have worked together a couple years ago."

Audrey smiled appreciatively, "Je suis contente pour entendre cela, madame." She suddenly laughed nervously, ducking her head a little, "I'm sorry if my French sounds a little rusty, it's because it is."

The younger woman took her hand and shook it firmly with a smile, "Nice to make your acquaintance, Miss or Misses Doyle?" She hoped she didn't come off as brash for inquiring after her marital status but she figured it would be worse if she just started calling her 'Rachel'. The woman was older than her so the pretense of being respectful was pushed to the forefront.

"Oh? You know my father," she meant to say it innocently, but there was twinge of something in her tone.

"Oh, je crois que tu parles un bon Français." Rachel said graciously, her eyes examining Audrey's body for a milissecond and then going back to staring into the younger woman's eyes.

"Misses Doyle." She informed, raising her eyebrows ever so slightly, amazed at her inquiry. Audrey had just scored a few points: etiquette was etiquette, and it was supposed to be followed. "But please, do call me Rachel." She gave her a half grin.

"Oh, yes. I'm a lawyer, and your father requested my services." She gave no more details, not wanting to make him a subject of the conversation. "He mentioned you once or twice. But I hear you're not working as a scientist anymore, is that right?"

Audrey grinned, feeling the eye-contact heavily. "Vous êtes gentille. Je pense que c'est un peu mauvaise," she admitted. She supposed it was human nature to be her own worst critic, but such was life.

"As you wish, but only if you call me Audrey," the statement was delivered with an easy air, friendly and maybe a little cutesy. This woman was interesting and had a feel about her.. very charged..

"Yes, that's correct. I gave that up.. I had a little scare and anyway," she continued through the lie, hoping Rachel wouldn't pick up on it and ask for details, "I only pursued that career out of my father's insistence. It was not what I wanted." Audrey gave a small shrug, it wasn't the complete truth but it was her story and she was sticking to it.

"Pas de tout. Je ne suis pas un bonne juge, mais je peux dire que tu parles très bien." She said languidly. It was always interesting to meet someone who spoke another language - specially one she was fluent herself. And speaking French was like touching silk.

Rachel tried to hold back, restrain her own manners. She'd get so... savage, deep inside. Alexander wasn't wrong when he said she was a storm. He was stating an abvious truth. "As you wish, Audrey." She purred the younger girl's name.

"Very good. You ought to pursue youw own wishes, and no one else's. What have you done lately, then?" She inquired before sipping her glass.

"Merci beaucoup, Rachel," she bowed her head in thanks, the other woman's name rolling off her tone with a French accent. French was such a lovely language, it seemed to Audrey that it had an almost romantic touch to it just like Latin. Oh, if she could speak Latin! Italian! She mused for a second before drawing her attention back.

Audrey blinked curiously, a lazy smile stretching her lips before she could think much of it.

She had to take a second to think under the woman's gaze and promptly said, "I was thinking about returning to school and continuing my education. Work towards a Master's in English.." She was glad Rachel had dropped the comment about her father and moved on to ask her own about herself, "But enough about me, do you have any extracurricular activities outside of defending the good man?" Her tone was a little coy.

"That's important. It never harms to take your time and invest on your education." Rachel stated simply before sipping her wine. The event was turning out to be rather pleasant. She had always enjoyed the hunt, the flirting. It never hurted anybody, right? Marrying was incovenient at times, all that faithfulness not allowing you to have that thrill. "About me? Oh, unfortunately working as a lawyer consumes most of my time. I do have my little pleasures, though, such as a bottle of good wine or a good painting."

"I couldn't have said it better myself," Audrey agreed, taking a sip of her wine with her pink lips smiling subtly at her. She wondered how long they had been talking because it seemed the crowd of people had dwindled slightly.

"Well, you know what they say, it's all about the little pleasures," she hoped that didn't sound.. forward or anything but she couldn't help her mouth sometimes. It could be taken an an innocent statement she was sure, and either way, it should be. "What do you think of the wine here, Rachel?" she asked, hoping to spark conversation before she turned red.

It seemed to Rachel all her senses were tuned. "Oh, marvelous. My taste buds couldn't be more thankful." She smirked. "I'm having to hold back, to tell the truth, to limit myself to two or three glasses. I wouldn't want the alcohol to blurr my judgement". She licked her own lips unconsciously, a predatory glimpse in her eyes. She was barely registering her surroundings at that point. "I'm actually a little bit tired of all the socializing, though, and was about to take some fresh air. J'aimerais beaucoup si tu m'accompagnerais."

"I'm glad to hear that," she gave her a thankful nod and eyed the Defarges from the corner of her eye. They were being unpleasant little pricks.. she pushed the thought out of her head before taking a sip of her own wine. It would be a lie to say Audrey didn't recognize that look Rachel was giving her.

It made her feel a little lightheaded. She smiled, that sounded nice, but she had.. she had obligations here. She couldn't just leave. Audrey gave her an apologetic look. "J'aimerais faire cela, aussi, mais.. je ne peux pas partir. Je suis désolée," she added, her tone a little breathy. Oh dear.. how could anyone have such a smoldering look?

"Très bien." Rachel answered softly. She knew very well that wasn't a "no", just a "probably later". One of the advantages of being a telepath, one could say. Audrey's unsteady breathing was quickly noticed, and was nothing but a good sign. "Nous pouvons parler une fois de plus après. We'll have plenty of time to catch up later." She smiled. "How does that sound?"

Wine. It was a curse of high-society. All those idiots that thought you could taste cherries or spices or how old the bloody vine was thought the tasted of crushed and rotting fruit were . And Richard knew about pretentious. That was the very reason he was here- he was here because tonight this was where everyone was and would be seen, and that was the very reason he was carrying a glass of the judiciously over-priced grape juice and pretending he was loving every second of it.

Why? Because if he didn't then those people in the world who disliked him, and he knew there were quite a few of them, would use the opportunity to present him as unrefined, a slob with no taste or class. And that was not something he wanted in the slightest.

Of course she had seen him.

Audrey pursed her lips and feigned a sweet smile at a pair that walked up to her. She exchanged small talk with them, commenting on the wine, how beautiful the establishment looked this fine evening, and where is your father sweetie? Oh working, as usual, was the plain answer given, a lilt of a laugh at the end to hint at playfulness. They smiled and fell right along her charms. It wasn't long before she asked to take her leave of their company, saying she would like to address some other people before the evening ended. She was so gracious they couldn't say no, and she went on her way.

She did not mean to greet him. In all honesty, she would have preferred he hadn't shown up at all, and saved her.. saved her the.. she struggled for a word. The awkwardness, the tedious conversation that she was sure would follow. The trouble of having to pretend to be polite and charming and oh thank you so much for coming! Can you please go and die now?

No?

"Richard," the name rolled off her tongue easily (easier than she'd like to admit), "looking as comfortable as ever."

She mock-pouted a little as she looked around, "Isn't this your scene?" She already knew the answer to that and wondered why he felt he had to do anything.

"Aubrey." He greeted, and for a moment he wanted to smile at her as he had done once before, she knew he hated wine, hated events centred around it and normally they would have disappeared to moon-lit roof tops to talk and enjoy something much better tasting than wine.

But that of course was all over now and the tone of her voice was not supportive, pitying or even slightly wicked. It was mocking and cold. Clearly their split had had more lasting effects than a few days hiding from the media. "I'm glad to see you looking so well. And as beautiful as ever." It slipped out before he could stop it and he quickly tried to cover himself, "After all, we always have to look our best, don't we?"

"I enjoy the company a great deal." He replied to her, his own eyes following her glances, "And the wine is better than the majority I've tried before. But it's not my sort of drink, you know that. Although I'm happy to support local endeavours."

Beautiful?

It threw her off. Only a little, she thought, trying to shake off the feeling he was giving her through a sip of the wine in her hand. God, no wonder Richard hated the stuff, it wasn't quite nearly as strong as Audrey would have liked. Especially right now, and especially with Richard's comment following his semi-compliment. It seemed he couldn't even pay her a nice compliment without backtracking.

Coward, she sniffed angrily, "Yes, I suppose we do. Too bad some of us can't pull it off as well as others, hmm?" She gave him a pointed look.

"You enjoy having attention, I think you'd put up with this crowd to have it," she corrected him without missing a beat. Audrey smiled, the motion coming out more genuine and less biting. "I'm sure," she snapped before making eye-contact, "Thank you, monsieur."

There. Proof that yet again he had said the wrong thing. Was the woman ever happy with anything he did or said? She must have been at one point, but if Audrey had ever been pleased with him, it seemed to him to have been a long time ago. "True. But some of us can't be as naturally attractive and charming as you. You should try and forgive us lesser creatures." He had meant it to be mocking, but instead it didn't come out that way at all.

"I have no problem with any of the guests, Audrey." He replied, sighing softly, and setting his wine glass down. He wasn't enjoying it, hated it, in fact, no matter what he said, and if he was going to trade unpleasant pleasantries with Aubrey he wanted a clear head.

Sometimes the workings of her own mind confused her. She was so angry with him, she wanted to--she wanted to deck him! Or something equally painful! Ooh. But when he said things like that.. she didn't know what to feel. Damn him. Damn him to sea of lava. Or something equally painful suited her just fine.

"What difference does it make if I forgive them or not? Lesser creatures will always be lesser creatures, non, Richard?" her smile was shaky at best, and had lost most of its bite. Only her tone had an edge now, because even her eyes had soften. She averted her gaze.

"Right," she commented airily. She couldn't help the tiny smirk at his actions and gave him an amused look. "You could at least hold it and pretend you're refined."

"A lesser creature will always be a lesser creature, but will only seem more so in your presence." He agreed, trying a small genuinely apologetic smile in her direction.

"If it will make you feel any better, of course." He said, picking up the glass and taking another swallow, trying to stop his face twisting. It was horrible. "You don't think they have any vodka and lime, do you? For old times' sake?" He asked her, a pleading tone in his voice. Audrey clearly wanted to dominate him, to make him the 'lesser creature' and so be it. If it meant that the party was some what more bearable because they were no longer at each other's throats, well, that was best for him.

She made a face, a mix between amused and disbelieving. Richard. This was Richard she was talking to. How easy it was to forget sometimes, how easy it was to.. fall into old habits. "Smooth as always, Mr. Hastings. You don't miss a beat, do you?" she gave him a coy smile, biting back a vicious look at his apologetic smile. She could at least try to be civil.

She laughed. Audrey genuinely laughed and gave him a pitying smile, trying to contain the rest of her humor behind her lips. She walked up to him and straightened his jacket with her free hand, smoothing down the fabric with that mocking smile still in place. "I can't believe you actually drank it," she said, shaking her head. God, he was an idiot. What was he trying to do?

"I might," she gave him a clueless shrug, toying with him. "Or might not. My memory is a little sketchy, Mr. Hastings."

His expression didn't change for a long moment, the taste still too keen on his tongue. Her laughter was good to hear, although he hadn't realised he had missed it. "I don't think I'm as smooth as this stuff." He said, "What do they put in it? Antifreeze?"

He let her straighten his jacket, feeling odd though as she touched him, the light but controlling hands that he, or rather, LiveWire knew could be more than dangerous should she choose to use them in such a way. "Still like me to look presentable?" He asked, although god knew that a $2000 suit should make anyone presentable.

"I would be very greatful if you could remember. Or we could find a bar that serves something other than wine and enjoy the rest of the evening there?" That was too forward he should have realised, but the words fell from his lips without intervention of his brain.

"Why yes, it's the latest thing, didn't you know?" she couldn't help laughing again, simply knowing how much he hated the drink and then seeing him down it like he had, well it was mildly disturbing but overall, amusing.

Audrey gave him a curious look. Maybe she shouldn't have touched him, she thought and withdrew her hand and took a step back to promote the distance between them. "Of course," she answered without any qualms, "I'm sure even lesser beings can pull off 'presentable', am I correct?" Her tone was genuinely questioning but her the smirk on her face belied her.

She almost didn't know what to say. Richard had her speechless. Oh, he'd have a field day. "I don't think that's such a great idea, Mr. Hastings," she finally managed to say, "We wouldn't want to attract that kind of attention. Besides, I'm sure you have an.. image.. to uphold. You'll harm your bachelorhood appeal if you keep hanging around the same old girl." The words tasted bitter.

Audrey pursed her lips and kept her eyes off him.

"I am afraid I don't keep up to speed with the latest developments in wine-making." He replied to her, grinning again. "I leave that up to people with more... refined taste buds."

It was a shame that she pulled away, he had enjoyed those moments, the reminder of their past relationship. But of course that spell was broken quickly enough. "We try, Audrey, we try. But how could we ever hope to do anything that even came close to your prefection?"

And then that dream, the easy conversation, it all shattered. "Not even as friends? Enemies?" He asked of her, trying to rescue the previous mood.

Friends? As friends? She wanted to scoff at his petty suggestion and maybe phase him through the floor until half of his body was visible and the other half was hanging in the wine cellar. Audrey decided with the conviction only women seemed to possess that Richard was stupid. Handsome, charming but nevertheless, stupid. She scowled at him, the confusion in her mind translating itself as anger. She couldn't make heads or tails of the situation and it irked her.

"What do you want, Mr. Hastings?" her voice was soft and her tone level. If he wanted a drink there was no one stopping him. Certainly not her.. so what was he really after now?

He sighed. He had tried, and no one could say that he hadn't. "What do I want? Well, I'd like if the few months hadn't happened and if we could have kept... certain things to ourselves." He said in a whispered tone, looking pointedly at her. "But as I can't travel back through time and neither can you, I'll live with it. I just think we... we had a good thing going." He told her with a shrug, ready to brush past her and find himself something more drinkable.

Her eyes narrowed as he hinted at their secrets and she focused her gaze on his tie. God that thing was ugly, she thought disdainfully, and it was so obvious what she was trying to do and it made her feel all the more pathetic. But she didn't want to think about anything concerning them. There was no longer a them, a we, an us, and it was not fair that he was mentioning it again.

Had. They had.

She couldn't decide whether it was the look on his face, resigned, weary, or the careless shrug he gave her that made her feel worse. So that was it? Audrey felt like they were breaking up all over again.

Needless to say, she wasn't pleased. "So that's it?" and she hated herself for using such a broken tone. Get it together, Audrey, she thought. Her mouth snapped shut and Audrey cleared her throat, her eyes glinting sharply and coldly when she looked up again, fixing him with a steely glare. "You won't even fight for--" she choked on the word me and instead said, "this. Typical." She gave him a heartless shrug right back, crossing an arm over her chest.

"No, that isn't it, Audrey!" He turned, glaring at her again, and only calmed himself when he felt the stares of other people around them. "I hate fighting with you like this!" He hissed at her, trying to lower his voice. "Can we talk about this somewhere else?!" "No," she snarled quietly, which was a feat in itself considering her temper.

She glared at him right back, her brown eyes smoldering through her lashes. Right now, she could care less if the people wanted to stare, it wasn't her that was making a fool of herself. Still, seeing him so angry made her feel a little giddy. It was refreshing seeing him act so human with her, instead of flirting like he did with everything else that had legs and a heartbeat. Although considering it was Richard, it probably didn't have to have a heartbeat.

The longer she thought about it, the faster her angry scowl fell into a coy smirk. "We can talk about it here. Or we don't talk about it. Ever," she rather liked having the advantage.

I don't know why I thought I wanted you back, you're more trouble than you're worth. Fuck talking about it." He snarled, turning away from her and marching outside, breathing hard. He was alone here and had no qualms about punching the street lamp, letting the surge of electricity blow the bulb, not only in that one, but in the rest down the street. He was not about to let her get the better of him, but he had to admit that somehow she already had.

Audrey stood stock still, a small smirk playing on her lips and disguising tentative emotions, her aura positively dangerous and radiating. A few people went out of their way to avoid her, but she wasn't taking notice of anyone besides the man walking away with a fury.

That hurt. She was willing to admit it to herself in a moment of weakness, before she felt several pairs of eyes on her. Audrey looked around briefly and would've been able to pull it off casually had not everyone suddenly turned their attention on her at Richard's little outburst. Oh shit, she thought vehemently, clutching her wine glass harder than necessary. She smiled a little, hoping prying eyes would go back to their business. Some did, others weren't so easily dissuaded from being so damn nosy. She cursed in her head as she walked towards the entrance, the same path Richard had gone. She leaned against the open doors of the building as the lights inside flickered shortly, and watched Richard quietly, drawing no attention to herself. She wouldn't bother him but she wished he would leave already so she wouldn't have to keep thinking about anything related to him.

It was troubling seeing him so human as much as she enjoyed it.

He growled, thumping the metal again and this time the charge sent tiny fragments of broken glass down onto the pavement, glittering faintly like flakes of snow or diamonds falling from the sky. He couldn't believe what a fool he'd been. How could he have expected for a few sweet words to have charmed her back onto his side. He was over her, he was, he told himself, but what he wanted was for her not to be over him. He wanted her to want him back, to apologise for their break up and for her to brush her hand over his chest again, look up at him with those beautiful dark eyes and see adoration in them as well as his own reflection.

Was that too much to ask? It hadn't even been his fault! And she, she, she was the one who had been bitchy, who had laughed at him and mocked him. No, she was over him... or was she, he thought suddenly. Was she over him? She had wanted to embarrass him, to have him seen as weak and her as powerful, as a victor. If she was over him, she would have let it go. She probably had been waiting all night, watching him, waiting for the right moment to approach.

She was still head-over-heels in love with him, he realised. Completely mad for him. That was it. The sudden understanding made him stand up straight, made him smile, made him feel once more the cock-sure attractive young man he knew he was. He was turning now to head back inside when he saw her silhouetted against the light from inside. "Getting colder out here." He said to her, the smirk back in place like it had never left his face, "Don't catch a cold, Audrey my love."
