For the past few weeks, Eden Mackenzie Durant had been doing pretty damn well when it came down to doing her job and relaxing at home. She got up in the mornings, got her shower, ate breakfast, went to work, did her job, came home, ate dinner and went to sleep. Sometimes she got a run in as the jaguar. Sometimes Marcus tried to start a conversation, but Eden couldn't just yet. Her pride was still hurt. She kept things casual, business oriented and nothing else. A far cry from how things had been before between the two. Sure, it sucked, but that was the way that Eden operated. She forced herself into the process of detachment and let it go from there. Sometimes it was a short road. This time... this time it was proving to be quite the opposite. Tonight, she'd made the decision to stay away from the office. Sure, the last time she'd gone end, she ended up working on two cases with Izzy, using her feline to get answers and make headway. And yeah, it had been a blast, really, but tonight, Eden needed something different. She needed socialization, even if the possibility would be a small one. She knew the Christmas Lighting ceremony had already happened three nights ago. She'd even been there for it. But she hadn't really just spent time out in town on a regular basis. All her extra time lately seemed to be spent on cases or at home. That had never really been the woman she was. She'd always been kind of fun, but not overly obnoxious... and it was time to find that woman again. She had to start somewhere. With it being as cold as it had been (and Eden was nothing if not a Winter hater), she'd made sure to dress warmly. She knew how to buy warm clothing. They may not have looked like there was much there because she wasn't resembling a puffball, but she was nice and toasty. It was just perfect for where she was. And what she planned to do. This evening, Eden had planned for herself a nice, slow walk along town. She'd done it when she first arrived, but she hadn't done it much since then. The habit had abandoned her, and that just wouldn't do. So she'd decided to spend some time in the town square and go from there. If she was lucky, she might even pick up a new case or two. Or get involved in some kind of nonsense. Okay, so yeah, even though she'd made the choice to relax, she still had work on some part of her mind. That was never going to change. Eden was a workaholic of the best sort. The square being full of people would probably be surprising to some. Since the supernatural world, her world, had come to light, there was a lot more movement in the dark now. Businesses stayed open, vampires were hired as night shift, things were certainly easier for some. Of that, she was certain. Sure, it came with some things people had to work with, like figuring out salary changes and schedule hours for the change in work week, but she'd found that most people acclimated well to it. As a night person herself, she certainly appreciated the change. As a supernatural, she really appreciated the effort to change that others were putting forth. It reminded her that not all people were bad. That the spoiled apple philosophy didn't work on humanoid species. It showed her that there was enough hope in the world that maybe, just maybe, they could all pull through and make this work for the better of everyone. And yeah, sure, it was a sappy notion. But you know what? It was Christmas. And Eden had nothing better to do at the moment than stand with her gloved hands at resting in her pockets, bright eyes starting up at the large Christmas tree that had been put up, letting the wind play with her hair. Feel that Christmas spirit. |
