introduction: morden garrard
Ahoy hoy! (That's how they used to talk in the olden days, don't you know?) My name is Rory and, though I know a few of you, I think I am a stranger to the majority! In that vein, I am going to approach this introduction as though I am completely unfamiliar to you all - the old hands who've been round the block with me before can skip down to the end, or you can reacquaint yourselves with my lovely and modest self. So!

Like I just said, my name's Rory. I'm 25, English, a Leo with Scorpio rising and my three favourite television detectives (in order) are Miss Marple, Jessica Fletcher and Hetty Wainthropp. You may notice an overarching theme of these venerable sleuths and you would be right - I do love me some older women. But that is a conversation for another day and another character (ohoho!) So I graduated a few years ago and never really got a job that suited me, so I kind of intend to drift along until my parents die and I inherit all their stuff/debts/ancient feuds. I love video games (if you ever IM me, be prepared to be bored to death by me chatting on about The Old Republic!) and tend to come off as a little acerbic at first. Also I hate putting things in order, which is why this list is all over the place. My woefully underused CDJ is [info]shirleyschmidt which you can feel free to add, and my AIM screen names are challenge joan (iPhone) and deathknightdoris (desktop). I'm available all the time, mostly because I am a horrible leech at the moment but even when I work they can't prise my phone out of my hand, so.

That's the me bit over, so welcome back, old hands. MOVING ONWARDS! This dreadful beast is Morden Garrard, the most adorable monster ever to crawl out of the sixteenth century. Morden is an Occultist, and a powerful one considering how long he's been practising. Originally an apprentice apothecary, he worked his way up through traitor to the crown, to court magician, to royal pet, to traitor to the new crown, to itinerant sex fiend. It's been a...varied life, to be sure, but one thing has remained constant throughout all of that: Morden is a very dangerous old man whose only loyalty is to himself and, very minutely, to the Circus that he now inhabits with his other crazy denizens. He is a guiltless, narcissistic murderer and frankly, murder is probably the least dreadful thing he's done. But, like the Chaotic Neutral madbox that he is, Morden's also capable of grand acts of kindness - he's unpredictable, and predictable in its unpredictability. You can pretty much count on him to betray you, and he assumes you know that when you start dealing with him. It's perfectly possible (because I'm telling you it is) that all of this masks a very tired, frightened old bloke who doesn't quite know why he's still alive, but most people won't see that side of him. Most people will only see the depraved, debasing maniac or the laughing, elfin young man who wants to pay for everyone's drinks.

Oh yes, his signature ability: through great effort and force of will, Morden can channel a reality-altering ritual through the power of his voice. Specifically, through his singing voice: originally a very difficult ritual, he's now contained it within a single act of chanting. I'll quote his app here since it sums it up best - "Morden can affect his immediate environment, alter things to make life a little more ‘interesting’: he can bring unlikely creatures to life, or turn the inside of his circus tent into a tropical paradise. The laws of physics need not apply, the natural rule is second to his will, and -crucially- he can implant ideas and suggestions into his willing audience members." Yes, indeed - he sings the world different. I think there's at least one Librarian who he'll be very wary of, if you know what I mean. Whilst this ability naturally has many uses, Morden mostly uses it to stage elaborate, orgiastic performances within his tent at the Circus. He enjoys titillating people, altering their perceptions and basically making sure everybody (but mostly himself) has a bloody good time.

Have I forgotten anything? Probably, I always do. Oh well, his profile is here, and contains more information than I've given you here. I think it's worth a read, but then I would say that since I wrote it. DO YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS? Then this post would be an ideal place to add them.

a) In an edition of Old News: I love your love of older women.
b) Hopefully I shall have I demon coming in soon who'll think Morden is the bee's flipping knees, but
c) for the meantime, I have Iain the Librarian, medium & necromancer Monitor extraordinaire! I imagine he'll find Morden morbidly interesting and massively dangerous, at the very least!

a) In an edition of Old As Abraham News: I also love younger women in the east coast city area :P
b) there is no b, only zuul.
c) Necromancers. Morden dislikes their impudence, he thinks they're implying something.

Hello Rory! I'm Tiff, and I've added you at [info]millefeuilles – JUST A HEAD'S UP. And I play Yoshi, who is my Merchant and will probably not have anything to do with Morden atm. I'm sorry for brevity -- I'm a little tired -- but I'd love to brainstorm because chaos is always welcome in my book.

nice meeting you!

This took ages to reply to, I'm so sorry! Yoshi, I'm certain, is far too sensible and level-headed to have anything to do with naughty Morden's misrule, but I am excited to see him nevertheless!

HELLO, RORY.
You clearly know this one. I still say they should know each other from Tori's many ~travels throughout Europe~. I really do think he could hold Morden at arm's length and be not quite friend or enemy very nicely. WE WILL SEE.

And then I have Irene, my Librarian, at [info]putains who is a French former atheist and kind of views him as a problem waiting to happen, if anything.

Morden says o hai tori. He has a permanent front-row seat reserved at any and all of Morden's shows, JUST SO YOU KNOW. Even though I doubt he has ever gone?

Problems are the icing on life's cake, delicious lady :3

HELLO. I'm Gia and I cdj things up over at [info]walburga, so watch out, I'm shortly headed over to yours to creep.

Morden sounds utterly delightful and delightfully horrifying. I WANT TO THROW EVERYONE AT HIM. My own Occultist, Rainer ([info]ritual), mainly because he channels his magic in a similar way to Morden (force of will! physics can't stand a chance against that when said force is angled just right). Mr Black ([info]readywear), a Nephilim who enjoys a good time, will probably love being titillated by him, but Q here just thinks he's creepy and is staying WELL away.

SO HI.

SLOW REPLY AHOY! I am terribly sorry, and I don't even have a job to blame my slowness on. Can I blame it on being a man?

As mentioned to Marie, I feel like Morden has always slightly been wary of necromancers, like they're silently judging him for not being dead yet. He is a curious beast, but he's a fellow Occultist and that will get him some bro-ly feeling. I am sure he will love Mr Black -and insist on stressing the Mister- and will ensure that his tits will be thoroughly illated if he ever stops by the Circus.

Q don't not know what he's missing, yo. ♥

Hullo hullo! I'm Ros, over at [info]rosasolis with the demon Gremory, who specialises in love & is always in favour of sex fiends who orchestrate orgiastic performances. (Well, unless they hack her off for some other reason somewhere down the line, anyway...)
She may attempt to engage him for Valentine's Day!

Hi Ros! I am almost certain that Morden will adore Gremory with a glee reserved normally for heckling historians. I doubt he will complain about her having the pick of his audiences when she wants them.

Of course, they're both naughty types, so I'm equally sure that there'll be some jockeying and positional tension between them - Morden does like showing off his Occulty powers, and I imagine summonings and the like falls under that.

Ugh sorry for my HORRIBLY LATE REPLY, Rory, but welcome welcome to Gates and I'm happy to have a game with you again! Zoe here, with a handful of characters, some of whom might have a thing or two for Morden. :>

This journal is Nolan Thales, who is an Oracle of the Delphic sort, but when he's not accepting money for visions, he's playing blind pianist at the Heirophant and has a coterie of demons, nightmares, and others with unclean hands as his social group. He's a little prissy (and a little blind) for orgiastic performances, but I feel like he ought to accompany Morden on the keyboard at some point in the near future.

Arazia Santoro ([info]intensifying) is a Merchant girl with magic amplification powers, and while she's currently hanging out in a gilded cage at her cousin's house, she's intending to break out -- and she's sort of a magic/experience junkie who would fucking love Morden. She's been nosing around the more interesting sides of London recently, clearly their paths should cross.

I also have Jegudiel ([info]laudingly) who is an angel, of course, and while she's generally benevolent, she's not terribly understanding of those with malicious intent and would give Morden some very Stern glances if he comes too close to anyone she considers Important. Berith ([info]fetters) is a demon who has some ties to the various vampires and other demons, but has spent the past ten years stuck in the basement of a newspaper press inside a summons circle with only a journal to keep him company. He should obviously know Morden, and though he'll sidestep any questions about what he's up to these days, he'll also bother him like crazy because he's hungry for conversation. And last but not least, Gideon Foster ([info]ironcompass) is the head Market Monitor Librarian with metal-bending powers and the ideal dry, humorless Librarian disposition, so good luck getting him excited, Morden. :)

Unlike me. I'M excited.

Deepest, darkest of apologies for having delayed so long in responding to this, Morden sort of enchanted me in terms of application and then I said nothing for ever and ever, amen.

Hi Rory, Lis here - one of the mod duo and Joss here is sort of absurdly easy to plot with Morden for. Also a Circus ride-along, she's the token pet of It and Estelle both, primed to be the next vessel for its demonic centre as she's both Natural and already half-way to insane (and thus largely wouldn't mind). Her and Morden's abilities line up neatly; Joss originally had the ability to wander dreams, but her father messing about with a ritual designed to bring almighty cosmic power sort of cracked her open and let magic fill her up and now she can basically reality-warp, bring pieces of dreams, day-dreams and maleficent thoughts to life in an 'oh God, why' kind of way. Witness, [info]corinthian was the byproduct of dream-walking and Alex Corinths brought to life. I think Joss would vastly prefer an ability based in enjoyment and pleasure; half the time she's convinced the world works differently to the way it does and then ...makes it happen, further convincing herself. She sort of trails in the Circus's wake, is very attached to Belville as a non-uncle, avuncular figure and it is entirely up to you how she and Morden stand, but I think she's the kind to sit in the back row and watch his performances over and over.

Otherwise! I've a fairly cantankerous ex-Librarian who runs the only sanctuary for half-dead magicians hiding from magic at [info]immoveable -- Leo Gryffiths sort of wants to rain on everyone's parade and was a Monitor back in the day, so he might have encountered Morden? I have [info]induisant Vivi Leon, whore locked into a magical contract with the local brothel, by virtue of using her pheremone manipulation on the wrong man back when she was wee -- now she's just a grown-woman diva, with an interest in breaking out and being her ~own woman. I've also got a Mundane reporter who owns the newspaper that reports on magical London (and has a demon in the basement but we don't talk about that) at [info]byliner -- Saul Cain, filthy as a pub floor would probably love Morden's show, if he could get in to see it.

I've a number of others, but those are most likely for plot, and huzzah and welcome, once again!

Rory, I am going to give you a proper plot rundown and an extensive list of ideas for non-Belville interactions, but ... after the plot o' doom ends. In the meantime: ALL THE BELVILLE/MORDEN TIEMS
