who: Everyone from the apartment thread before.
what: The end of Mr. Stoughton and Mr. Barr.
rating: High for violence, language, and gore.
notes: note the apartment layout beneath the cut. Respond to each segment of the action, which I've split up since so much is going to happen in so little time (literally imagine: bang-pause-bang-pause-bang-pause-done). The people highlighted in parenthesis signed up here, so make sure you don't step on their toes as their characters do their part, otherwise react as you will as long as these principle events happen.

Outside the door, there is a sharp pop. Even through the door, it is just loud enough to echo. There isn't time to wonder if a car out there was backfiring. There wasn't time to wonder at all, only react.

[ Note: People who know what a 9 mm gunshot sounds like have a split second to react. ]

Davis knew what a gunshot sounded like. He knew it the moment he heard it, which is why his chair scraped across the floor. He started half upright at the kitchen table and went for a gun he wasn't wearing, groping at nothing but air with his heart hammering in his chest.

Jared knew what that sound was, too. He grew up on a long Los Angeles street that divided the territory between two hispanic gangs that picked each other off street corners from passing cars. He was already against a wall, and his immediate reaction was to press himself back against it, away from whoever was coming. He looked sharply across the room at Cal, who took a step forward with one hand reached automatically toward Ellen's back, as if his mind was trying to catch up to his instincts.

Something goes pop outside the door, and her head jackknifes around. Kelly has been around guns. Here, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Manhattan, Michigan, North Carolina. Big guns, little guns. Guns the size of toys and double barrel shot guns, aiming at people and animals and nothing in particular. Her brain connects the pop with that of a gun, and reaches her hands out to shove Sebastian to the floor, turning her body towards the door...

A moment later, the door is pushed gently open to its full extent, stopped only by Ellen's duffle bag. Mr. Barr, resplendent in a tailored suit and easily discernible from the soft evening behind him, is framed in the doorway. He is smiling, quiet and secretive, and his white blue eyes are sleepy and seem to burn in slitted intensity. He has a gun. It is ridiculous and unbelievable, but he does. He looks out at those in the kitchen, and points the gun at the first group of tales he sees, those at the table. He squeezes the trigger.

Davis saw Barr, and he saw the gun. He shouted in alarm, as if he was twenty years younger and the cold was biting at him around the half open door of six-adam-eight and there were more poppoppoping noises of the asshole shooting at him as he crouched. "DOWN!" Davis realized with a pang that he hand no gun, and he turned and made a split-second choice: Ella. He shoved his chair back and dragged Ella down, tipping her chair so they both slammed into the floor even as the door started to open...

Ella screamed and suddenly being dragged down when the door started to open, her arm instinctively waving in the air for her brother who she could not see as Davis crouched over her small figure protectively. "Eli!"

Mason who was beginning to feel the effects of her stone skin fade was antsy until she heard the loud POP, her motions mimicked Jared's and her back was to the wall despite the hiss of discomfort.

Esme had jumped and at the warning of Davis was on her knees trying to drag Deric down with her.

Deric was surprised enough to react without thinking, and turned about four shades closer the colour of the wall. He wasn't concentrating hard enough to hide himself completely, so it was probably good that Esme pulled him down.

Ellen's immediate instinct was to run for the exit and Angie, but Cal's hand on her back signaled her to get down. In a rare fit of obedience, she did what was wanted of her and hit the deck.

... and looked at Barr as he came into the room, the impressive form that he is. Her body was already on the defensive, and before she could cognitively think, it reacted. It pushed and the magic that made her who she was connected, tangling with the water in his body and pulling. Pulling it out, rushing it into his ears, flooding the ear drums. Of course, she didn't know she was flooding his ear drums; sometimes these things work on their own. She's just the catalyst.

Barr turns to look through the archway, and again, he sees tales like himself. Those he wants to fear him. He sees Cal, and he especially wants Cal to suffer--because Cate, in turn, will fear. Without thinking very much about his partner sitting so near (in fact, he only opens his eyes wide, wide and wider, and grins, as if at a childhood playmate), he fires again. His aim goes astray, and he drops the gun.

Livia does not fear the gun. Remove her slinky dresses, and a small puckering scar rests squarely under her right breast: it would not be the first time she's been in this situation, and surprisingly enough, not the first time she's been in this situation as a wolf. The shot goes off and she's on her feet, a growl starting in the back of her throat. People are moving in her black-and-white canine vision, the large white man snapping up the skinny, skitterish girl in front of him, the boy and his dirty sister behind her falling to the ground. She loses sight of Davis, and that niggling possessiveness makes her turn. Barr--if indeed the gunman is Barr; she has never seen him, but he does not reek of the fear the rest of the room is giving off in waves--aims and misses, and she smells the blood in the air.

Ah, yes. Time to go to work.

Livia, sex bot Livia, moved in front of him and Tony dodged to the left, hand sliding down the counter. Fingers grasped a bread knife, tightening over the hilt as the chaos went down in the room. Eli was shot, Barr was still standing, Ella was down, the Horrors were... he wasn't quite sure what they were doing. But he knew what he was doing, and faster than the link of an eye, the knife flew from his fingers towards Barr.

Mason saw the mouthy kid go down and growled. She recognized blood anywhere and she could see it staining the cheap carpet. Despite the screaming in her flesh, all common sense that was battling in her head and the deafening shrieks from the girl she could only assume to be his sister, she shoved herself off and away from the wall ignoring the frustrating sensations coursing through her body. She didn't care. If the kid was wounded he needed help. She didn't see where he was shot but blood was blood.

She moved forward to get to him.

There were gunshots and screaming, the countermanding voices of Cal snapping and Davis bellowing, the chorus of chairs scraping the floor then crashing over. Back behind the small wall, in the comfortable corner of the living room in Barr's blind spot, there were different sounds. Soft rustles. A deadly metallic little snip.

Jared wasn't just human anymore. He snapped his head up from his crouch, taking a quick look at Stoughton to confirm he was in place. Ellen went down, controlled. Cal stayed up. Jared's reflexive crouch expanded and so did a huge black wing. It swept out and the thick, suppressive weight of it caught Mason directly in the face and shoved her back into the wall with a surprising amount of power.

You don't run toward the gunfire.

There are three people down with gunshot wounds: one outside the door, one under the kitchen table, and one still tied to the chair fallen on to its side.

Jared's wing lifted...

...and as soon as Mason saw Barr go down in bloody, artery punctured glory she bolted over to where Eli had fallen and actually landed on her knees with a thud. "Where---arm, okay kid. I need you to sit up." He was two years younger so he got the kid label for now. Mostly because she couldn't remember his name, sorry Eli. "You can move right? I need to see how bad this is." Hey, Mason had experience. Trust her.

Ella was at her brothers side instantly with tears streaming down her face. She was grasping his good hand with both of hers and kissed his knuckles. "You stupid, stupid, stupid. Why did you do that?" She was barely understandable through the blubbering.

Esme ran from her corner of the room to the outside door where Theo was laying in a pool of blood, "I need help out here!" Her voice calling from where she crouched in the ground, her fingers searching for a pulse.

"Ella. Jesus. Stop crying, I'm all right."

Actually, he wasn't completely all right, but given the fate of other people in the room, Eli was actually doing quite well. His arm was in so much pain he could barely think of anything else, though in the end, his arteries were still in tact and that was good enough for him. Now if he could just get his sister to calm down, everything would be --

"Who the hell are you?" he asked the girl who had (at least in his humble opinion) given the stupid suggestion of a group photo. And why the hell should he trust her? Did she have a medical degree? EMT license? YMCA First Aid certification? More common sense than she had shown?

Deric (now returned to his natural colour) drowned out the image of the wolf--Livia--on Barr. And darted through the archway to see who had been hit. He felt an obligation to help anyone he could.

And then he saw.

He did not feel an obligation to help this man. Stoughton lay knocked over in the middle of the room. Blood pooled around his abdomen like a lake of crimson. Deric felt no obligation to this man at all.

Before he was even aware of what was happening, he was across the room, kneeling at Stoughton's side. The wound looked bad. He probably would have bled out if Deric hadn't done anything, but there were parts of him who wanted to be the one who finished it, and all of him wanted it finished. He put his hands over Stoughton's mouth and lips and pressed hard. Under his breath he said, "you better hope I don't meet you next lifetime, asshole." There was a struggle for breath, weak now due to loss of blood, and then it was over.

He stood up, looking surprisingly calm. He had been a villain after all, he knew how to be merciless. The job was done.

The winged man was watching him. Jared was one of the only people that stood perfectly still in a room of chaos and blood. He had folded the black wing out of Mason's way as soon as he saw the wolf spring and Barr fall, but still stood back against the wall with the thick feathers just so many more shadows behind him. He saw Deric come, and he saw what he was doing, and he did nothing.

As Deric watched, Jared thumbed a catch and folded a switchblade away in one impossibly smooth, easy movement, and made it disappear. He still didn't say anything, just dropped his eyes to Stoughton's body once, and then looked back toward the kitchen. It wasn't possible to tell what he was thinking.

Davis, still holding a struggling Eli to the floor with no effort, looked up as Livia spoke. The thoughts moved quickly behind his eyes and then he looked around the kitchen for a familiar face.

"Deric!" he was ordering now, the way police will order because they learned it from the sergeant who taught them how to pull a gun without killing themselves doing it. "I need you to hide the damn apartment door! Where is he?"

Davis took his free hand and gripped the table, dragging it aside with one arm so he could see through the door. Theo. "Jesus." He blinked as wings blocked his view. Jared going out the door with Esme.

To Livia he said, "Stay here. Police will come and we don't need them in here. They'll help Theo."

Jared looked at Esme and nodded, thin face still without fear. "Okay." He followed her out the door, wings solid and real enough that he had to press them hard to the line of his spine to even get through the door. On the way out his dark eyes flashed a look at Livia, just a nod of acknowledgment, soldiers passing on the battlefield.

He heard Davis, looked back as he stepped out after Esme, and said, "Hide it. We'll stay out until they come." The wings stretched as if embracing the cool air the moment they had the room, and there was a split-second's view of Jared starting to crouch over the fallen Theo before the door slammed closed behind him.

Esme crouched down. She was shaking but her voice remained steady. "S-see? There's a lot of blood. And I think---I don't know, I think it hit somewhere vital. Because ... because I tried to make it stop and it won't."

She wiped at her face forgetting there was blood all over her hands and she shuddered a little, "I didn't move him, I can't get it to stop. I can't get it to stop." She clenched her eyes shut and swallowed hard to calm herself. The sick smell of copper and iron stinging her nostrils. She felt a bit sick honestly. She'd seen blood, she worked in a tattoo parlor. People were pierced and stuck with needles every day.

But this, this was different. A man was gushing red like a spring had sprung on his chest. She looked over at Jared's calm face and hung her head a bit.

Ellen stood, looking slightly shaken. She had witnessed the goth boy killing Stoughton from the floor, but didn't see Barr until she rounded the wall into the main room. The bodies didn't bother her as much as she had expected, but she still walked over to Angie and put an arm around her.

In the back of her mind, Toc was cataloguing. Two dead, two wounded, two killers... she had to make sure everything was safe.

And then the room sealed around them. This did not feel safe. But it felt secure. No use trying to leave. She watched wounds being tended as she held Angie, and waited for the next thing to happen.

"Deric, enough." A short pause, in which Davis worked. When he spoke, his voice was just a hair tense. "I was wrong. We can't wait." Reassuringly down at Eli (and for the benefit of Cal and Ella, neither of whom the needed to panic right now), he said, "You'll be fine. It's not bad."

To Deric he said, "I'm sorry, Deric, we'll need that door back open." He thought quickly. "Okay. Here's Barr, and he's the shooter. We'll let them have him. Deric, instead of the apartment, just hide the room." He pointed at the living room through the archway. Sirens screamed; they were faint but coming closer. "Everyone in this room saw a big dog take out Barr after he shot Eli. Then it ran off. You don't know what the dog looks like other than that it's big and black. Cal, you need to get the hell out of here because you look bad enough already." Cal started to argue, pissed, but Davis cut him off. "Just do it. The paramedics will get Eli to the hospital, and they'll probably figure Barr came for him to wrap it up."

Livia: "Perhaps it would be better to run off as a wolf. It corroborates our story and I don't think they're going to catch you. If you want to come back here, the back window of my apartment two doors down is open."

To the room at large he said, "If you've got issue with the police you need to leave, and leave now. There's a window in the back bedroom large enough to get through, and for Chrissake don't let anyone see you and don't step in the blood." If they went out the front, there would be no avoiding it. Livia was messy.

"Let's go. Deric, open up the front door and seal up that archway. We don't need that sonuvabitch to cause us more trouble dead."

Livia stared at Davis for what seemed longer than was entirely necessary, her eyes cool, regarding him carefully. Finally she dropped the bloody shirt, waiting for the front door to reappear.

"I will lead several of your policemen away. If I am shot, I will not be pleased. You may send my things to the hotel, Mr. Bruin; I will not be returning."

In half a minute she was black and on all fours, bounding over the bloody corpse, tracking red down the porch steps and into the front. Cops started driving in, sirens blaring; she saw their eyes watch her as she trundled past. This was so much more trouble than it was worth.

Deric rolled his eyes. He wasn't a huge fan of this Livia person, but he let her through. The door and windows reappeared and he picked up the teeshirt she had dropped to wipe his handprints. They were still visible, but no one was going to be able to identify them now. He jerked his head at the archway, "anybody needs to get out, they need to get in there before I seal it."

Ellen picked up the duffel and pulled Angie through, looking back to see who would follow.
