Tony had given her two extra weeks paid vacation. But Darcy, wasn't really in the mood to be by herself. Even though she did leave for a few days, it didn't do much. So, she came home early and texted Jane about stopping by. So, here she was knocking on Jane's door. She didn't bother stopping at the house, instead, she came straight to Jane’s. Needing to see her best friend.
In truth, Darcy was sure she looked a mess. Even though she tried, put some effort into how she looked. Very light makeup and her hair washed. But aside that, she did your much effort in anything else. Sweats and a shirt hugged her frame and sneakers. Nothing fancy.
Jane pulled open the door to let her friend into her apartment. In truth, Jane hadn’t spent much time home over the past several weeks. She’d slept at Stark’s while everyone has vanished, only returning to pack for Wakanda. At least the decorations from her aborted birthday party had been cleared away since her return and the apartment returned to its usual state of semi-clutter among the hated cold modern architecture.
“Hey,” Jane said, smoothing down her hair where it was matted from her nap. “You doing ok?”
Once she was let inside, and Jane asked if she was okay, Darcy broke. Her head shaking as her lower lip trembled and tears suddenly flowed down her eyes as she came to take a step or two and hug Jane suddenly and tightly for that matter as she swallowed down as best as she could.
It was obviously clear, that Darcy was not okay. Not in the least.
“Hey,” Jane sighed, wrapping her arms around her friend. “What happened?”
When she pulled away, she had cleaned off her face with the sleeve of her shirt as she sniffled on and off. “....Loki and I broke up…” Words she hadn’t said since the break-up and just saying them out loud now, made her heart break a bit more.
A heavy sigh escaped from her, as she brought her gaze down to her empty hands. It felt weird, but soon her gaze came up to look at Jane finally. “..I don’t know what to do…”
“What?” Jane ushered Darcy inside and steered her towards the couch. “What happened?” she asked again.
Once she was seated on the couch, Darcy just stared at her hands, her fingers fidgeting together for the moment. “We had just gotten back from Sakaar, a trash planet Loki was on when he skipped outta here to make sure Thanos couldn’t get the space stone. Anyways, we had just gotten home, maybe home for a few hours. Not a full day, I know that.”
She was shaking slightly, just recalling being home with Loki, it wasn’t what she thought would happen between them.
“He was upset about what happened in Wakanda, the whole being stuck there and fighting. I told him, it wasn’t gonna happen again because...Seriously, my days of saving Earth are so over… But… he said I was done with everything, with my work at Starks. My involvement with nations to ensure we're working together. Said I was done with it once we were married and I would focus on Asgard. Which, I agreed on because it’s Asgard, it’s Thor and Loki’s home, of course, I wanna help. “ Her breathing was shaky.
“We were supposed to get married….” She said looking towards Jane. “Thor was going to say a few words to bless our marriage and then later we would have a feast” And there she was crying all over again into her hands. “Basically, the fight escalated, he kept telling me what my duties as a princess would be, I told him I’m not a princess, and… It was just… “She sighed heavily once more.
“Jane… I miss him…. And I know you don’t like him, but…. I just… “She trailed off as she shook her head and cried into her hands once more.
“What?” Jane gaped for a moment before her eyes narrowed. “Darcy, no one has the right to decide for you what your life is going to be, what work you can do. The hell with that, I don’t care what he’s prince of.”
Redlined eyes came to look over at Jane for the moment. “I know.. Jane I know, I argued this with him, but he just wasn’t listening. Wouldn’t budge.” She sniffled once more as she leaned back on the couch. “I get that he was worried about what happened… But he wouldn’t listen, and then… Then he kept saying I wouldn’t leave. Because he knows… he knows I love him more than anything in all the universes, but… He wouldn’t budge.”
Her shaking hands balled tightly into fists on her lap. “If he would have just listened… Tried to work and compromise where we both would be happy, this wouldn’t have happened…. Why… does he have to be so stubborn sometimes…” She sighed once more, as she let her hands-free and moved to look at her ring finger once more.
Darcy was upset and Jane had the feeling she might be skipping something in her distress. “Wouldn’t leave? Wouldn’t leave what?”
“Him. He said I would never leave him.” She said as she looked over to Jane. “Which he was right. I never thought I’d leave him. Never wanted too. In truth, I didn’t wanna walk out that door… But he just… wouldn’t listen….” She felt her body shut down as she leaned into Jane’s couch some more.
“I know you don’t like him. But aside this argument, we do love each other.” Her gaze still down to her fingers. “... I wanna go back home..." But at this point, Darcy didn’t know where that home was anymore.
“I know you do.” Darcy kept looking down at her hands - thinking about the wedding ring that would have been there, no doubt - so Jane reached out and took Darcy’s hand in hers. “And it’s not that I don’t like him, it’s just… complicated and I want you to be happy. Sometimes an unwillingness to walk away can cover up all kinds of problems.” Jane, after all, had broken up with Thor and she’d been convinced at the time it was for good.
“He makes me happy…” Is all Darcy said as she felt her lips trembling once more. There was a lot of people didn’t know about their relationship. About Loki. But as she felt Jane take her hand, she came to just stare at her friend for the moment. “I just wanna go home.” She said softly as she pulled her hand out of Jane’s hold for the moment.
“I know it’s not what you wanted to hear when I said I needed to talk to you… I just… Is this how you felt when you and Thor broke up… Like you felt your heart breaking every minute? And you knew, deep down you’d never love anyone again?”
“You saw me, I was a wreck.” It was a week before Jane could even change out of her pajamas. “I was devastated. But at the same time, I had no idea things would turn out as they have. I was expecting that I would have to make a life for myself on my terms, whatever that looked like.”
She remembered how Jane looked when her relationship with Thor ended… It was pretty much how Darcy was looking right now. And now, she had to remap her life all over again, uncertain where it would take it now. Tears still rolled down her cheeks softly during this whole conversation. “I just… I miss him so much it hurts…” A heavy sigh escaped her as she pushed herself off the couch,
“I’m just gonna go to the apartment,” is all she said as she glanced over at Jane.
“Do you want to stay here?” Jane offered. “I know it just the couch but it’s comfy. Or Thor can go deal with his brother and you and I can stay in my room.”
Oh God, Darcy hadn’t even thought about Thor since the whole break up from Loki. Her frame came to crash back into the couch when Jane offered it. “...I haven’t even talked to Thor… The whole thing just happened so fast…” A heavy sigh escaped her lips once more.
“Don’t worry about Thor.” With his Asgardian propriety, Jane doubted he would be anything less than sympathetic and kind. “He’ll be nice. And if he’s not he has me to deal with, okay? Stay. We’ll watch movies in bed and eat ice cream.”
A soft nod of her head was given. “Sure…” She said softly as she rested her head on Jane’s shoulder. “I have to talk to him…” She meant Loki, but that was obvious at this point. It wasn’t a want, it was more a need to talk to him, and see him. To figure things out.
In truth, she didn’t want time. She wanted Loki... But she also knew Jane was right. A heavy nod was given as she pulled off Jane’s shoulder. “Don’t kick Thor out the room... I can sleep on the couch, it’s fine,” She said as she started to braid her hair for the night.
“Not today,” Jane said. “You don’t have to talk to anyone tonight. It can wait. Just take some time. And nevermind Thor. I’ve known you longer so he can wait. He doesn’t need to be here.”
Darcy felt slightly bad at that moment. But right now, she needed her friend and she didn’t want to be at the apartment alone anymore. “Just for a few days.” She assured her since she didn’t wanna intrude.
“No problem,” Jane assured her. “Now, c’mon. I’ll order food. It’ll be a pizza and Captain Americone night.”
She’d give it to Jane, that actually made her laugh as she came to nod her head. “I want the Hulk-a-burning fudge one,” she said as she cracked a faint smile.
